Grizzlies sweep Nuggets with win in Denver, 105-98

The Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Denver Nuggets, 105-98, Sunday at Pepsi Center. The Grizzlies swept the regular season series 3-0 and are now 12-6 on the road against Western Conference opponents.

It was extremely tight for the majority of a game that featured nine ties and 14 lead changes. Neither team led by more than six until Memphis scored 37 fourth quarter points, falling one point shy of a season-high for fourth quarter points and tying their third highest scoring total for any quarter. After Denver tied the game at 75-75 with 9:16 remaining, Memphis went on a 7-0 run over the next 2:38 to give itself the lead for good.

Entering the game, the Nuggets were averaging 110.8 points per game, good for fourth in the NBA, but the Grizzlies held them nearly 13 points below that mark.

Mike Conley (31 points, 5-9 3P) knocked down his first four three-point attempts on the way to his sixth 30-point game this season. In his previous nine NBA seasons, he had five of these games combined. Zach Randolph (20 points, 11 rebounds) recorded his 15th double-double off the bench this season, which is an NBA-best. It also marks Randolph’s third game of at least 20 points and 10 rebounds this season.

Marc Gasol (20 points, 3-6 3P) recorded his 23rd game with 20-or-more points and his 12th game with at least three three-point field goals. It marks the third time this season that Conley, Gasol and Randolph have each scored 20 points and the Grizzlies have won all three of those contests (Oct. 30 vs. Washington, Jan. 6 at Golden State).

Danilo Gallinari led the Nuggets with 24 points. Gary Harris chipped in 19 points and Nikola Jokic (10 points, 11 rebounds) recorded his 24th double-double of the season.

Team Quotes

On controlling the pace and relying on their defense Yeah, I just thought we brought a whole different mindset to the game than we did the other night. The other night we really played the game like it was a rec league game; we literally didn't cross half court on like six possessions to get back and that’s just not acceptable. We addressed it and we played with the proper respect for the game and our opponent and I thought we really competed on both ends.
-- Coach Fizdale
On what the turning point was in the fourth quarter I felt like Mike’s aggression really changed the game late. He wasn't looking to get off the ball and defer. They switched on to him one time, he kept it and he made that big three and I thought that was the play that kind of broke it open for us.
-- Coach Fizdale
On the pace of the game Once we can get the other team’s half-court and we can get our half-court defense and communicating and we all hustle back and get at the level of the ball and get in front, our defense is much much better. If we are chasing our tail and all spread out in four on five or three on five, then it gets really hard to stop a team who runs three or four guys back.
-- Marc Gasol
On the play of him Zach Randolph and Mike Conley When you have the responsibility of having the ball, you have to make a decision to either pass it or shoot it, but you have to make the right decision. There comes a responsibility with that and there’s guys that have more experience and more knowledge and also more seniority, so to have that ball there is a reason why but the other guys still have to do their job in finding their spots and if they’re open, be ready to shoot it.
-- Marc Gasol
On playing better on the road I didn’t know that was a thing but I think we needed it tonight. It was just a game where we had to find rhythm since we lost two in a row, we needed to find a way to win. I tried to do what I could to be aggressive early and got some good looks early and got into a good rhythm. I carried it into the third and fourth quarter.
-- Mike Conley
On team’s defensive performance tonight I think once we eliminated the easy buckets in transition and kept it a half-court game it played into our advantage a little bit better because they are an athletic team. They like to get out and run and that’s their advantage, we did a good job slowing them down.
-- Mike Conley
