ATLANTA, GA (Nov. 1, 2004) - The Atlanta Hawks Foundation dedicated a new
community basketball court at the Lynwood Recreation Center with a special
ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 30. The event also included free kids
basketball and dance clinics and other festivities. Rookie forward Josh Smith,
assistant coach Bob Bender and Antje Wortman participated in the ceremonies.
In memory of Hawks scout Gary Wortman, who passed away in 2000, the Atlanta
Hawks Court Renovation Program builds and renovates basketball courts in
underprivileged neighborhoods throughout the Atlanta-area each year. At each new
court, the Hawks and The Home Depot put down new pavement, install new
backboards, rims, nets and fencing, as well as make any other needed repairs.
The court at the Lynwood Recreation Center is the fifth newly-built or renovated
court donated by the team since the program’s inception. In a ceremony last
week, the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Commissioners of DeKalb County
proclaimed October 30, 2004 as “Atlanta Hawks Day” in recognition of the pledge
by the Hawks Foundation.
