Basketball without Borders Asia will return
to China for the third consecutive year and take place in Shanghai
July 5-8, it was announced today by the National Basketball Association
, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) , and the China
Basketball Association (CBA). The NBA’s global basketball
development and community outreach program uses the sport of basketball
to influence positive social change and features dozens of current
and former NBA players and team personnel as camp coaches.

Shanghai, China July 8, 2007 - Today was the last day of the 2007 Basketball without Borders camp in Shanghai. It was an exciting day for the campers as they finished their regular team games and selected to the All-Star Dragon and Tiger teams, together with the 3-point shoot out. The day also had a very serious tone to it as the camp focused on HIV/AIDS awareness and education.

In the summer of 2001 Vlade Divac along with Kim Bohuny, Vice President of NBA Basketball Operations International, and 6 other fellow NBA stars opened the first BWB program. More than 5 years later, Vlade continues to contribute by participating in this years BWB Asia. This is a testament to Divac¡¦s character and willingness to help those who need it.
Vlade Divac was born in Serbia in 1968, and drafted by the Lakers in 1989. During his 18 year career he scored over 13,000 points, grabbed over 9,000 rebounds, had over 3,000 assists and blocked over 1,500 shots. Hakeem Olajuwon and Kareem Abdul-Jabarr were the only other two players to match these statistics.

Gary Colson and Vlade gives Japanese camper a pep talk
Shanghai, China July 7, 2007 – The second morning of BWB Asia began with a lot of positive yelling and hollering from Jim Lynam, Adonal Foyle and Sasha Vujacic, plenty of interaction and energy that pushed campers to focus on what making priorities mean, giving back to their communities and most importantly, teamwork at the core of basketball.
These three teachers could not stress enough on the importance of education as the primary focus in a young players’ life. When speaking about priorities Vujacic said definitively, “School, family and then basketball.” This idea was reiterated by Foyle while he tried to get the campers to think about their possible futures, he said “If you could be in the NBA? But for only 4 years; what would you do after that?”

Yao providing instruction to youngsters
Shanghai, China July 6, 2007 – Today marked the beginning of the Basketball without Borders Asia camp, held in China for the third year and in Shanghai for the second consecutive year, bringing 50 top young participants from 17 different countries and territories across Asia.
They will spend 3 days with NBA players and coaches, including three-time Basketball without Borders Asia camp director Dean Cooper from the Houston Rocket, Denver Nuggets Coach Wayne Chapman, Gary Colson from the Memphis Grizzlies, Clay Moser with 24 years of professional basketball experience, Jim Lynam participating in his third Basketball without Borders camp, and Keith D’Amelio who will be starting as a trainer of the Toronto Raptors this coming season. Together acting as coaches were NBA players Matt Carroll from Charlotte Bobcats, Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warrios Adonal Foyle both participating in their second BWB camp, LA Lakers Guard Sasha Vujacic from Slovenia, Rockets guard Luther Head, NBA legends Vlade Divac and Scottie Pippen, and Shanghai’s own son Houston Rockets All-Star center Yao Ming. more........ | Photo Gallery

Legend Glen Rice Attends Groundbreaking Ceremony For Basketball
Without Borders Asia Legacy Project In Shanghai
NBA Legend Glen Rice, MVP of the 1997 NBA All-Star Game and a
member of the 2000 NBA World Champion LA Lakers, participated in
the groundbreaking ceremony of the Basketball without Borders Asia
Legacy Project at the Yangpu Xinxing Migrant School.
Glen Rice arrived in the afternoon and was welcomed by students.
He was then given a tour of the school and visited students in their
classrooms. He encouraged the children to have dreams and aspirations,
and to strive to overcome any difficulties they may face.
The BWB Asia Legacy Project, part of this summer's BWB Asia Camp,
demonstrates the NBA's ongoing commitment to community outreach.
At the school, the NBA will be creating an NBA Cares Learn and Play
Space in partnership with the Shanghai Charity Foundation (SCF)
featuring a new technology center, library, activity room and basketball
court as well as renovating the gate and wall around the school.
