Update: Memphis Grizzlies honor fallen MPD Officer Martoyia Lang by raising $20,000 for her family
MEMPHIS, December 20, 2012– The Memphis Grizzlies honored the memory of fallen police officer Martoyia Lang on Wednesday, Dec. 19, prior to the Grizzlies match-up against the Milwaukee Bucks, by collecting $20,000 in donations for Officer Lang’s family. With the help of volunteers from the Memphis Police Department, Grizzlies fans in attendance donated $10,000 at the doors with SunTrust and the Grizzlies both donating $5,000 each.
On Friday, Dec. 14, tragedy hit the nation and the local Memphis community with the shooting deaths of 20 children and 6 adults in Newtown, CT and with the death of Memphis police officer Martoyia Lang. Officer Lang, who served over 12 years with the Memphis Police Department, was shot along with her partner while serving a warrant on Friday morning. Lang is survived by four children.
A free pair of tickets for Wednesday night’s game vs. Milwaukee Bucks, were given out to the first 1,000 Memphis Police and Fire Department officers at the FedExForum Box Office, not only to honor Officer Lang, but also to thank the service men and women who protect and serve the Memphis community on a daily basis.
