Nets-Raptors Preview

TORONTO (AP) For Raptors' All-Star DeMar DeRozan, the waiting between playoff games is the hardest part.

The Brooklyn Nets, however, don't mind one bit.

The slow pace of Toronto's first-round playoff series against Brooklyn, with two days off between each of the first three games, isn't really to DeRozan's liking. Extra down time after a disappointing Game 1 wasn't what the Raptors guard wanted.

"It's tough," DeRozan said Monday. "You have a tough game, you're used to getting right back out there and making up for it."

DeRozan will get his chance when the Raptors host the Nets on Tuesday night, hoping to bounce back after a 94-87 defeat in Game 1.

The Nets, who flew home to New York between games, have no problem with the relaxed schedule. Brooklyn went 5-13 in the second half of back-to-backs this season, losing twice to Toronto.

"We haven't been great in back-to-backs all year so thank goodness we don't have to do that," Nets forward Paul Pierce said Monday.

"We have probably one of the worst records in back-to-back games. Maybe that's due to the age of this team, maybe that's just due to fatigue. Who knows? There are none in the playoffs so it's definitely advantageous to us."

Pierce also said he feels stronger this April than he did with Boston last year. After taking on a bigger workload in the wake of Rajon Rondo's knee injury, Pierce was "kind of spent" by the time the playoffs arrived, and the Celtics lost their first-round series to New York in six games.

Brooklyn coach Jason Kidd, meanwhile, had a different take on why Pierce was feeling fresher this spring.

"I thought he was worn down last year because he had to guard me," the former Knicks guard joked.

Here are five things to watch for in Game 2 on Tuesday night at Air Canada Centre:

THE PIERCE PROBLEM: One key for the Raptors in Game 2 will be controlling Pierce, who scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Amir Johnson and Patrick Patterson drew the defensive assignment on Pierce in Game 1, and it wasn't easy for either one. "He's an NBA champion, he will be a Hall of Famer," Patterson said of Pierce. "He can do so much at that position, he causes havoc for me and Amir." With that in mind, the Raptors are considering changes when it comes to defending Pierce on Tuesday. "I don't want to tip my hand totally, but we're looking at different people," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said.

TRYING TO TAKE TWO: In his 10 previous trips to the playoffs, Pierce only remembers one occasion where his team was able to start a series by winning consecutive games on an opponent's court. But that's the ambitious goal Pierce and the Nets have set after winning Game 1. "We're going up there with urgency to try and get a second win and that's all that's on our mind," Pierce said. "Since I've been in the playoffs, I've only done it one time. It's a hard thing to do. We've got to understand how hard it is to go and win in another building two times in a row in the playoffs. We've got to come with that mentality and nothing less."

CRYING FOUL: Displeasure with the officiating in Game 1 has become a simmering story line among the Raptors, particularly an absence of calls in their favor in the fourth quarter. Brooklyn was whistled for 18 fouls through the first three quarters Saturday, but only one in the fourth. "I'm not going to comment on officiating, except to say I went back to watch the calls in the fourth quarter and we didn't get any," Casey said. "And that's unusual." DeRozan, however, said Toronto didn't do enough to earn trips to the line down the stretch. "I think we kind of shied away from being aggressive, trying to attack the rim," he said. "We got to the free throw line earlier in the game and we kind of settled for jump shots in the fourth quarter."

DYNAMIC DEBUT: DeRozan and Toronto guard Terrence Ross both struggled in their playoff debuts, but Jonas Valanciunas came up big. The second-year center from Lithuania scored 17 points and set a Raptors playoff record with 18 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. He became the first Toronto player to notch a double-double in his playoff debut since Tracy McGrady did it against the Knicks in 2000. "He's trying to own the paint right now," Raptors guard Kyle Lowry said of Valanciunas. "You can see the way he's playing with a sense of urgency that he understands the situation." The one negative in Valanciunas' otherwise glittering Game 1 performance? He had six of Toronto's 19 turnovers.

KEEPING IT CLOSE: If recent history is any indication, Game 2 is likely to go right down to the wire. In five meetings between the Nets and Raptors so far this season, including Game 1, neither team has led by more than five points heading into the fourth quarter. Brooklyn's seven-point margin of victory Saturday is the second-biggest in the five games so far, three of which have been decided by four or fewer points.

DeRozan scores 30 as Raptors beat Nets 100-95

TORONTO (AP) DeMar DeRozan put his playoff jitters aside and turned in an All-Star performance for the Toronto Raptors.

DeRozan scored 30 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 15 points and 14 rebounds and the Raptors beat the Brooklyn Nets 100-95 on Tuesday night, evening their first-round playoff series at one game apiece.

A first-time All-Star this season, DeRozan struggled in his postseason debut on Saturday. He went 3 for 13 from the field and scored 14 points in Toronto's 94-87 loss.

On Tuesday, DeRozan eclipsed that total in the fourth quarter alone, scoring 17 of Toronto's 36 points.

"We knew he was going to bounce back from the first game," Brooklyn's Deron Williams said. "He took over the game, hit some crucial shots, some tough shots. We've got to do a better job of stopping him, especially late."

DeRozan made nine of 21 shots and went 12 for 14 at the free-throw line, hitting nine of 11 attempts in the final quarter.

"He bounced back, refocused," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "Making those free throws down the stretch was huge. For him to come through after a tough first game and everyone doubting him, I was really happy with that."

So was Raptors guard Kyle Lowry.

"Tonight he showed what he can do," Lowry said of DeRozan. "He did an unbelievable job of attacking, being aggressive."

Amir Johnson scored 16 points and Lowry had 14 for the Raptors, who outrebounded the Nets 52-30. It was Valanciunas' second straight playoff double-double.

"There was no way we were going to lose that game," Amir Johnson said. "It was a must-win for us."

Joe Johnson scored 18 points, Williams had 15 and Mirza Teletovic 14 for the Nets, who will host Game 3 on Friday night.

"There's a lot of positive things that we've done in these first two games," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "Now we've got to go home and protect home."

Hampered by foul trouble throughout the game, Brooklyn's Paul Pierce went 2 for 11 from the field, including 0 for 6 from 3-point range. He finished with seven points.

Pierce was upset that the Nets failed to take a 2-0 stranglehold on the series.

"We had them on the ropes," Pierce said. "Definitely."

Kevin Garnett scored 13 points and Shaun Livingston had 12 for the Nets, who led 66-64 heading into the fourth and couldn't take advantage of 21 Toronto turnovers.

"They did a better job of executing and we just couldn't stop them," Williams said.

Pierce converted a three-point play on his first field goal of the game to tie it at 83 with 3:48 left, but back-to-back jumpers by DeRozan on either side of a missed shot by Pierce gave the Raptors an 89-85 lead with 2:11 remaining.

Garnett cut the deficit in half with a pair of free throws, but Lowry scored a driving layup, and then forced a steal that led to a Patterson foul shot that gave Toronto a five-point edge. Pierce answered with another three-point play, and the Nets trailed 92-90 with 59 seconds remaining.

A turnover by DeRozan gave possession back to Brooklyn, but Pierce missed a 3 and the Raptors grabbed the rebound. DeRozan was fouled and made both with 20 seconds left, giving the Raptors a 94-90 lead.

Joe Johnson made a layup but Amir Johnson replied with a thunderous dunk, delighting the crowd of 20,382. Pierce missed again, DeRozan grabbed the rebound and sealed it with four free throws in the final 12 seconds.

"It's everything you dream about, especially when you become a professional athlete, to be at the highest level and have the trust of your coaching staff and your teammates to have the ball in your hands and win a game for them," DeRozan said. "That's big."

NOTES: Toronto's 52 rebounds were a playoff record. Toronto had 50 rebounds against Detroit on Apr. 24, 2002. ... Brooklyn matched a team playoff high with 14 steals. ... Casey finished fifth in NBA Coach of the Year voting, well behind winner Gregg Popovich of San Antonio. Casey got five first-place votes, nine second-place votes and 18 third-place votes. ... Toronto mayor Rob Ford attended the game. Ford, who has acknowledged smoking crack cocaine, was showered with a mix of cheers and boos when he was shown on the screen during a stoppage in play.

Notebook: Raptors 100, Nets 95

THE FACT: The Toronto Raptors beat the Brooklyn Nets to tie their Eastern Conference first-round series 1-1.

THE LEAD: DeMar DeRozan scored 17 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, while Kyle Lowry added 8 of his 14 in the frame to lift the Toronto Raptors past the Brooklyn Nets 100-95 at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday.

After a horrendous first three quarters that saw Lowry and DeRozan shoot a combined 6-of-24, the dynamic Raptors backcourt responded and took over down the stretch. The duo shot a combined 7-of-8 from the floor and 10-of-14 from the free throw line in the fourth.

Joe Johnson led the Nets with 18 points, Deron Williams chipped in with 15 and five assists and Mirza Teletovic had 14 points off of the bench.

The Nets kept things close until the final minutes, getting a couple of open looks for Game 1 hero Paul Pierce, except this time the shots didn't fall. Pierce was limited to just 25 minutes due to foul trouble and made only two of his 11 attempts on the night.

QUOTABLE: "We've been here when people just thought you could come into Toronto and get a win. We've been through all that, the frustrating seasons. We want everybody to know when you play against the Toronto Raptors you are going to have to fight, you are going to have to bring your game. That's the passion every single guy on this team has, this organization has. For us to go through the struggle and start from the bottom and work our way up and still don't get the respect that we deserve, we understand that we still have a long way to go."

THE STAT: The Raptors crushed the Nets on the boards, outrebounding them 52-30 in the game.

TURNING POINT: After a Kevin Garnett dunk tied the game at 85 with 3:09 remaining in the game. DeRozan and Lowry took over for the Raptors. DeRozan made back-to-back jumpers and, after a pair of Garnett free throws, Lowry sliced to the bucket for a layup to give the Raptors a three-point lead. The Nets would cut it to two, but never get any closer.

QUOTABLE II: "The game is about adjustments. And, honestly I am student of the game. I go back and watch the whole game, two or three times and just understand where I can get my shots, opportunities where I can score and get easy buckets and just me taking advantage of the mistakes I made in the first game and not doing the same thing in this game. Coming out more aggressive. "

HOT: Jonas Valanciunas picked up where he left off in Game 1, recording his second straight double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Valanciunas is averaging 16 points and 16 rebounds per game in the series.

NOT: For the second consecutive game, Raptors guard Terrence Ross was a non-factor. In Game 1, Ross was held to just 16 minutes of action because of foul trouble and made only one of his four attempts from the floor, settling for just three points. On Tuesday, Ross managed two points on 1-of-8 shooting. He averaged 11 points on just 40 per cent shooting in the last eight games of the regular season.

NOT: Williams has shot 13-of-35 (37 percent) in the first two games of the series.

QUOTABLE III: "We didn't do a good job protecting the boards, keeping them off of the boards and then we allowed 36 points in the fourth quarter, which is way too high for us as somebody that prides themselves on getting stops, especially down the stretch. We didn't do that tonight."

GOOD MOVE: After opting not to use Andre Kirilenko at all in Game 1, Nets coach Jason Kidd went to him for 20 minutes of action. During this stretch, Kirilenko wrecked havoc on the defensive end of the floor with four steals. He also had four points and three rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Not unlike his coaching counterpart, Raptors head coach Dwane Casey went to a player that did not play in Game 1 to give his team a lift on Tuesday. Seldom-used forward Landry Fields saw 18 minutes of floor time and, despite not attempting a single shot, had a huge impact on the game. Fields grabbed four rebounds, had a steal and a blocked shot and was a plus-seven on the night. He also played excellent defense on Johnson, slowing him at crucial points in the fourth quarter.

ROOKIE WATCH: Nets forward Mason Plumlee tallied four points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 21 minutes of floor time.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Just as he did in Game 1, rapper Drake took in the game courtside. ...Toronto Mayor Rob Ford watched the game from the 300 level. ... The final attendance at the ACC was 18,900 (sellout).

NOTABLE: Raptors forward Amir Johnson set a new playoff career high with 16 points.
