Grizzlies to host Midnight basketball clinics throughout summer
The Memphis Grizzlies along with Memphis Gun Down, the Memphis Police Department Community Outreach Program and Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM) will host Midnight Basketball tournaments at the MAM Grizzlies Athletic Center (2107 Ball Rd. Memphis, 38114) every Saturday (excluding Independence Day weekend) throughout the summer beginning June 21 from 7 – 11 p.m. The last tournament date is set for July 26.
As part of a larger effort to reduce crime amongst teenagers, the Midnight Basketball tournaments will serve as a positive alternative during noted high crime hours on Saturdays. Each Saturday there will be a separate double-elimination style tournament. Each game within the tournament will be up to ten minutes, with winners advancing to the next round. Participants, ages 16-20, can either come with a team of five or be paired up with other individuals to form a team. There is no cost to participate.
Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. each Saturday. For more information or to pre-register, visit http://memphisgundown.org/.
Launched by Mayor A C Wharton in February 2013, Memphis Gun Down is an evidence-based youth gun violence reduction plan with five core prongs: Suppression; Community Mobilization; Youth Opportunities; Intervention; and Organizational Change and Development. A marked reduction in youth gun violence has already been seen citywide as the program efforts are focused on select areas of South Memphis and Frayser.
