Grizzlies re-assign Russ Smith to NBA D-League’s Iowa Energy

The Memphis Grizzlies re-assigned guard Russ Smith to the Grizzlies’ NBA Development League affiliate, the Iowa Energy, Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace announced today. This marks the sixth D-League assignment for Smith this season, including three with Iowa and three with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

Smith (6-0, 165) has averaged 19.5 points on .510 shooting with 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 32.3 minutes in 15 games (nine starts) for Iowa this season and has registered 18.1 points on .520 shooting with 4.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 30.0 minutes in 22 games (nine starts) for the Energy and Mad Ants this season. The 23-year-old posted 21.5 points on .523 shooting with 5.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 3.33 steals in 36.5 minutes in six games in his latest assignment to Iowa (Feb. 22-March 10).

The New York City native has averaged 1.4 points and 0.4 assists in 5.0 minutes in 10 games (zero starts) as a rookie with Memphis and the New Orleans Pelicans. Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round (47th overall) of the 2014 NBA Draft after four seasons at Louisville (2010-14), Smith was acquired by New Orleans in a draft night trade and traded to Memphis on Jan. 12.
