Draft Workout Quotes: May 30, 2003
Tony Barone
On the 2003 Draft
"You should not just assume that we just have the 13th pick. We might have trades, all kinds of things could happen. We don't want to not bring a guy in because he might be 15 and we have 13. We want to look at all the guys we can look at."
On working out European players
"We will have the Europeans come in after Chicago. Their country teams will be done playing by then and then they will come over."
On today's workout
"We felt like Toris (Bright) has played excellent defense. He has asthma and today it bothered him. We wanted to look at the big guys (Rick Rickert and Britton Johnsen). Tick is a young, raw-boned talent who is extremely skilled. We have seen Reece (Gaines) a couple of times. We wanted to look at a big guard. He may be a prime candidate for the 13th pick."
On Reece Gaines
"Reece is a combo guard, that is hard to find. He can play the one and two (position). He played for a great coach (Rick Pitino) and has played in all kinds of pressure situations so that is a plus."
Reece Gaines
On today's workout
"It felt good. This is the fourth one I have had in four days so I am a little tired."
On possibility of playing in Memphis
"I love Memphis. It would be great if they gave me the chance to play in the NBA. I am willing to work hard and play anywhere."
Rick Rickert
On today's workout
"It was intense, a hard workout. They gave us a good run."
On the transition to the NBA
"The Big 10 is a very physical conference but can't be compared to the NBA. It is going to be a jump. The NBA is a tough and physical game that you have to prepare your body for."
On the possibility of playing in Memphis
"I don't care where I go. I just want the chance to play in the NBA. I don't think that guys should choose and say 'I want to go here' or 'I don't want to go there'. I think just the chance to play in the NBA is reaching the ultimate level."
