On the game
"It was just a great win. We fought and battled and we were down seven or eight points in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter we were a little bit dead but we kept getting stops and rebounds. We weren’t scoring but we kept getting stops and all of a sudden Darrell Arthur hit a shot and then he hit another shot and Zach (Randolph) makes an inside shot. We eventually get the lead and come down the stretch where we had the free throws to make and they made a big-time play. We could have fouled in that instance with 3.2 seconds left to go, we didn’t, and they made the shot. We came into overtime and played well. I went back with Darrell in the overtime. I started out with Marc (Gasol) and decided to go with Darrell because Marc had sat a long time and was stiff. It wasn’t like we were going to be able to do much inside with (Tim) Duncan on Marc so we played it and spread the court a little bit and got in the paint and Rudy Gay hit a big shot. Zach hit another big shot. The two steals we got coming down the stretch to give us the lead, you know, we played hard-nosed defense and tough defense throughout the overtime and we were just fortunate to get the win."
On Darrell Arthur
"Darrell gave us perimeter shooting at the ‘big’ spot. That really hurts the Spurs when you have a big that can shoot just like when they go small and put a forward in, you know, it spreads the court a little bit and Darrell did that. They tried to keep Mike (Conley) out of the paint with two guys and we throw it back to Darrell and he has a wide open shot and he made them. He made them two years ago or three years ago, whenever it was when we were in the playoffs against them. That hurts their defense. Anything that you have to go guard away from the basket hurts your defense a little bit, especially when you’re trying to stop penetration at the same time."
On Rudy Gay
"He made a big shot, he got in the lane and made a shot, he made a big block at the end that got overturned. Unfortunately, we got penalized because it went straight to a jump ball at center court but we were fortunate that Darrell got the tip and that was huge too. Rudy has been outstanding on the whole road trip and even tonight he’s just been very focused and playing outstanding basketball. I think what gets unnoticed and not talked about enough is Rudy’s versatility. Everybody wants Rudy to score 30 and be Kevin Durant and be LeBron James but Rudy Gay has versatility in terms of being able to defend better than either one of those guys, can rebound, can run the court. He doesn’t have to be the primary scorer and with the post really clogged up by Marc and Zach (Randolph) most of the time, Rudy has to stay on the perimeter even though he might have a favorable advantage because it’s hard to put one of those bigs somewhere else. He doesn’t complain, he goes out and plays and we appreciate his talents and we appreciate his efforts."
On Grizzlies’ courage, toughness, and heart
"This was definitely an example and I had told them when Tony Parker hit the three I said you have two ways to go, you can hold your head and feel sorry for yourself or you can suck it up and go back and win the game again. We got down, we fought back, and we did win the game. It was a good test of our mental toughness and our togetherness because we did stick together. We kept operating efficiently offensively and nobody really tried to go off on their own and we got the win."
On the game
"It was definitely a great way to spend my birthday. But most importantly, I tried to block that out before the game. I didn’t want to get distracted by that. I knew we had a big opponent today, San Antonio Spurs. They are playing out of their mind. And I just wanted to come in ahead and do whatever was asked of me. My teammates kept me focused and we were able to get the win."
On Tony Parker’s three-pointer to go into overtime
"I kind of dropped my head, but then I thought about it. It is five minutes left. Let’s go. We have at least five minutes up to play Grizzlies basketball which is what we did. We got some key stops. Rudy made big baskets. We got a few rebounds. Like I said, we were playing Grizzlies basketball in the overtime. That just goes to show you, you can never test the heart of a champion. Those guys have been in the war before. They also know that we put those guys out of the playoffs a few years ago, and that puts a bad taste in their mouth. So every time they play us, it is going to be like playoff basketball."
