Juan Carlos Navarro named to All-Rookie Second Team

Memphis, May 13, 2008 – Memphis Grizzlies guard Juan Carlos Navarro was named to the 2007-08 T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Second Team, the league announced today.

Playing his first NBA season after a 10-year professional career in Spain, Navarro placed in the top five among NBA rookies in scoring average (10.9, 3rd), three-point field goals made (156, 1st), three-point field goal percentage (.361, 2nd), assists (2.2, 4th) and free throw percentage (.849, 2nd). The 156 treys by “La Bomba” were the second most in NBA rookie history and just two shy of the all-time record (Kerry Kittles, 158 in 1996-97).

Originally selected in the second round (40th overall) of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards, Navarro’s rights were acquired by the Grizzlies on Aug. 17, 2007 in exchange for a future protected first round draft pick. The 6-3, 170-pound guard went on to appear in all 82 regular season games, one of only two NBA rookies this season (Houston’s Luis Scola) to make that claim.

Navarro’s selection makes him the seventh player in franchise history to earn All-Rookie honors (fourth since moving to Memphis in 2001). Memphis now has been represented on the NBA All-Rookie teams in consecutive seasons (Rudy Gay, First Team in 2006-07).

Joining the 6-3, 170-pound guard (24 points) on the Second Team are Toronto’s Jamario Moon (38), Philadelphia’s Thaddeus Young (23), Detroit’s Rodney Stuckey (22) and Houston’s Carl Landry (18).

The NBA All-Rookie First Team includes the 2007-08 Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant (57) and Jeff Green (43) of the Seattle SuperSonics, Atlanta’s Al Horford (58), the Los Angeles Clippers’ Al Thornton (48) and Scola (43).

The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select five players for the first team and five players for the second team, regardless of position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players on their own team. Two points were awarded for first team votes and one for second team votes.
