MEMPHIS, TN June 3, 2003 -- City of Memphis Mayor Willie W. Herenton and Memphis Grizzlies’ center Lorenzen Wright today at a press conference in City Hall announced that the 7th Annual City of Memphis/Lorenzen Wright Basketball Camp is scheduled for July 14-18, 2003, at the Pyramid Arena.
Wright has teamed up with the City of Memphis to sponsor this basketball camp for the past six summers. “My annual basketball camp for kids is one of the highlights of my summer,” said Wright. “When I was growing up, basketball camps played a significant role in my development, and I want to give back to the community to make sure kids to have the opportunity to learn the game.”
Herenton agreed. “Athletics are important to the growth and development of a well rounded young person,” said Herenton. “Sports played a wonderful role in my life and I am happy that our young people have this opportunity to receive sound, fundamental instruction from a professional.”
This annual camp for youth 8-18 years old is free to the first 300 kids who register by calling the Mayor’s Citizen Service Center at 576-6500. Camp hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Registration for the City of Memphis/Lorenzen Wright Basketball camp began today and continues until all 300 slots are filled.
