Grizzlies and Southwest TN Community College to present Second Annual Poetry Slam
Grand Finale Winner to Receive Two-Year Full Tuition Scholarship at Southwest Tennessee Community College
MEMPHIS – Young poets from 27 area high schools will combine creativity with composition as they compete in the Second Annual Memphis Grizzlies Poetry Slam, presented by Southwest Tennessee Community College. Associate presenting sponsors are Wing Stop and the National Basketball Academy.
Over the next two months, participants at each of these individual schools will vie for a spot in the Grizzlies Poetry Slam Finale that will see the winner walk away with a two-year, full tuition scholarship to Southwest Tennessee Community College, a $100 per semester book stipend and an all-expense paid trip to New York. At the Dec. 3 finale, set to take place at Southwest Tennessee Community College’s Macon Cove campus, each competitor will have two minutes to recite verses of original poetry under the theme of “Believe in Myself.”
“We are excited about partnering with the Memphis Grizzlies in this important community investment program,” said Nathan Essex, president of Southwest Tennessee Community College. “Southwest is deeply committed to fostering greater community service throughout metro Memphis and investing in initiatives to enhance the overall value of attaining higher education, especially for our young people.”
In addition to selecting the winner, the judges, including representatives from the Grizzlies, Southwest Tennessee Community College and Wing Stop will also select a runner-up who will win a laptop and a third place finisher who will receive an iPod Touch.
