The Don Poier Memorial Scholarship Program was created in 2006 in honor of the Memphis Grizzlies’ legendary broadcaster, Don Poier. Don was the “voice” of the Vancouver Grizzlies from 1995-2001 and then with the Memphis Grizzlies from 2001 until his untimely death in January 2005. Don brought a passion for the game that was second to none. He was a treasured member of the Grizzlies, beloved by family, friends, athletes and fans throughout his career. Don is remembered for his wit, charm, and warmth, but most of all, for his genuine love of family and friends and the game of basketball.
The Don Poier Memorial Scholarship is designed to assist students interested in pursuing a degree in broadcast journalism and/or sports broadcasting. To qualify, students must have participated in the Memphis City School’s Telecommunications program and meet high standards for academic achievement, leadership and community service.
The inaugural winner is Tiara Baker, a senior at Central High School who has maintained a 4.2 grade point average in addition to being President of Skills USA, voted the “Outstanding Student” by the Student Government Association, and a member of National Honor Society, the Central Dance Team, the Drama Club, and all while serving as a tutor at Peabody Elementary.
Tiara will be attending The University of Memphis in the fall 2007, pursuing dual degrees in broadcast news and psychology.
Congratulations to Tiara Baker, winner of the Don Poier Memorial Scholarship for 2006-2007.
