Grizzlies Claim Mike Batiste; Archibald Placed on Injured Reserve

Memphis, Tennessee, October 28, 2002 — Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced that the team has acquired forward Mike Batiste from waivers. Batiste, 6-8, 225, was placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Clippers following their final preseason game.

Also, the Grizzlies have placed forward Robert Archibald (sprained ankle) on the injured list today. Archibald must sit out five games before being eligible to join the active roster.

“This is an opportunity for our team to pickup a talented, young player,” said West. “He is someone who can help address our three-point shooting needs. We are excited to have a player with tremendous potential to become a good player.”

A native of Inglewood, Calif., Batiste played in all eight preseason games for the Clippers this season, averaging 14.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg and 1.0 apg. He led the team in scoring twice during the preseason with 33 points against Seattle on Oct. 11 and 24 points against the Grizzlies on Oct. 13 at the Staples Center.

Batiste also averaged 13.7 points and 7.3 rebounds on the Clippers’ entry in the Southern California Summer Pro League. He spent the 2001-02 campaign tallying 12.4 points and 7.2 rebounds for Acqua Laurentan Biella in the Italian League. Batiste played three seasons at Arizona State University, averaging 16.7 ppg and 6.9 rpg during his final year at ASU in 1998-99.
