Hubie Brown: Teacher of the Year 2004

The Memphis Grizzlies are achieving their greatest season in team history, and a key reason for the Cinderella story is 2004 NBA Coach of the Year candidate Hubie Brown.

Successful coaches and teachers share many traits, and like any great teacher, Brown has a lesson plan for his students to achieve success. And Brown’s young Grizzlies have responded. They learned how to win big this season.

Fellow NBA head coaches, players, beat writers/broadcasters and other media say Brown is no ordinary coach. He’s an extraordinary teacher. That’s why he could also be named 2004 Teacher of the Year!

Over the next few weeks, you're invited to participate in the Grizzlies' School of Thought. Follow Coach Brown's lesson plan and review his accomplishments so far this season. Most of all, you'll learn why Hubie Brown should be named Coach of the Year.

Lesson #1: Be On Time – whether it's a game, practice, film session or workout, he demands punctuality. Why? Brown won’t tolerate tardiness, because it disrupts the learning process for everyone. And Brown’s young Grizzlies responded. They're always on time. And as a result, they learned how to win big this season. Brown is no ordinary coach. He is no ordinary teacher.

Lesson #2: Play Hard – Memphis does not have a superstar on their roster. Every player is as important as the next. The Grizzlies use a 10-man rotation of players, and succeed when all parts are moving at full speed. 15 players, 10 players in 2 units, and 1 team playing their hearts out for a great teacher. Playing hard isn’t just a cliché for the Grizzlies. It’s how Brown teaches them to win.
