Josh Smith Hosts Thanksgiving Event at My Sister's House
Josh Smith hosted a special Thanksgiving event on November 18 for approximately
200 women and children from My Sister's House at Atlantic Union Mission. The
Atlanta native was joined by Maurice Evans and assistant coach Tyrone Hill to
help serve dinner and sign autographs for all of those in attendance. Atlanta Union
Mission provides shelter, employment support and recovery programs for more than
950 homeless men, women and children and was the first of its kind for women in
1969.
Hawks Serve Holiday Meal to Eden Village
Atlanta Hawks players and coaches, along with Hawks President Bob Williams, helped to open the Hawk's "Season of Giving" with a Thanksgiving event at City of Refuge's Eden Village on November 18. The Hawk's served dinner, took pictures and signed autographs to all who attended before the event was concluded. Eden Village takes a holistic approach towards helping homeless women and children regain control of their lives and attain permanent housing for themselves. Hawks Assist in Remodeling Effort at Quest 35, Inc. Atlanta Hawks players and coaches, along with front office staff, including Bob Williams, President, Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena, and EVP, Atlanta Spirit LLC, joined volunteers from the United Way in assisting with a remodeling project at Quest 35, Inc. on October 14 as part of the NBA Cares initiative. Quest 35, Inc., a United Way community partner, provides affordable-supportive housing to homeless and low-income populations through case management, educational and vocational training, community resources and financial management services. The Hawks provided supplies, and players and coaches pitched-in to help upgrade several emergency transitional housing units for homeless men and women. Hawks and Thrashers Help Unveil Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
The Atlanta Hawks Foundation and the Atlanta Thrashers Foundation participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, August 23, in celebration of the grand opening of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding and the unveiling of its cafeteria. Atlanta Thrashers President and Atlanta Spirit, LLC Executive Vice President Don Waddell and Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena President, and Atlanta Spirit, LLC Executive Vice President Bob Williams, participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, along with Ron Frieson, Senior Vice President, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, External Affairs and Julia Jones, Vice President of Operations for Children's at Hughes Spalding. The Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers Foundations donated a total of $100,000 to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding. Al Horford Treats Student to Afternoon at Dave & Busters
Hawks All-Star center Al Horford treated Samaria Driver from Lake Forest Elementary School (in Sandy Springs) to an afternoon of food and games at Dave & Buster’s in Marietta. Driver was selected as the Grand Prize Winner of the “Hometown Hangout” Essay Contest, which asked students to write about where they would like to spend some time with the Hawks big man. The contest was held as part of the Read to Achieve program presented by Philips. Joe Smith Teaches Students How to Train Their Dragons
Hawks big man Joe Smith enjoys reading books that have been readapted into movies. On March 18 he got his chance, reading an excerpt of Cressida Cowell’s “How to Train Your Dragon” (in theaters now) to 20 Parkside Elementary School honor students as a part of the NBA’s Read to Achieve program. The unfortunate death of McEachern High School student-athlete Rajaan Bennett rocked many in the state, and last summer Josh Smith had the opportunity to meet the young man while working out at his high school. After hearing the news of his passing, Smith wanted to do whatever he could to assist the Bennett family moving forward. >Full Press Release
The Atlanta Hawks held the annual College Media Day for college students on March 28 during the Hawks � Pacers game at Philips Arena. Following the afternoon�s activities, students were given the opportunity to submit a game story or recap of the events for publication on Hawks.com. For the fourth year, the Atlanta Hawks Foundation partnered with Project GRAD Atlanta on a scholarship program for high school seniors. To date, the foundation has awarded $80,000 to deserving students with $20,000 being awarded this year. Joe Johnson recently recognized the newest class of Hawks Scholars, along with Project GRAD Executive Director Yolanda Watson-Spiva (1st row, 2nd left), during halftime of the March 5th Hawks game. Class of 2010 Hawks Scholars from Project GRAD high schools are: Hawks Celebrate Black History Month; Honor African-American Leaders As part of this year�s celebration of Black History Month, the Atlanta Hawks are honoring prominent African-American leaders during home games in February for their civic contributions, accomplishments and leadership. Beginning with the Hawks � Clippers game on Wednesday, February 3, the team will recognize individuals from the Atlanta area who have excelled in these areas during special in-game ceremonies. Full Story Video: The Honorees - Atlanta Hawks Poetry Slam The Atlanta Hawks teamed-up with United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday with a special writing contest for Atlanta area high school students. The theme of the �Atlanta Hawks Poetry Slam� is based on United Way�s brand �LIVE UNITED,� and encouraged students to write about how they can work together to create a better world. The top 15 finalists attended a poetry workshop conducted by a local poet and later competed in the finals held at the Hard Rock Cafe Atlanta. Grand prize winner Amber Holmes of Lovejoy High School performed her piece to the Philips Arena crowd at halftime of the Hawks� annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday game. She also received a laptop computer, an autographed Hawks jersey and four tickets to the game. Runner-up Shamarria Brooks of Pebblebrook High School received a 32� flat screen television, four tickets to the game and an autographed basketball while third place finisher Joshua Howard of Perry Lerry Center received a GPS system, four tickets to the game and an autographed mini-ball and photo. "Full Court Fest," the Atlanta Hawks Foundation's annual fundraiser took place on January 23 at Ventanas. Guests had the opportunity to rub elbows with the entire roster of Hawks players and coaches, as well as team legends and executives, while playing a variety of casino games, and other interactive elements.The evening also included an elegant dinner, music, raffles, and a silent auction for a number of unique items. Mario West hit up the Egelston Campus of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta on January 19th for a pizza party with the patients. Mario has been giving back to the children at the hospital since his days with Georgia Tech and has continued to do so with the Atlanta Hawks. Each child received a book to keep and other goodies!
On January 19th, Marvin Williams visited the Suwanee Sports Academy. He took time to speak with a large number of athletes and their parents about his career in college and the NBA, along with sharing fun tidbits about growing up in Seattle. After answering questions from the crowd, Williams joined everyone for a group photo. Al Horford Hosts "Al's Amigos" Holiday Party
On December 15th, Hawks center Al Horford traveled to Brunswick Zone in Marietta to host "Al's Amigos" Holiday Party. The event helped spread holiday cheer to children from O'Gilvie-Carrington Centers, Inc. which is a group home for boys. Horford joined the kids for dinner and bowling before passing out gifts which included a pair of NIKE shoes. Jamal Crawford Gives Back at "Giving Tree" Event
Atlanta Hawks Guard Jamal Crawford, in conjunction with his Jamal Crawford Foundation, hosted the annual "Giving Tree" on December 17th at Buckhead's Lenox Square Mall. The event benefitted Positive Growth and Atlanta Housing Authority. With the purchase of a holiday gift from the giving tree, fans received an autographed photo of Crawford as well as tickets to a Hawks game. On December 17th, Hawks center Zaza Pachulia took children on a holiday shopping "Z-Spree" to Toys "R" Us in Buckhead. The children who participated in the event were from Mothers Raising Sons, Inc. which is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive counseling, mentoring, seminars and educational services for at-risk single parent families. Mo Evans Visits Toys for Tots The Hawks have teamed up with Kia Motors, Applebee's and the United States Marine Corps to assist underprivileged children in the Atlanta area this holiday season. At Hawks home games through Dec. 18 and at any participating Greater Metro Atlanta Kia Retailer or Greater Atlanta Area Applebee's Restaurants through Dec. 20, the team is collecting new, unwrapped toys which will benefit the "Toys for Tots" program. Fans donating a toy will be able to receive a voucher good for two complimentary tickets to a select upcoming Hawks or Thrashers game (maximum one voucher per person). On December 7, Hawks guard Joe Johnson hosted the fifth "JJ's Santa-Lanta for Kids" holiday event for approximately 100 teenagers from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta. The festivities took place at Andretti Indoor Karting and Games where Johnson treated the kids to dinner, games and holiday gifts. Johnson hosted the event as he continued his longstanding support of the William E. Thrasher Boys & Girls Club from Little Rock Arkansas, of which he is a former member. The day before Thanksgiving, Atlanta Hawks forward Josh Smith hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for the women and children of My Sister's House, a local emergency shelter and residential recovery facility. Joined by Harry the Hawk, Smith helped serve Thanksgiving dinner to a crowd of over 200 women and children. To burn off the delicious meal, the crowd broke out into an impromptu electric slide just before the evening ended. Those in attendance were impressed by Smith's compassion and he in turn was happy to see so many smiling faces. HAWKSGIVING The entire Atlanta Hawks family tipped-off the holiday season with a special Thanksgiving event at The Gateway Center on November 24, 2009. Players and coaches spent the afternoon serving Thanksgiving dinners with all the trimmings to residents of the facility, located in downtown Atlanta. As part of the Hawks Read to Achieve Program, presented by Philips, the Atlanta Hawks are happy to announce our "Hometown Hangout" Essay Contest. This contest is open to all metro Atlanta elementary schools (grade Kindergarten-5). Please read the official rules for the contest, which kicks off on October 26, 2009, and has great prize packages for the six winning students. The grand prize winner will get to take Al to his or her "hometown hangout" her in Atlanta and 4 tickets to the Read to Achieve Day Game on March 28, 2010; and 5 second place winners (awarded in each grade level except in the grade level which has the Grand Prize Winner) will be awarded 4 tickets to the Read to Achieve Game on March 28, 2010. 2009 Paint the Town
