Knicks-Pacers Preview

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Pacers won't know until Saturday night whether point guard George Hill will start in Game 6 against New York.

Hill participated in the team's morning shootaround, which is part of the process of passing his concussion test. But doctors had not yet cleared Hill to play.

"He just did some work today. He looked fine, but he has to do more tests this afternoon," coach Frank Vogel said. "There's a long list of things that's part of the NBA's protocol. He's in the middle of that process. He's not ruled out, not cleared to play. He's a game-time decision."

Vogel said he was preparing to play without Hill.

Hill scored 26 points Tuesday night in Game 4 after a first-quarter collision with Knicks center Tyson Chandler. Two days later, after the team's shootaround, Hill was still complaining of headaches. Team doctors then diagnosed him with a concussion, forcing him to sit out Game 5. His replacement, D.J. Augustin, played nearly 39 minutes and had no assists as the Pacers lost 85-75. The win allowed New York to climb back within 3-2 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

Indiana gets a second chance to close out the series Saturday at home, where they are 5-0 in the postseason and have won all five games by double digits.

Vogel has not said who will start Saturday if Hill does not play.

"We prepare for guys to be out. D.J. Augustin, Ben Hansbrough. Lance (Stephenson) understands that he has to play some (point guard)," Vogel said. "They've prepared for that all year. . Mentally for those guys, knowing might help them a little bit."

The Knicks aren't sure what to expect, either.

Coach Mike Woodson told reporters Friday that his team was preparing as if Hill would play. At Saturday's shootaround, Woodson explained he wasn't sure what to expect, though the Knicks couldn't let that affect them in Game 6.

"It doesn't matter who plays for them. We've still got to do what we do. It's about what we do at this particular time," Woodson said.

Will the decision about Hill make a difference in this series?

"Finding out literally an hour or two hours before the game (Thursday) is a rough spot to put a guy in. For all of us, really," Pacers forward David West said. "We had to change some of the things we were accustomed to doing, take some of George's stuff out of the package. But again, we're prepared. Had a good day yesterday, a good day today. Our focus is where it needs to be."

D.J. Augustin replaced Hill in the lineup Thursday and the Pacers struggled. They finished with 19 turnovers and wound up losing 85-75, a victory that got the Knicks within 3-2 and sent the series back to Indy for Game 6. Augustin played nearly 39 minutes and scored 12 points with no assists.

When asked what he would do Saturday if Hill couldn't play, Vogel replied curtly, "No comment," before explaining he didn't want to give away his game plan, a comment that drew chuckles.

If Augustin doesn't start, one possibility would be using All-Star Paul George at the spot. Vogel did that at times in Game 5 and George responded with a double-double - 23 points and 10 rebounds - and six assists.

"Honestly, I felt like having the ball in my hands put me in rhythm and the shots started falling for me," George said.

That's something the Pacers certainly need. They've only closed out three playoff series at home since 2000: last year against Orlando; in 2000 against Milwaukee in the first round and against New York in the conference finals.

And they don't want this chance to slip away regardless of who is healthy and who isn't.

"Here is where we really want to end it," George said. "If not, it will really be up for grabs."

The Knicks understand, too.

They've spent most of the series trying to rally after losing Game 1 at home, and with time running short on the comebacks, Woodson knows this is no time to play games. His lineup changes helped New York stabilize its struggling offense in Game 5, which they led from wire-to-wire.

With or without Hill, New York must play the same way Saturday at Indiana, where they're 0-4 this season, or they'll be heading home for the summer instead of going home for a decisive seventh game.

"Again, we've got to validate what we did last night," Woodson said. "That was a must-win; our backs were against the wall. They still are. When we lost Game 1, we knew right then and there that the only way to get out of this series was to go get one at Indiana and this is our last chance."

Pacers knock out Knicks with 106-99 win in Game 6

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Indiana spent the entire season perfecting its defense.

On Saturday, it produced the biggest payoff for the Pacers in nearly a decade.

Roy Hibbert's block of Carmelo Anthony's dunk attempt midway through the fourth quarter spurred an 11-2 run that rallied the Pacers to a 106-99 victory in Game 6 of their second-round series, sending them into their first Eastern Conference final since 2004.

New York native Lance Stephenson scored nine points in the run, finishing with a playoff career-high 25.

"That's why they pay me the big bucks this summer, so I have to protect the paint," said Hibbert, who signed a $58 million contract last summer. "If all else fails, meaning the offense, I have to protect the paint."

With players from both teams standing on the court as the final seconds ticked off and Pacers fans roaring in appreciation, the sellout crowd wasted little time breaking into chants of "Beat The Heat!"

For Indiana, it sets up a postseason rematch with the defending NBA champs, the team that eliminated them last May after the Pacers had taken a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven semifinals. The Heat wound up winning Game 4 at Indiana and followed that with two more wins as Danny Granger struggled with a knee injury.

Indiana used the lessons from that series as motivation to improve this season and wound up beating the Heat twice at home before losing the third game of the season series at Miami. The Pacers will return to South Florida for Game 1 on Wednesday night.

With Granger missing all but five games this season because of the lingering knee injury, the Pacers put an even greater emphasis on playing defense and it showed.

Indiana led the league in rebounding, defensive field goal percentage and defensive 3-point percentage while finishing second in points allowed per game during the regular season. It was no different in the playoffs, as the Knicks found out.

New York had another subpar shooting night Saturday, making just 40 percent of its shots, and again wound up on the wrong side of a 43-36 rebounding discrepancy. In the paint, New York was outscored 52-20, and Anthony, who finished with 39 points, scored just four points in the final 12 minutes when he went 2 of 7 from the field.

Iman Shumpert added 19 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and J.R. Smith scored 15. Nobody else was in double figures.

The combination, as it had been in the previous three losses to Indiana, produced the same frustrating result.

"They have a hell of a defense. They hold down the paint. They do a great job, do a hell of a job of controlling the paint, closing it down, making it tough for guys," Anthony said. "You've got to give them guys credit, especially when they got a chance to set. Roy Hibbert gets to sit in the paint, causes havoc."

It's not just that.

The biggest question coming into Saturday's game was whether starting point guard George Hill would play. He took part in the team's morning shootaround, was cleared by the team doctors and wound up returning two days after missing Game 5 with a concussion. His return gave the Pacers a big boost.

Hill finished with just 12 points on 2-of-10 shooting but had five rebounds and four assists, and kept the Pacers composed enough to commit only nine turnovers - 10 fewer than Thursday night's loss in New York.

The results showed up everywhere on the floor.

Paul George had 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. David West added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Hibbert finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, none bigger than the stuff on Anthony that changed the game. Stephenson had 10 rebounds and three assists in his best postseason game ever.

The reason: He wanted to avoid a trip home.

"I just didn't want to go back to New York and play Game 7," Stephenson said. "Just get it done with now and I'd do whatever it takes to do that today. It showed tonight."

The New York native made sure of it.

After George grabbed the rebound off of Hibbert's block, Stephenson took a pass from West and scored on a layup to tie the score at 92 with 4:51 left in the game. Stephenson followed that with a steal and drove in for a layup, drawing a foul and completing a three-point play. After grabbing another rebound and making two more free throws, West tipped in a miss and Stephenson closed the decisive spurt with another layup. Suddenly, the Pacers led 101-94 with 1:53 to go.

New York never got another chance to tie the score or take the lead again despite making a far more typical 13 of 30 from 3-point range.

"It's tough to go out this way," coach Mike Woodson said. "I didn't make it happen for us and that's what's disappointing."

The Pacers have a far different goal now as they get ready to face LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Miami.

"We're not satisfied with where we're at," coach Frank Vogel said. "We feel like there's no ceiling on this team this year."

Notes: New York failed to become the ninth team to rally from a 3-1 deficit. ... Indianapolis 500 pole winner Ed Carpenter made the short trip from the track to Bankers Life Fieldhouse, where he is a regular attendee. ... Colts coach Chuck Pagano also attended the game. ... The Knicks were 18 of 18 from the free throw line.

THE FACTS: The least experienced Indiana starter came up the biggest when it mattered most as Lance Stephenson scored a career-high 25 points and added 10 rebounds to spark the Pacers to a series-clinching 106-99 victory over New York Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and into the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2004. Paul George scored 23 and Roy Hibbert 21 with 12 rebounds and five blocks for the Pacers, who earned a rematch of last year's conference semifinal loss to Miami. New York got 39 points from Carmelo Anthony but saw its season come to an end in Game 6.

QUOTABLE: "It's believable but it's unbelievable. He's got no playoff experience whatsoever but he has some of the best basketball instincts I've ever been around ... the kid's got a lot of guts."

THE STAT: All five Indiana starters led the team in scoring at least once during the series. The Knicks were led in scoring by Anthony in all six games.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers appeared to be in control in the third quarter, leading by as many as 12 points, but Iman Shumpert caught fire, hitting three straight 3-pointers in a span of 64 seconds to spark a 12-2 run that tied the game at 72-all. Chris Copeland and J.R. Smith than added to a streak of seven consecutive 3-pointers made as the Knicks took a 92-90 lead with 5:42 remaining. Indiana's defense dug in as Anthony missed two shots and committed three turnovers while Stephenson scored seven straight points in a 9-0 run to put Indiana in front 99-92. A three-point play by Smith and a dunk by Anthony cut it to 103-99 with 49 seconds left but the Pacers closed it out at the line.

QUOTABLE II: "I couldn't wait for this game. I couldn't sleep last night. I was very focused tonight and it showed. I wanted to be aggressive, take it to the basket and make smart plays."

HOT: Stephenson shot 9-for-13 and George 9-for-15 for Indiana as all five starters scored in double figures, combining for 98 points. Anthony was 15-for-29 for the Knicks and Shumpert was 5-for-6 from the 3-point line. Copeland was 3-for-6 from the arc.

NOT: Smith closed out a miserable series with 4-for-15 shooting. For the six games he shot 26-for-90 (.289), including 9-for-39 (.231) from the 3-point line. ... Tyson Chandler fouled out with two points, six rebounds and zero blocked shots. ... Raymond Felton missed all seven of his shots.

NOTABLE: Indiana got a big pregame boost when starting point guard George Hill was cleared to play. He missed the Game 5 loss in New York with a concussion but completed all the steps in the NBA-mandated concussion protocol in the two days prior to Game 6. Hill scored 12 points with five rebounds and four assists. ... Anthony made his first two fourth-quarter buckets of the series in Indianapolis, but finished 2-for-14 with six points in the final period on the road. ... The Pacers outrebounded the Knicks 43-36 for the game and 194-143 in their four wins. ... New York lost all five games in Indianapolis this season. ... The Pacers outscored the Knicks 34-18 from the free throw line and committed just nine turnovers. ... Knicks guard Jason Kidd finished his season by going 10 straight games without scoring, going 0-for-17 overall, 0-for-10 from the 3-point line. ... New York had a 31-8 edge in bench scoring for the game, 187-89 for the series.
