Halle Park Groundbreaking

The courts at Halle Park, also known to local basketball players as “The Precinct” or even just “Mt. Moriah,” are the premier outdoor courts in the city of Memphis. The high caliber of playground basketball played on these courts attracts players from across Memphis, and in some cases, across the country – anyone who thinks they have game in Memphis comes to The Precinct to earn their reputation in the city.

“Whenever anyone talks about playground basketball in Memphis, they talk about Halle Courts," Grizzlies Vice President of Community Investment and Executive Director of the Grizzlies Foundation Diane Terrell said. "These four courts at Mount Moriah are legendary playground basketball spots where players from all over the city and country come to play, so we're really happy to be making this commitment to basketball in the community.”

In acknowledgement of Halle’s special place in the folklore of playground basketball in the city, the Memphis Grizzlies will work alongside members of the community to completely refurbish each of the four courts, ensuring Halle’s rich culture of basketball is sustained for the next generation of players. As part of the commitment, the Grizzlies also will collaborate with schools and community groups throughout Memphis to develop a regular schedule of on-site programming and continuously extend the value of the renovated space.

Grizzlies forward/guard and former University of Memphis star D.J. Stephens helped to tip-off the Friday night groundbreaking ceremony, an investment that is part of the Grizzlies Cares initiative – a broader commitment to ensure that all young people have access to parks, programs and people dedicated to developing their full potential.

"We want to make sure that young people -- all people -- have safe places to play and have good, quality courts," Terrell said.
