Grizzlies Acquire Wesley Person of Cleveland Cavaliers in Trade

Memphis, Tennessee, June 26, 2002 – Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced that the Grizzlies have traded guard/forward Nick Anderson and 2002 NBA Draft rights to Matt Barnes, the 46th overall selection, to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for guard/forward Wesley Person. The Grizzlies already owned the 4th overall and 32nd overall pick.

“We need to address outside shooting, and we have acquired a player who is coming off his most productive season in the NBA,” said West. “Wesley will be able to provide the scoring necessary to keep our opponents honest and away from focusing on our post-up players by spreading the floor with a high quality offensive threat outside. We wish Nick well. Hopefully, Nick will be able to find more playing time in Cleveland to continue his successful career.”

Anderson, a 13-year veteran, averaged 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in 15 games played for the Grizzlies last season. He had a season-high 17 points at Phoenix on November 6, 2001 and season highs with 29 minutes, six rebounds and four assists vs. Portland on Nov. 15. The Grizzlies acquired Anderson and guard Jason Williams via trade with the Sacramento Kings for guards Mike Bibby and Brent Price on June 27.

Person, averaged a career-high 15.1 points per game last season with 3.8 rebounds per game. He shot career highs of .444 (143-322) three-point FG% (ninth in NBA) and a career-high .495 (467-944) FG% (17th in NBA). He scored 20-plus points in 18 games last season with a career-high tying 33 ponts on 11-16 FG (5-9 on threes) and 6-6 FTs in 43 minutes. Person was the runner-up to Peja Stojakovic of the Kings in the 1 800 CALL ATT Shootout at All-Star Weekend in Philadelphia on Feb. 9.
