After attempted five free throws in its previous game on March 13 vs. LA Lakers, Memphis attempted 51 free throws tonight, tying a franchise record that was first set on Nov. 3, 2007 against Indiana.
Key Run of the Night
Memphis scored seven of the final 10 points of the fourth quarter to force overtime… The run was highlighted by two Rudy Gay three-pointers, the second coming with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation… The team’s traded the lead six times in overtime before Toronto pulled ahead on a Jerryd Bayless lay-up with 1:52 remaining.
Player Notes
After missing the last 37 games due to a torn MCL sustained on Jan. 1 at Chicago, Zach Randolph returned tonight with a season-high 25 points and nine rebounds.
Rudy Gay's three-pointer with .5 seconds left forced overtime, but the Grizzlies dropped Friday night's contest to the Raptors 114-110 at FedExForum. Gay finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds while Marc Gasol scored 28. In his first game back from an MCL tear, Zach Randolph added 25 points with nine rebounds.

On the game:
“They gave us a lot of opportunities to win the game. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot. We miss five out of six free throws in a crucial set, but then Rudy (Gay) comes back and hits two threes and sends it into overtime. We mess around again, get three free throws to tie the game, but we can’t make three. We make one, missed the second one and then missed the third one on purpose. We had turnovers and two missed dunks. We have a lay-up. We try to dunk it and miss it. We have a fast-break, try to alley-oop it and miss it. We get a charge on a fast-break and another turnover on a fast-break. We had opportunities to win the game. That is what a poised, good team would do. They would get kicked in the face by a team that is not as good and then come out and win the game anyway. We had opportunities to win the game anyway, and we didn’t.”
On Toronto:
“You have to give it to Toronto. They hung in there. They took a blow in the fourth quarter for us to come back, tie and send it to overtime. They hung in there and showed poise, battled and got the win.”
“(DeMar) DeRozan is a good jump-shooter. Crawling and getting in the paint, he uses his athleticism to jump off and he did a good job of that early. We quieted him through the course of the game, but he came back late. Jerryd Bayless has always been a scorer. He was attacking. They were playing a lot of pick-and-rolls. We weren’t helping as well with our bigs as we needed to help our point guard.”
On Zach being back:
“We lost the game. I am happy to have Zach back. He was seven of 14 from the free-throw line. You can give him kudos for scoring, but that is what he does. We need the defense and everything else that helps us win the game.”

On the game:
“We didn’t play the way we normally play. We played sloppy. We didn’t make the little plays that win games. Free throws were the story tonight. We just couldn’t get loose balls and make the 50/50 effort. We can look back and see the opportunities. They almost gave it to us. We had our opportunities down the stretch and we just couldn’t capitalize. I take a lot of the responsibility for that and the last play, and a lot of the guys feel the same way.”
On Zach Randolph returning:
“Zach did well, he did better than I expected. We are going to be a more inside-out team. Especially the way Marc (Gasol) is playing. With Zach being back hopefully we can continue to dominate the paint and keep getting better. I thought he did great. I thought he played hard and he tried to help our team win.”
On Toronto:
“They are a great offensive team. They have a lot of scorers. They played very hard and they are well-coached. We just let them stick around too long. We are a team that has grown a lot. We’ve been thorough games like this. It’s just one game. It’s unfortunate we lost, but guys have to shake it off, have practice and get ready for Washington and try to get back on track.”
Zach Randolph
On being back:
“I felt pretty good, once I got into the groove. My timing is still a little off. I felt rusty on both ends. I just have to get better and keep improving. I felt like I was making progress. I took a huge step confidence- wise just getting back out there with the guys. I haven’t played in almost three months. I felt good out there. My wind felt good. It’s progress. I’m trying to get back to my old self; keep pushing and keep working with these guys and help them win games.”
On the game:
“I felt like we gave this game away. We turned the ball over, missed a couple shots and a couple of dunks. The blame is on us. We have to give Toronto credit. They stepped in , they played hard and won the game.”

On the game:
“We had a lot of missed opportunities tonight. Toronto played a great game. They came out and gave great effort tonight. I know we all wished we had a win, but that how the game goes. There’s going to be days like this and we have to regroup, get back on our feet and move on to the next one.”
On Zach Randolph:
“It was great to see him out there. You can see what a beast he is. I haven’t got a chance to play with him much this year. He came out and played better than expected.”
