DAY 1
The Jr. NBA Training Camp, featuring 11-14 year old student-athletes specially selected from the Jr. NBA School Clinics and Jr. NBA Tournament, began shortly after lunch. Each player was given their Training Camp kit upon registration and then underwent physical measurements that included height, weight, flexibility, body fat, arm span and aerobic conditioning.
The Camp opened with welcome remarks from the NBA; Coach Frank Lopez, the US-based Jr. NBA Coach and the Orlando Magic Summer Camp Director; Coach Chot Reyes, the Philippine National Team Coach; and Coach Norman Black, the Jr. NBA Philippines Program Director. At this time, Coach Frank and Coach Norman announced that at the end of the 3-day Camp, six campers will be named to the Jr. NBA All-Star Team and both wished the campers the best of luck.
After a brief Training Camp Orientation by Coach Frank, the Camp officially kicked off. The participants rotated through a series of Physical Testing Stations that included a 50-meter sprint, bench presses, pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, agility tests and vertical leaps. Scores were recorded for all participants.
Coach Norman and Coach Frank then led the kids through a series of shooting and 3-on-3 drills. The day ended with the campers being divided into several groups and playing full-court 5-on-5 games.
One of the key initiatives of this camp was to involve the coaches from the participating schools to assist Coach Norman and Coach Frank in instructing the campers and running the drills. This helped give the coaches an ?ownership? in the program and will help garner even stronger support for the program in the future.
DAY 2
Coach Frank started Day 2 with a special session for the coaches of the participating Jr. NBA schools. Coach Frank presided over an open forum in which local coaches were given an opportunity to ask, discuss, and share training and motivation techniques that could be used in their respective youth programs. This program was so well received that the Head Coach of one of the professional men?s teams practically begged that Coach Frank conduct the same forum with his entire coaching staff during a break in Day 3!
Camp opened with a series of stretching and flexibility exercises. The campers were then made to do a series of ball-handling drills. Coach Frank also introduced a new passing drill that got all 49 campers involved at the same time, which delighted the participants. The campers then were taught a series of fastbreak drills and shooting drills. Coach Frank led the campers in a game of 3-Ball Knockout which provided a fun but competitive shooting exercise. Day 3 concluded with 3-on-3 Drills and 5-on-5 Scrimmages.
In the late afternoon, the Jr. NBA medical team gave a lecture on physical fitness and wellness to the parents of the participants and encouraged them to be more involved in their child?s sports activities.
Throughout the afternoon, Coach Frank also spoke one-on-one to a select group of kids that had been named to a "shortlist" of potential Jr. NBA All-Stars.
One of the best things that we have observed in this camp is the camaraderie that has built up among all the campers, even among the students from schools that are traditional rivals. They give each other high 5's, help each other up when they fall during games, and interact with one another during the Gatorade breaks. In addition, many of the parents in attendance, as well as school coaches and officials, have complimented the Coaches, the events and medical staff, and the NBA, with the way the camp has been organized and run.
