Raptors-Trail Blazers Preview

The Toronto Raptors have been scoring at a pace impressive even by their own standards.

That offensive output will face a stiff challenge Tuesday night against the defensive-minded Portland Trail Blazers in a battle of two of the NBA's hottest teams.

Toronto (24-7) has won eight of its last nine contests, seven by double-digits. The Raptors ranked second in the league with 107.3 points per game through Dec. 17, but have reached another level of production in their last five, averaging 114.8 points.

Kyle Lowry has led Toronto's balanced offense, which has committed only 11.6 turnovers per game - the second-fewest in the league - and hasn't given it away more than 10 times in the past five. Lowry is averaging career highs in field-goal percentage (45.5 percent), assists (7.7) and scoring (20.5 ppg), including a 30-point, 11-assist effort in Sunday's 116-102 victory over Denver.

The Raptors' bench also has been outstanding, scoring 40.1 points per game to rank among the league's top five. Reserve Lou Williams led the way on Sunday with 31 points.

"When Lou gets it going you want to find him," Lowry said after Toronto improved to 7-0 when Williams scores 20 points. "Our team's like that. We're unselfish. We want everyone to be successful."

Including DeMar DeRozan, who has been sidelined since Nov. 28, nine players average at least 7.7 points.

"That's one of the major things that this team has; we're a very poised group," Lowry told the Raptors' official website. "Guys just go out and compete and even when things slip a little bit, we tend to get it back."

After winning largely because of its offense last season, Portland (25-7) has been excellent at both ends in the season's first two months. The Blazers are averaging 104.0 points to rank sixth in the league, but they're holding opponents to 96.5 per game - a 6.3-point improvement over 2013-14.

Lately, they've had to do it without LaMarcus Aldridge, who's missed three of the past four with an upper respiratory illness. Wesley Matthews has stepped up, scoring 25 in a 114-93 win over Philadelphia on Friday to kick off Portland's seven-game homestand before leading the way with 28 on Sunday in a 101-79 rout of the New York Knicks.

"It's great, I think, having to depend on guys coming off the bench who haven't had much of an opportunity," Damian Lillard said. "It gives our team confidence, more guys we can depend on even when we have full strength."

Aldridge is questionable for this one, and the Raptors would certainly like if he took another night off. He's averaged 27.7 points and 13.5 rebounds in his last six against Toronto, and Portland has won 10 of the last 11 in the series.

Even if Aldridge can't go, the Blazers' long-distance shooting has been helping make up for his absence. Portland has taken an average of 36.7 3-pointers over the past three games, and made 46.4 percent of them - including 6 of 9 in the first quarter against the Knicks.

"It's contagious. It was just a good vibe from the jump," said Matthews, who's 18 of 37 from long distance in that stretch. "I think I missed the first one, but then (Nicolas Batum) hit one, Damian hit one and I think the floodgates really opened."

The Blazers are 9-1 when Matthews scores at least 19 points and 11-1 when they hit more than 10 3s.

Blazers down the Raptors 102-97 in OT

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) While LaMarcus Aldridge may not have been at his best physically, he did have the advantage of being well-rested when the Trail Blazers took the Raptors to overtime.

Portland's All-Star forward, who had missed three of the last four games because of a respiratory illness, had 23 points and 13 rebounds in the 102-97 victory over Toronto on Tuesday night.

"I was kind of feeling it out in the first half because they hadn't played with me in two or three games," Aldridge said about his teammates. "In the second half I was trying to be more aggressive going to the basket, just trying to find my shot."

The Blazers, the first team in the NBA to 26 wins, have won four straight and nine of their last 10.

Aldridge kidded that he still had energy at the end because he'd been able to sit out of a few games, but coach Terry Stotts admired Aldridge's will after he was pressed into additional minutes because of the close game.

"Coming back from an illness that sapped him of a lot of energy, he showed a lot of moxie," Stotts said.

Damian Lillard added 26 points and nine assists, while Wesley Matthews finished with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.

The Blazers rallied in the fourth quarter after trailing by 13 points, but Amir Johnson's short jumper for the Raptors tied the game 87-87 and sent it to overtime.

Portland took a 96-90 lead in the extra period on consecutive 3-pointers from Lillard, Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum. Kyle Lowry's layup got the Raptors within 96-94, but Greivis Vasquez was called for a clear-path foul on Batum, who made one of a pair of free throws to keep Portland in front 97-94.

Lillard made a pair of free throws with 19.4 second left and the Raptors couldn't catch up.

"We just had to stay the course, we knew they were one of the better teams in the league this season, top of the Eastern Conference and they've played well against Western Conference teams," Lillard said. "We knew it was going to be a fight coming in."

Lowry finished with 25 points while James Johnson had 14 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season for Toronto.

The Raptors had won the first two games of their six-game road trip, including a 116-102 victory at Denver on Sunday.

Portland was coming off a 101-79 rout of the New York Knicks on Sunday.

"They're one of the best teams in the NBA," Lowry said of the Blazers. "They've got two All-Stars over there. They're a complete team."

Known for their 3-point shooting, the Blazers were uncharacteristically 2 for 17 from beyond the arc in the first half. Portland had 16 or more 3-pointers in each of the past three games.

After taking a 45-38 lead into the break, the Raptors extended their lead to 56-45 on James Johnson's tip shot in the third quarter.

The Blazers showed some spark at the end of the third quarter when Lillard nailed a 3-pointer to narrow Toronto's lead to 70-63.

The Blazers chipped away and Lillard's layup narrowed it to 83-82 with 4:23 left. Aldridge tied it making one of two free throws but Terrence Ross answered with a reverse dunk for the Raptors.

Portland took its first lead since the game's opening minutes on Aldridge's jumper with 1:36 to go.

Lowry missed an open jumper from the baseline, then his layup with 10 second left was blocked by Joel Freeland. But Amir Johnson's jumper with 4.7 seconds left tied it.

Lillard missed a layup as time ran out in regulation.

"I love the way we competed in a hostile environment," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "If you can compete in that environment, the way we did tonight, you can compete in a lot of places."
