Heat-Nets Preview

NEW YORK (AP) They have hung high above the Barclays Center plaza this season, oversized pictures of the faces of the Brooklyn Nets' biggest stars.

On the court, those players are looking pretty small.

Deron Williams couldn't score in the last game. Kevin Garnett has barely scored at all. And the Miami Heat keep proving that when it comes to constructing a super team, still nobody has done it better.

Up 2-0 even without needing huge efforts from LeBron James, the Heat try to push the Nets to the brink of elimination when the series shifts to Brooklyn on Saturday night.

"We did what we were supposed to do, protecting home court," Miami's Dwyane Wade. "Now it gets interesting. Now we're trying to get one in their building. This is when the playoffs get fun."

Miami tied a franchise record with its eighth straight playoff victory by pulling away to win 94-82 in Game 2 on Thursday night. The Nets felt better about their effort after getting blown out in the opener, but there was still plenty of cause for alarm.

Williams, the former All-Star who teammates insist is their most important player, shot 0 for 9 in the worst playoff game of his career. Garnett, who is 10 days shy of his 38th birthday, missed a couple of point-blank attempts while going 2 for 8, but that was an improvement from his scoreless Game 1.

But as they head home, the Nets still believe they can again become the team that beat the Heat all four times during the regular season.

"We have a lot of confidence in ourselves," Garnett said. "We just have to go home and defend our home court."

James, averaging just 22 points, has won at least one road game in every playoff series since he and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami in 2010. A victory in Brooklyn would make it 14 straight series, giving the Heat the longest streak in NBA history.

Brooklyn tried to build a threat to the two-time defending champions last summer by bringing in Garnett and Paul Pierce to join All-Star center Brook Lopez and the Williams-Joe Johnson backcourt that was already in place.

They believed their aging roster had a two-year window, but the first could be slammed shut by Monday. Lopez was long ago lost to a broken foot, and while the Nets flourished with a smaller lineup, they're now facing a team that has won two straight titles playing small-ball.

So the Nets need everyone to play well, but so far that looks unlikely. Garnett had 12 rebounds and defended well in Game 2, but should've had at least two more baskets. Williams, who has battled ankle problems and been in decline since signing a $98.5 million contract in 2012, passed and rebounded fine, but has to give the Nets points, too.

"We look for him to bounce back in Game 3," Nets coach Jason Kidd said.

Even with Williams' woes, the Nets were within two points midway through the fourth quarter. The Heat couldn't shake them until getting three straight offensive rebounds during a 100-second possession in the closing minutes, and are bracing for another tight one Saturday.

"This is a very possession-oriented series. Not a lot of turnovers," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Possessions really, really matter and those extra ones can really be backbreakers."

No NBA team has won a series after falling behind 3-0, so it doesn't take all that considerable postseason experience the Nets roster possesses to realize Brooklyn has to win the next game.

"We need a win. It's a must-win," Williams said. "We can't afford to go down 3-0. We need to get these at home starting with the one on Saturday."

The Nets are only 1-10 against the Heat in the postseason, but they also hadn't defeated Miami in the regular season for 4 1/2 years before ending that 13-game skid with a victory on Nov. 1. That was in their home opener and cemented their belief that they could topple the champs in the spring.

They insist that confidence is still there.

"Our mindset is positive," reserve Mirza Teletovic said. "We know we can beat this team at home."

Nets cool Heat, cut East semifinal deficit to 2-1

NEW YORK (AP) Two losses in Miami didn't faze Paul Pierce, nor did 16 quick points by LeBron James.

The postseason, Pierce said repeatedly, is no time to panic. And the Heat, apparently, are nothing to fear.

"We're not scared of them," Pierce said.

Joe Johnson scored 19 points, Andray Blatche had career playoff highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and the Brooklyn Nets handed the Heat their first loss this postseason, 104-90 on Saturday night in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Pierce scored 14 points, Deron Williams and Kevin Garnett bounced back from awful offensive efforts, and the Nets withstood James' 16-point first quarter and held him to two baskets over the final three quarters.

"Tonight was the type of urgency we're going to need for the rest of the series," Pierce said.

Brooklyn, which swept Miami in the regular season, can tie the series with a victory at home Monday night in Game 4.

"I think this is a must-win coming up Monday," Garnett said. "If we want to give ourselves any type of room ... any type of chance, I think that we've definitely got to take care of home."

James scored 28 points for the Heat, who hadn't even faced a fourth-quarter deficit in these playoffs before having their eight-game winning streak in the postseason snapped. It was their first loss since Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

The two-time defending champions were having an easy path to another finals, winning their last four games by double digits. But the Nets shook off the Heat's sizzling start, then held them to 33 points over the middle two quarters to take control.

"I've been part of a lot of series and understand that the series is never won in two games or in three games," James said. "And you move onto the next one and you learn from the previous one how you can get better."

Mirza Teletovic and Shaun Livingston each scored 12 points for the Nets in their first home postseason victory ever against the Heat. Teletovic made four of Brooklyn's 15 3-pointers.

Williams, 0 for 9 in Game 2, shot just 3 for 11 but finished with nine points and 11 assists. Garnett, just 2 for 10 for four total points in Miami, shot 5 of 6 for 10 points and seven rebounds.

Dwyane Wade scored 20 points and James grabbed eight rebounds, but his night fell well short of what it could have been after his ferocious first quarter.

He made a free throw to bring Miami to 59-56 in the third quarter, but Teletovic made a 3-pointer, followed by baskets by Blatche, Johnson and Livingston to make it 68-56. Teletovic made two more 3s and Williams knocked down another before the end of the quarter, which ended with the Nets ahead 77-63.

Teletovic opened the fourth with another 3, and Alan Anderson hit a pair later in the period while also getting in a skirmish with Ray Allen that led to double technical fouls. The Nets held Allen to two baskets after he hurt them in both games in Miami.

The Nets shot 53 percent from the field, 60 percent from behind the arc, and outrebounded the Heat 43-27. Brooklyn outscored Miami 53-41 in the second half, making 20 of 33 shots.

"To sum it up, they outplayed us. They outplayed us, particularly in that whole second half," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Williams ended his slump with the game's first basket, but Miami made eight of its first 11 shots, including one by James while Pierce was trying to wrap him up and was called for a flagrant foul. James was 6 of 7 in the period, and the Nets were lucky to be down only 30-29 when Livingston threw in a 36-footer just before the buzzer.

James then took just one shot in the second, a missed 3-pointer, and the Nets pulled ahead late in the period and took a 51-49 lead into halftime.

Notes: The Nets improved to just 2-10 in the postseason against the Heat, who swept them in the 2005 first round and beat them in five games in the 2006 Eastern Conference semifinals. ... Rapper Busta Rhymes, from Brooklyn, announced the Nets' starting lineup. Beyonce, Jay-Z, Jerry Seinfeld, Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudekis were among the other entertainers in the crowd.

THE FACT: The Nets soundly beat the Heat 104-90 to cut the series deficit to 2-1.

THE LEAD: Solid play from the starters and a few standout performances from the bench propelled the Nets to the biggest win in their young Brooklyn history in front of a loud crowd. The Nets were prolific from long range (15-for-25, 60 percent) and owned the boards, outrebounding Miami 43-27. The Nets responded to a dominant first quarter from LeBron James (28 points, eight rebounds, five assists) by holding the Heat to 33 points in the middle two quarters. A 26-14 third quarter for the home team was capped by a Deron Williams 3-pointer from the wing to push the lead to 77-61 lead.

Joe Johnson (19 points) led six Nets in double figures. Andray Blatche (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Mirza Teletovic (12 points, six rebounds) led the bench brigade. Williams continued to struggle with his shot, but handed out a game-high 11 assists and finished a game-high plus-18, giving the Nets a sorely needed advantage at the point guard position. Players not named James and Dwyane Wade accounted for less than half of the Heat's scoring load.

THE STAT: The Nets doubled the Heat's assist total, 26-13.

TURNING POINT: Shaun Livingston hit his second 3-pointer of the season on a running shot from just over the midcourt line to cut the Heat's lead to 30-29 at the end of the first quarter. From there on, the Nets were the better team on Saturday night.
