About TEAM UP
The Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation is committed to securing mentors for youth, and in 2007 launched the TEAM UP campaign. Beginning with the TEAM UP Volunteer Recruitment Lunch in August 2007 and highlighted by the TEAM UP Leadership Lunch for community and corporate leaders in January 2008 with the legendary Bill Russell as keynote speaker, building awareness and recruiting individuals to be volunteers are foremost goals for the Foundation.
Expanding youth mentoring in Memphis has been a top priority for Grizzlies Foundation since its inception in 2004, because extensive research has shown that youth who have adult mentors, whether a parent, teacher, coach, religious leader or other role model, have far greater likelihood of succeeding no matter their personal circumstances. Academic achievement, good decision-making skills, resistance to gang involvement and drugs, and aspirations for higher education are among the documented results.
The Grizzlies Foundation is determined to get individuals and organizations from across the Mid-South interested and engaged in mentoring young people. By hosting special events, initiating a broad-based marketing campaign, establishing a team of mentors among Grizzlies staff, and creating partnerships with businesses, nonprofit, faith-based and civic organizations, many more youth will have mentors offering them guidance and support.
Memphis Mentoring Partnership
Effective September 2008, the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation became the new “home” for the Memphis Mentoring Partnership. An affiliate of MENTOR, the National Mentoring Partnership, MMP offers training, program support and resources to raise the quality of mentoring throughout Memphis and Shelby County. Members represent businesses, faith-based organizations, nonprofits and volunteers committed to providing young people with mentors in our community.
Memphis Mentoring Partnership, which had previously been housed at Volunteer Memphis, has been a Grizzlies Foundation Partner since 2004. During that time, MMP provided training to dozens of mentoring programs and hundreds of volunteers. With the new alignment of MMP and the Grizzlies Foundation, many more resources will be available to emerging and established mentoring programs. In addition, by establishing a “hub” for youth mentoring, any individual or organization interested in mentoring will find the resources and guidance necessary to get involved in a meaningful, lasting way.
With these changes, the Grizzlies Foundation will now provide many more resources to individuals and organizations interested in mentoring or hosting mentoring programs, including training, technical assistance and recruitment support. For more information, please email us.
