Grizzlies Host Camp for Rookies and Prospectives and Prepare for the Pro-Am League

Summertime may be considered as an “off-season” for the NBA, but the Memphis Grizzlies will be hard at work preparing for the upcoming season at a camp with rookies and free agents in Memphis and then Summer Pro-Am leagues in California and Utah.

The Grizzlies will host a summer camp for rookies, veterans and free agents to be held daily starting Sunday morning, June 30 and continues through Friday, July 5 at the Grizzlies’ training facility at Rhodes College. Workout sessions will be held twice daily from 10 a.m. until about noon and 5 p.m. until about 7 p.m. Grizzlies veterans Eddie Gill and Will Solomon as well as 2002 NBA Draft picks Drew Gooden and Robert Archibald are included among 20 players currently scheduled to participate during the summer camp. Gooden and Archibald are tentatively scheduled to begin sessions on Wednesday, July 3.

The camp features NBA free agents, collegiate players who were not selected in the Draft and players who played in the NBDL (NBA Development League), CBA (Continental Basketball Association), ABA (American Basketball Association), USBL (United States Basketball League), and overseas last season. At the conclusion of camp, some participants will be selected to represent the Grizzlies at the Long Beach Summer Pro-Am League and Rocky Mountain Revue Summer League in July.

“We are excited that Drew and Robert plan to participate. Plus, we really have a heavy load of veteran players with NBDL, CBA, ABA, and USBL experience for our summer camp,” said Grizzlies Director of Player Personnel Tony Barone. “We have gathered some talented players who want an opportunity to showcase their skills, and we will take a close look and see if another player or two steps forward who can help us this upcoming season.” For camp roster click here.

The Grizzlies will play in the Summer Pro-Am League at California State University-Long Beach, July 7-16 with the first of two games against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, July 7. The seven-game league schedule continues with games against the Phoenix Suns, July 8; Houston Rockets, July 10; Dallas Mavericks, July 12; Suns, July 14; Los Angeles Clippers, July 15; and Lakers, July 16. The Grizzlies continue Summer Pro-Am play at the Rocky Mountain Revue (RMR) in Salt Lake City, Utah with six games during July 20-27 at Salt Lake Community College. The schedule includes games against the Suns, July 20; Portland Trail Blazers, July 21; Cleveland Cavaliers, July 23; Utah Jazz, July 24; Chicago Bulls, July 25; and Denver Nuggets, July 27.

Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West said “Summer camp and pro leagues are an invaluable opportunity for young and up-and-coming players in Europe or the NBDL to show their skills to NBA teams in a highly competitive atmosphere. The summer league is also extremely important because the league provides the first look at our draft picks as they learn our team’s systems and begin the adjustment to NBA-caliber competition.”
