June 28, 2006, Memphis, Tennessee - Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West has announced that the team has selected guard Kyle Lowry of Villanova with the 24th pick in the first round of the 2006 NBA Draft.

Lowry, a 6-0, 175-pound guard, played two seasons at Villanova and finished his career with averages of 9.5 points on 44.9% shooting, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 57 games (36 starts).

“If you talk to his coach you will probably get an absolutely glowing report,” said West. “He’s going to bring toughness to our team and we think that this gives us something where we can play at a little bit different level than we’re playing at now. He really likes to compete. We think this will, in the long run, be something that will help us take a step forward.”

Last season as a sophomore, Lowry was a Second Team All-Big East selection and was the Wildcats’ third leading scorer, averaging 11.0 ppg. Lowry also led the club in assists (3.7 apg), steals (2.3 spg) and finished third in rebounding (4.3 rpg). He had a career-high 28 points, five steals and five assists in a win over Rutgers.

As a freshman, Lowry was named to the Big East All-Rookie team, and averaged 7.5 points after missing the first seven games of the season recovering from ACL surgery. He scored in double figures six times and had a season-high 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting in Villanova’s third round game in the NCAA Tournament against North Carolina.
