Heat-Pacers Preview

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Pacers coach Frank Vogel walked into Monday's practice with a simple message for players as they adapt to Miami's new wrinkle - using LeBron James in the post.

He's not going to overhaul the team's philosophy for Game 4. They just need to execute better.

Less than 24 hours after blowing a chance to take control of the series at home against the defending NBA champs, the Pacers walked back into Bankers Life Fieldhouse trying to figure out what went wrong in Game 3. It didn't take Vogel long to come up with a few answers.

"We've got to do a better job on the ball, we've got to be more active on our helps and we've got to double (LeBron James) more," Vogel said before players watched the ugly reminders on tape. "We're not going to double him every time he touches the ball, but we'll look at some things and try to break his rhythm."

Anything would be helpful at this point with Indiana in desperate need of a win, now trailing 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

They were hoping home-court advantage would help them take command of the series after stealing one in Miami.

Instead, James and his teammates refused to give in against a Pacers team that has repeatedly shown it will not back down from challenges.

After scoring 36 points in a Game 2 loss, the NBA's four-time MVP promised to make up for the two turnovers in the final 30 seconds of that game. Did he ever.

James scored 22 points in Game 3 and seized control of the offense by working from the post. The surprise move allowed the Heat to beat the Pacers at their own game, outscoring Indiana 52-36 in the paint and opening up mid-range jumpers for James' teammates. The Heat wound up shooting 54.5 percent from the field, setting a franchise playoff record with 70 points in the first half and committing just five turnovers - a performance that even had the Heat calling it their best game of this year's playoffs.

If Indiana intends to stick around a while longer in the Eastern Conference finals, they can't fool around with James in the middle.

"I'm much better than I was two or three years ago," James said Monday when asked about playing the post. "I've still got a lot of things to improve, but I could work down there all game now. That's something I probably couldn't have done two years ago."

Indiana has the more difficult job - making James less efficient.

The Pacers know what it will take.

Pacers center Roy Hibbert credited All-Star swingman Paul George for making things tough on James throughout the first three games of the series but acknowledged George needs more help from teammates to protect the middle. Vogel, who has relied almost exclusively on man-to-man defense, is now talking about double-teaming the Heat's most versatile player.

George, a second-team all-NBA defender, has another solution.

"I've just got to battle and push him out a little further," George said. "He's tough. He's obviously gifted physically and he's strong, so it's tough but it's something I've got to learn."

The bigger issue for Indiana may simply be staying the course.

Indiana looked nothing like it did in Miami, when it pushed the Heat to brink in Game 1 and thwarted every challenge Miami threw at them to hold on in Game 2.

On Sunday night, Miami started fast, took control in the second quarter and never allowed Indiana to get closer than seven. It was the first time the Pacers lost at home in the playoffs and the 18-point deficit matched their worst home loss all season.

For the Heat, this is nothing new. They've won 23 of their last 24 on the road and have now set an NBA record with five straight double-digit road wins in the playoffs.

Perhaps better focus.

"Coming on the road is tougher," Wade said. "At home you can make mistakes and get away with it, but on the road you can't make as many mistakes and you have to give yourself a chance. That's all you can do."

The Pacers didn't get away with their mistakes Sunday, and that has put them in the unenviable position of needing a win Tuesday just to avoid facing an elimination game in Miami on Thursday.

But to an Indiana team that has relied on grit and determination all season, they know there is no margin for error now. They must play their best game of the season Tuesday night.

"It sucks playing with our backs against the wall, but that's the situation," George said. "We knew that's how the champions would respond. But every game is going to get tougher and tougher. It's going to get tougher to score and we have to learn to adjust on the floor."

Pacers get even with Miami after 99-92 victory

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers played desperate Tuesday night.

They relentlessly attacked the basket, continually won the battle for loose balls, dominated the glass and, yes, turned the tables on Miami yet again.

Roy Hibbert finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Lance Stephenson added 20 points, and the Pacers closed the game on a 16-6 run to pull away from the defending NBA champs for a 99-92 victory.

Just like that, the Eastern Conference finals are tied at 2 and the pressure has swung back to Miami.

"We're never going to give up. We're relentless," Hibbert said after another big game. "All those guys in there, they believe we can win. No matter what all the analysts or whoever says anything, they count us out, those guys in the locker room were ready to play and we went out and played our hearts out."

Hibbert will get no argument from coach Frank Vogel, who challenged his team to bring it or go down swinging.

Indiana scored with punch after punch.

The Pacers revved up the crowd with an opening 11-0 run, got the Heat in foul trouble and answered every challenge Miami posed in a physical game that had bodies flying, tempers flaring and LeBron James stunned after fouling out of a playoff game for only the second time in his career.

Indiana believed this was the only way it could get back into the best-of-seven series after giving home-court advantage back to Miami two nights earlier.

The players promised to treat Game 4 as if they were playing a decisive seventh game, and it showed.

An angry Paul George uncharacteristically smacked the floor after being called for a foul in the third quarter, leading to a technical foul on Vogel that seemed to get Indiana refocused. The defense continually contested shots by James and his high-scoring teammates. The four-time MVP finished with 24 points but was only 8 of 18 from the field. And Indiana reverted to its more typical style, holding a 49-30 rebounding advantage and outscoring Miami 50-32 in the paint.

"That's what the series is about, who can get to who and do it for longer periods of time. They kept us out of the paint," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We'll just have to do it better."

The Heat now face a stunning must-win scenario Thursday night in Game 5 or come back to Indy for Game 6 fighting for their playoff lives.

Over the next 48 hours, the Heat will try to figure out what went wrong in a game full of oddities.

Chris Bosh crashed to the court clutching his right knee after a first-half collision. In the second half, he limped to the locker room after appearing to twist his right ankle on a foul call but returned a few minutes later trying to shake off the injury.

Dwyane Wade limped noticeably during the first half and wound up in foul trouble, too.

Miami's three All-Stars were a dismal 14 of 39 from the field, even though James spent part of the night being defended by Stephenson because of George's foul trouble. Bosh finished with seven points, Wade with 16 and no Miami starter had more than six rebounds.

"We had them right where we wanted them, but every time we would get a stop, especially in the fourth quarter, we didn't come up with the rebound," Bosh said. "It was there for us, but we didn't capitalize."

Nobody was more frustrated than James, who was called for a technical foul in the first quarter and four fouls over the final 12 minutes - the last an offensive foul. After walking from one end of the court to the Miami bench, James sat disbelievingly on a press table and spent the final 56 seconds mumbling to the officials.

Again he promised to make amends.

"It was a couple of fouls that I didn't feel like were fouls, personal fouls on me, but that's how the game goes sometimes," James said.

Miami had its chances, but Indiana simply refused to back down.

When the Heat used a 9-0 run to take a 60-54 lead early in the third quarter, Indiana answered immediately with a 10-0 run to regain the lead. When James committed an offensive foul with 2 seconds left in the third quarter, his first turnover since the end of Game 2, the Pacers got a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Stephenson to make it 77-70.

When the Heat rallied in the fourth, charging back from an 81-72 deficit to take an 86-83 lead, the Pacers answered again. George drew a foul on James and wound up tying the score on a three-point play with 5:38 to go.

Ray Allen broke the tie with a 3 from the left wing late in the shot clock, but Indiana answered again. This time, David West made 1 of 2 free throws, Stephenson knocked down a 19-footer, Hibbert scored on a putback and then completed a three-point play to end the 7-0 run that gave Indiana a 94-89 lead with 90 seconds left.

Miami never got another chance to tie it.

"I just felt the guys showed a lot of fight," West said. "We've got a group of guys on this team that are full of heart. A tough group, willing to step up to the challenge. We knew this was a make-or-break game for us."

Notes: West finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. .. Indiana is now 3-1 against Miami at home this season and 7-1 at home in the playoffs. ... Two days after shooting 54.5 percent against the Pacers, Miami was just 30 of 77 for 39 percent. ... Katie Stam, the 2009 Miss America from Indiana, sang the National Anthem.

THE FACTS: Roy Hibbert scored 23 points, including a huge three-point play with 1:30 remaining, and Lance Stephenson added 20 as Indiana outscored Miami 13-3 in the final five minutes to pull out a 99-92 victory in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals Tuesday in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Hibbert followed his own miss and drew LeBron James' fifth foul to put Indiana up 94-89 and Stephenson answered James' 3-pointer with a strong drive into traffic. James fouled out on the next possession, the result of an illegal screen against Stephenson, leaving Miami without its closer. James scored 24 but did little damage in the post after being dominant there in Game 3. Mario Chalmers scored 20 and Dwyane Wade 16 for the Heat. The series, tied 2-2, shifts to Miami for Game 5 Thursday.

QUOTABLE: "We're mentally tough. Not one guy in that locker room didn't believe we were going to win this game tonight. ... We know they're the champs. THE STAT: Indiana outscored Miami 50-32 in the paint. In two victories, the Pacers hold a 90-72 edge. In Miami's two wins, the Heat hold a 112-84 advantage.

THE STAT II: Hibbert's 20-plus point, 10-plus rebound performance in Game 4 marked his fifth such game of the playoffs. During the season, Hibbert had seven 20-10 games.

TURNING POINT: After the Pacers controlled most of the first half, Miami threw two big punches, but neither knocked out the Pacers. The Heat bridged intermission with a 24-10 run to take a 60-54 lead but David West provided the answer, scoring seven points in a 10-point counter that put Indiana right back in front. The Pacers were up 81-72 when a Tyler Hansbrough putback was waved off because the shot-clock was not reset when Hibbert's first attempt bounced off the rim and officials called the 24-second violation. Indiana sagged and Miami pounced with a 17-5 run to take an 89-86 lead on Ray Allen's 3-pointer with 5:14 remaining. But the Pacers again answered, scoring the next eight points, five on second-chance buckets by Hibbert, to regain control.

HOT: Hibbert shot 10-for-16 and Stephenson 9-for-15. James made 4-for-7 from the 3-point line.

NOT: James was 4-for-11 inside the arc, Wade shot 5-for-15, Chalmers 6-for-14 and Allen 4-for-13 for Miami. Paul George missed all four of his 3-point attempts for the Pacers.
