Spurs-Warriors Preview

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Forgive the San Antonio Spurs if they aren't that excited about holding a 3-2 series lead over the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals.

After all, they've been ahead twice before.

If the Spurs want to close out the Warriors in Game 6 on Thursday night at rowdy Oracle Arena, they'll have to do what neither team has in this series: win consecutive games. Golden State also is 4-0 after a loss in the playoffs.

"Nobody talks about getting this over with like you've got a rash," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Like you can take a pill or put some cream on it, it's going to be gone. This is a war. They're a class team. They bust their (butts) at both ends of the floor. It's not about getting rid of anything. It's about going and playing and that's about it."

San Antonio has increasingly shown its veteran savvy the last three games, and Golden State has looked like it's finally wearing down from all its injuries.

Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and the rest of the Spurs overwhelmed the Warriors in Tuesday night's 109-91 win in San Antonio. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson - described by Coach Mark Jackson as the "greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history" - combined to score just 13 points on 6-of-22 shooting.

Curry has refused to use the left ankle he sprained late in Game 3 as an excuse, but anybody who has watched can clearly see he has been slowed by the injury. Thompson, who failed to even attempt a 3-pointer for the first time all season Tuesday, has been shut down by San Antonio since scoring 34 points in Game 2.

Neither Curry nor Thompson was made available to speak to reporters during the team's light shootaround Wednesday in Oakland. The rest of the Warriors insist they're not worried about the "Splash Brothers" or the team's ability to respond.

"We're never going to quit. We're never going to die. We've got a lot of fight left. This isn't the end," Warriors forward Carl Landry said. "Actually, we're excited about having the opportunity to play in a Game 6. Everybody in that locker room is excited and ready."

The odds are not in Golden State's favor.

Teams that have won Game 5 of a best-of-seven series that was tied have gone on to win the series 88 out of 99 times. However, those teams are 50-49 in Game 6.

The Spurs have won 11 of 12 best-of-seven series when leading 3-2. The last time the Warriors came back from a 3-2 deficit was against the Chicago Bulls in the 1975 Western Conference finals, when the franchise went on to win its only NBA title.

Despite all the doubt, Golden State has overcome every obstacle it has faced this season - from forward Brandon Rush's season-ending left knee injury in the home opener to center Andrew Bogut's sore left ankle throughout the year to All-Star forward David Lee's hip injury in the first round against Denver.

"We are our habits and we have a tight-knit group that is able to make adjustments, own it when they don't play well and bounce back," Jackson said. "I have no doubt that will take place again."

The Spurs are getting production from others besides Parker and Duncan, and that might be the biggest turnaround in a series that has been full of them.

The length of Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green has bothered Curry and Thompson. Duncan and Tiago Splitter have put Bogut in foul trouble in two straight games, and San Antonio's team defense has displayed the "maniacal" effort that Popovich has preached in leading the franchise to four NBA titles.

"That's how it's supposed to be," said Spurs guard Manu Ginobili, who is starting to find success as a facilitator with his shot not falling. "We are not a team that's going to have somebody scoring 40 every game that we can rely on. We need everybody to contribute because we are not the most talented team in the league, so we need a contribution from everybody."

Standing in the way of a second straight Western Conference finals appearance for San Antonio is a gritty Golden State team that has nothing to lose.

Jackson is relying on a phrase he has repeated since the playoffs started: few people expected the Warriors to be a serious contender in the preseason, so there's no pressure on his players, who echoed those sentiments.

For a franchise that has made the playoffs just twice since 1994, the Warriors are relishing the opportunity to push the conference semifinals to a decisive Game 7, which would be in San Antonio on Sunday.

"It's almost like an NCAA tournament game," Landry said. "We just have to go out there and never take any possessions off. After the game, we shouldn't have anything left. We shouldn't even be able to walk to our cars. Everything should be left out on the floor."

Spurs hold off Warriors, advance to West finals

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Slow at the start of the series and strong at the end, the San Antonio Spurs wore out the Golden State Warriors the way they have so many other opponents.

Tim Duncan had 19 points and six rebounds, Kawhi Leonard added 16 points and 10 rebounds and the Spurs held off a furious final rally to beat the Warriors 94-82 in Game 6 on Thursday night and advance to the Western Conference finals.

"They've got great character. They're competitive. They know there's not a million chances to do this sort of thing. They wanted it," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of his squad.

Tony Parker shook off a poor start to score 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and Tiago Splitter added a career-playoff high 14 points for San Antonio, which had a 13-point lead in the third quarter dissolve to two in the final minutes.

Stephen Curry shot 10 of 25 from the floor to score 22 points on a nagging left ankle, and Jarrett Jack had 15 points as the injury-saddled Warriors finally tired. Rookie forward Harrison Barnes also suffered a head injury in the second quarter, returned in the third and was sidelined in the fourth with a headache.

The Spurs outshot Golden State 45 percent to 39 percent and outrebounded them 46 to 40.

Second-seeded San Antonio will open the conference finals at home against Memphis on Sunday. The fifth-seeded Grizzlies eliminated Oklahoma City in five games.

"It's going to be a rough one," Duncan said about the conference finals. "If you thought this was physical, it's going to turn up about 10 notches."

The Spurs lost to the Thunder in the conference finals in six games last season after going ahead 2-0 at home. They haven't been to the NBA Finals since 2007, when they won their fourth title with a sweep of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"I think everybody on the team, we all want to go one more time," Parker said. "It's been a long time."

The Spurs became the first team to win consecutive games in the series and hand the sixth-seeded Warriors consecutive losses in the playoffs - and they did it at just the right time.

The Spurs quieted a standing-room-only crowd late in the third quarter and seemingly seized control for good. Instead, the Warriors roared back.

Klay Thompson, who had 10 points on 4-for-12 shooting, made a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter that sliced San Antonio's lead to three. Then Curry's pull-up jumper brought the Warriors within 77-75 with 4:52 to play.

Parker was 1 for 13 before hitting a corner 3-pointer before Leonard followed with two free throws to put the Spurs up seven.

Jack made a jumper and two free throws to bring the Warriors back again. Then Leonard hit another shot from beyond the arc to put the Spurs ahead 85-79.

Curry and Thompson each had consecutive 3s rim out on the same possession that could've kept Golden State close. But Parker hit another 3-pointer to put San Antonio up 88-79 with 1:15 remaining and send some of the yellow-shirted crowd of 19,596 to the exits.

"I just kept believing in me," said Parker, who added eight assists and finished 3 for 16 from the floor. "My teammates, they were behind me. They would keep telling me, `Keep shooting, they'll go in."'

In the end, most of the Warriors' faithful still stuck around.

Fans serenaded the home team with chants of "Warr-i-ors!" in the final seconds. Curry also grabbed the microphone after the game and thanked fans at half court, breaking the huddle with the crowd, "Just us!"

The Warriors had only made the playoffs once since 1994 before this season and hadn't won two games beyond the first round since 1977.

"It's inspiring to think of what we were able to accomplish this year and the foundation that has been laid," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said.

Added Curry: "It will take a minute to realize the accomplishments we have made, for a Warriors team to be in this position, it's a good thing, and we can build on this for next year."

The Spurs showed incredible ball movement and had the Warriors playing from behind most of the way. San Antonio's first 10 field goals came on an assist, going ahead by 10 points in the second quarter and maintaining that cushion until late.

Golden State stayed close despite more injury setbacks in a season full of them.

Andrew Bogut walked gingerly to the locker room with 8:31 remaining in the second quarter to get his troublesome left ankle re-tapped. At one point, he told Jackson he "couldn't move."

"I was running on fumes the whole series," said Bogut, who had three points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes.

In the second quarter, Barnes fell awkwardly while leaping to contest a layup from Boris Diaw. Barnes hit the court hard and his teammates immediately called for the training staff to attend to him as the arena fell silent. He received six stitches above his right eye at halftime and ran on the court late to start the third quarter, bringing fans to their feet roaring once more.

At least for a moment.

Barnes left the game in the fourth quarter because of a headache. The team said he had passed a concussion test and followed NBA protocol before he returned. Barnes finished with nine points and four rebounds in 31 minutes.

The steady Spurs kept making the Warriors work for every shot and grinding out points on the other end. San Antonio took a 61-48 lead late in the third quarter before Golden State started its final surge.

"The entire series was tough," Duncan said. "They were a great challenge. We expected them to be. A series is about adjustments and we found some ways to counter what they were doing and win these last two games."

THE FACTS: Tim Duncan scored 19 points as the San Antonio Spurs made a second consecutive trip to the Western Conference finals after a series-clinching 94-82 victory against the Golden State Warriors in Game 6 of their conference semifinal on Thursday.

The Spurs, who will host the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 on Sunday, used superlative ball movement -- generating 27 assists on 33 baskets -- and stifling defense to close out the Warriors despite the best efforts of a raucous Oracle Arena crowd.

Tiago Splitter and Kawhi Leonard, Duncan's partners in the Spurs' frontcourt, combined for 30 points as San Antonio never trailed during the final 39 minutes. All five Spurs starters reached double figures.

Stephen Curry tried to carry Golden State with a game-high 22 points, but the Warriors were held to just 38.8 percent (33-for-85) from the floor as an accumulation of injuries finally came due for Golden State; All-Star power forward David Lee was limited to 12 minutes, while small forward Harrison Barnes and center Andrew Bogut were both forced to the bench by game's end.

QUOTABLE: "It was a tough series, really tested our defense. I'm really proud of our guys, that they were pretty darn consistent after the first two games, as far as the defense goes."

THE STAT: The Warriors held San Antonio's key backcourt performers -- Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili -- to a combined 4-for-22 shooting night, but the duo dealt out 19 assists as the Spurs simply moved the ball too quickly for the depleted Golden State defense to catch up.

TURNING POINT: The Spurs opened 4-for-16 on 3-pointers but hit their last three went it counted the most. Parker, who had only three points through the first 44 minutes of the game, drained a pair of treys from either corner and had 10 points down the stretch as San Antonio closed on a 17-7 run.

HOT: Splitter opened the series on the Spurs' bench after suffering a sprained ankle in San Antonio's first-round series, but he returned in full force Thursday, providing 16 points and 10 rebounds, including a pair of open layups to open the fourth quarter. With Memphis big men Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph looming on the horizon, Splitter's contributions should become even more vital as the Spurs try to rectify the unfinished business of losing last year's conference final to Oklahoma City.

QUOTABLE III: "We were disappointed last year, being up 2-0, having home-court [advantage], not being able to go to the [NBA] Finals. It gave us a lot of fuel for this year. . . . I think everybody understands that occasions, opportunities don't come very often. Last year we missed one, a close one."

NOT: Klay Thompson recorded a career-high 34 points in Game 2 of this series, but he was a nonentity the rest of the way. He missed his first five shots Thursday en route to a 4-for-12 performance, making him 34.0 percent (18-for-53) since the Game 2 explosion.

GOOD MOVE: Popovich said he learned his lesson from Games 1 and 2 in San Antonio, where he let the Warriors build up too much momentum before deploying his timeouts. Thursday, he took them early and often -- twice on Curry's first three buckets -- and contained Golden State's runs almost before they began.

ROOKIE WATCH: Harrison Barnes had a standout first half, hounding Parker into a 1-for-6, three-point performance, but he headed to the locker room after a scary fall with 1:15 remaining. Barnes crashed down on his right side after moving to cut off a drive by Spurs forward Boris Diaw, opening up a gash above his right eye that required six stitches at the half. A spokesman said Barnes passed a concussion test at the half, and he played all 12 minutes in the third quarter, but after going 0-for-3 in the period, he did not appear in the fourth period due to what the team described as "a headache."

NOTABLE: Leonard had 10 rebounds to go along with 16 points for his second double-double of the series. . . . Bogut -- who struggled physically in Game 5 -- told reporters his surgically repaired ankle is fine, but he was still very limited Thursday before Warriors coach Mark Jackson finally shut him down midway through the third quarter. "It got to a point . . . where he basically told me he couldn't move," Jackson said. "I wasn't going to chance him. . . . In 873 career NBA games -- counting regular-season and playoff appearances -- this was only the fourth time Ginobili has had double digits in assists but not in points. . . . Jarrett Jack had 15 points in what might be his last game as a Warrior. The guard will be a free agent this summer.
