Grizzlies Acquire Draft Rights to Alexander Johnson from Portland

June 28, 2006 Memphis, Tennessee — Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West has announced that the team has acquired the draft rights to Alexander Johnson from Portland (via Indiana), who was selected 45th overall by the Indiana Pacers, in exchange for a 2008 second round pick.

In three collegiate seasons at Florida State, Johnson, a 6-9, 240-pound forward, appeared in 92 games (73 starts), and averaged 9.8 points on 52.0% shooting and 5.2 rebounds. Johnson posted nine career double-doubles for the Seminoles and finishes his career ranked 14th in school history in blocked shots (66).

Last season as a junior, Johnson earned Honorable Mention All-ACC honors and was first on his team and eighth in the ACC in rebounding (7.4 rpg). He also was second on his team in scoring (13.2 ppg) and scored 20 or more points four times. He registered career-highs with 22 points and 13 rebounds in a win over then number one ranked Duke.

As a sophomore, Johnson averaged 6.8 points and 4.3 rebounds in 17.5 minutes. He led the team in scoring five times and rebounding 11 times.

In his freshman season at Florida State, Johnson averaged 9.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 20.8 minutes, scoring in double figures 13 times. He was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team.
