Grizzlies select Xavier Henry and Greivis Vasquez in the 2010 NBA Draft
Memphis, June 24th, 2010 – The Memphis Grizzlies selected Kansas guard Xavier Henry (ZAH-vee-A) with the 12th pick and Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez (Gray-vess VASS-kez) with the 28th pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced tonight. Memphis also traded the draft rights to South Florida guard Dominique Jones (25th) to the Dallas Mavericks for cash considerations.
Henry, a Big 12 All-Freshman Team and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection in 2009-10, will add perimeter shooting (.418, 69-of-165 3FG,) to a Grizzlies squad that finished 30th in the NBA in three-point made (344) and attempted (1020) and 26th in three-point field goal percentage (.337) last season. The 19-year-old marksman ranked second on the Jayhawks in scoring (13.4 points) while posting 4.4 rebounds and 1.50 steals in his lone season in Lawrence.
Ranked No. 3 by ESPNU 100 for the high school class of 2009, the 6-6, 220-pound southpaw competed for the USA Junior Select Team in the Nike Hoop Summit as a high school senior. The early-entry candidate erupted for a career-high 31 points on Dec. 12 vs. La Salle.
Henry followed in the footsteps of his parents, Carl and Barbara, who both played basketball at Kansas. Carl was an All-Big Eight First Team selection as a senior under NBA coaching legend Larry Brown. The Oklahoma City native was born in Gent, Belgium, where his father played professionally.
Vasquez, the 2009-10 ACC Player of the Year, will bring an all-around game to the Grizzlies' backcourt. The only player in the history of the storied ACC conference to record at least 2,000 points (2,171), 750 assists (772) and 600 rebounds (647) in a career, Vasquez posted 19.6 points, 6.3 assists (5th in the NCAA) and 4.6 rebounds in his senior season at Maryland.
This year's Bob Cousy Award Winner as the nation's top point guard, Vasquez topped other notable draftees such as Kentucky's John Wall (No. 1 overall) and Eric Bledsoe (No. 18) as well as Texas' Avery Bradley (No. 19).
One of the most decorated players to ever don a Maryland Terrapins uniform, Vasquez was named a First-Team All-American by The Sporting News as a senior, Second Team All-ACC both as a junior and a sophomore and was an Honorable Mention All-ACC selection as a freshman.
A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Vasquez played for the Venezuelan National team at the 2007 and 2009 FIBA Americas Tournament, averaging 12.1 points and 9.8 points, respectively.
