Grizzlies acquire Chris Owens for 2nd round pick in 2003

Memphis, Tennessee, June 26, 2002 – Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced that the Grizzlies have traded the second round selection in the 2003 NBA Draft to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for the Draft rights to Chris Owens of Texas, selected 48th overall. The Grizzlies already selected the 4th overall pick, Drew Gooden of Kansas, and 32nd overall pick, Robert Archibald of Illinois.

“Before his knee injury during his senior year, Chris was a very exciting player,” said West. “We are hopeful that his rehabilitation will go well, and Chris will have an opportunity to play to his full potential.”

Owens saw his senior season cut short in his 11th game when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during a game against Utah on December 29, 2001. He underwent surgery on January 29. As a senior, Owens was leading Texas with 15.8 points per game with 7.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game. He compiled team highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds in overtime win over Stanford on Dec. 1. As a junior, he was named Second Team All-Big 12 and Big 12 All-Defensive Team, and Big 12 All-Tournament Team. He averaged 14.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots per game (21st in nation).
