Heat-Bucks Preview

MILWAUKEE (AP) Now it's Dwyane Wade's turn to make a decision.

The Miami Heat star is getting treatment "around the clock" for his aching right knee, and coach Erik Spoelstra said they'll wait until Sunday to decide whether he'll play in Game 4 against the Milwaukee Bucks. With a chance to close out the series in four games, something the Heat haven't done since LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Wade in Miami, he's sure to want to play.

But with the outcome of the series almost inevitable - no team has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a series - and so much of the playoffs left, taking a game off might be the wiser option.

"It's very difficult right now because it's the playoffs and tomorrow is never promised. During the regular season, you can really pick and choose your spots," Chris Bosh said after the Heat practiced Saturday. "Now, it's just doing what you're supposed to do off the court as much as possible, and hoping when you play out there in the game, you can play as close to 100 percent as you can.

"It's a very tough position to be in right now," Bosh added. "But Dwyane's a competitor and he'll do best thing for himself and for the team."

Wade missed six games near the end of the regular season with three bone bruises, one each along the top, bottom and one side of his right kneecap. Though he continues to feel better, he got banged around good in Miami's 104-91 victory in Game 3 on Thursday night. He was hit in the knee, face and elbow in just one play, and he'd be sure to face similar contact from the Bucks on Sunday.

Miami didn't practice Friday, but Wade spent several hours at Marquette University, his alma mater, getting treatment. He took part in practice Saturday, though Spoelstra said he sat out the "majority" of the Heat's full-court work.

"We'll just continue to evaluate," Spoelstra said. "He's feeling better than yesterday. Tomorrow, we'll see how he feels with more treatment today and we'll go from there. He's been feeling better, really making progress, for three straight weeks."

Losing a top player during the playoffs is a nightmare scenario for any team. When Bosh missed nine games during last year's playoffs with strained abdominal muscles, the Heat went 5-4 in his absence.

But with the addition of Ray Allen and Chris Andersen, this Miami team is even deeper than the one that won the NBA title last season. Allen is averaging almost 17 points in the first three playoff games, and he picked up the slack when Wade struggled offensively in Game 3. He scored 23 points, and his five 3-pointers gave him 322 for his career, topping Reggie Miller's old playoff record by two.

Andersen has played less than 45 minutes, yet has 31 points and 19 rebounds.

"They've had a huge impact, Andersen, Ray, (Norris) Cole," Milwaukee coach Jim Boylan said.

"Anytime you have a championship team, you're always going to have some `unsung heroes.' They have multiple guys who can do it," Boylan added. "They're a team that's built for a championship."

If Wade can't play, Spoelstra would likely start Mike Miller in his place. Though Miller has played all of 2 minutes and change in the first three games, putting him in the starting lineup instead of, say, Allen would allow the Heat to preserve its typical order of substitutes. And continuity is key at this time of year, which partly explains why the Heat refused to get overly excited at the prospect of this group sweeping its first playoff series.

The Heat have had 3-0 leads in the first round the last two years - Philadelphia in 2011 and the Knicks in 2012 - only to lose Game 4 each time.

"It's the most important game because it's our next game," James said flatly. "That's how we approach this game and we look forward to the challenge."

Added Bosh, "Before we got too much ahead of ourselves. That was a problem. We have to keep playing, keep working the game, and not really think about sweeping people."

Make no mistake, though, the Heat would like to cross a sweep of their "to-do" list. (If nothing else, they'd have at least five full days off before the Eastern Conference semifinals would start.)

"That was our concentration and emphasis today: It's 24 hours to do what we have to do," Spoelstra said. "That's why we don't want to short cut any of the preparation. It's their last stand, we know what that can be like. The last two years, we've lost a game in this situation. Hopefully we can learn from that and find a way to close it out."

Milwaukee, meanwhile, would love nothing more than to extend its season by at least two more days. Game 5 would be Tuesday in Miami.

This is still a relatively young Bucks team with Larry Sanders in only his third season, Brandon Jennings his fourth and Ersan Ilyasova and Luc Mbah a Moute their fifth. It's Milwaukee's first playoff appearance in three years, and the experience, regardless of how long it lasts, will be invaluable.

"Everybody's getting something out of it," coach Jim Boylan said. "We're in the middle of it, but there's time you reflect, you look back, you watch the games and see certain things that happened and you can adjust and make a difference for your team. I'm sure that, at the end of this series - whenever this series is over - all our guys are going to look back and take something positive from it."

But they hope that won't be for a few more days.

"(Sunday) is going to be our fourth game and it could be our last game," Sanders said. "But hopefully guys don't want it to be our last game."

Notes: Bosh sat out some of Miami's full-court work with sore legs, but Spoelstra said everyone but Wade is "ready to go" for Game 4. ... The Bucks have no health issues, Boylan said. ... Sunday's game on ABC is a rare appearance on broadcast television for the Bucks. "With my rabbit ears on my TV, I can get this thing," Boylan cracked.

James leads Heat over Bucks and into next round

MILWAUKEE (AP) LeBron James can cross another item off his to-do list.

James scored 30 points, Ray Allen had another big game against his old team and the Miami Heat got their first playoff sweep in the Big Three era, advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals with an 88-77 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday.

"It was our next big step as far as our growth," James said. "It's so hard to win on the road in the playoffs, in someone's building - especially when someone is playing for their last life. It's a big step for us."

And now the Heat have some much-needed time to rest. Dwyane Wade sat out Sunday's game, only the second postseason game he's missed in his career, because of his aching right knee. But with Miami not playing until next Saturday, at the earliest, he'll have plenty of time to treat the three bone bruises that caused him to miss six games near the end of the regular season.

Miami plays the winner of the Brooklyn-Chicago series. The Bulls lead that series 3-1, with Game 5 on Monday night in New York.

"It's big," Wade said of the time off. "Obviously, we're one of the oldest teams in the league, maybe the oldest team in terms of rotation players. Guys have some bumps and bruises coming out of this series, so it's going to be great to get some rest. But also we have to take this time to continue to stay sharp, to continue to stay in shape as well."

Judging by the clinical way in which the Heat dissected the Bucks in this series, that isn't likely to be a problem.

The defending NBA champions won each game by double digits, getting contributions from their stars and subs alike. Allen finished with 16 points, the third time in the series he scored in double figures, and was 4 of 7 from 3-point range.

Udonis Haslem added 13 points and five rebounds, and Mario Chalmers kicked in eight rebounds and six assists for Miami, which never trailed Sunday.

"They had the whole package," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "When you can afford to sit guy like Dwyane Wade and perform at the level they performed at, that's a championship-caliber team."

Monta Ellis led the Bucks with 21 points, and Larry Sanders had 11 rebounds to go with seven points.

But Milwaukee got almost nothing again from Brandon Jennings, who didn't even play in the fourth quarter. Jennings, who had guaranteed the Bucks would win the series in six games, finished with three points on 1-of-7 shooting.

After scoring 26 points in Game 1, Jennings had 27 total in the final three.

"Frustrated, a little down because I came into this season with so much confidence," he said. "I thought we had a chance to steal a game in Game 1, Game 2. We let that slip away from us. Game 3, we came back home. Had a 10-point lead, lost that. I mean it's frustration all around."

The Heat had chances to sweep their first-round series in each of the last two seasons, taking 3-0 leads on Philadelphia (2011) and New York (2012). But they couldn't close it out, losing Game 4 each year.

That wasn't going to happen against the Bucks. Even with Wade reduced to a spectator.

Wade got treatment "around the clock" the last two days in hopes of playing Sunday, and he tested his knee before the game. But he and the Heat decided it wasn't worth risking aggravating the injury further, and he spent the entire game on the bench in his warmups.

"He gave me the nod saying he wasn't going to go, so I knew had to pick it up a little more and try to bring us home, bring this win home for us," James said.

That he did, adding eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals to his 30 points.

"We just space the floor and see if they can stop him. If not, he knows where we are," Allen said. "We just give him that room to operate."

The Heat led by as many as 11 in the first half, only to see the Bucks steadily chip away at the lead. When Mike Dunleavy drained a 3 and Ellis scored on a floater, it cut Miami's lead to 69-67 with 9:34 to play.

Ellis was fouled by Allen on the play, but he missed the free throw and James grabbed the rebound. He fed Allen, who knocked down - what else, a 3. J.J. Redick missed a long 3 and James found an open Chalmers for another 3 that gave the Heat a 75-67 lead with 8:27 left.

The 3 was Chalmers' 80th in the postseason, tying Tim Hardaway's franchise record.

After Luc Richard Mbah a Moute made the second of two free throws, James scored on a layup. Redick made a jumper, but Shane Battier and Allen closed out the Bucks with a pair of 3s. James then converted a three-point play and added a layup to complete the 19-5 run - a spurt in which he had a hand in every single Miami score.

"At some point during that stretch right there, he decided he was going to put his imprint on the game and he did. In a big way," Boylan said. "When you're a superstar player like he is, that's what superstar players do."

NOTES: The Heat have won eight straight postseason games dating to last season. That matches the franchise record. ... NBA Commissioner David Stern was in attendance. ... James scored 30 or more for the 54th time in the postseason, second only to Kobe Bryant among active players. ... Milwaukee had seven of its 16 turnovers in the first quarter. ... THE FACTS: No Dwyane Wade? No problem.

LeBron James scored 30 points and led a fourth-quarter pull-away as the Miami Heat swept the Milwaukee Bucks out of the playoffs with an 88-77 victory Sunday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

With the 4-0 sweep, the Heat advances to the second round of the NBA Playoffs to meet the winner of the Chicago-Brooklyn series.

James assisted on four huge 3-pointers and scored the other seven points in a 19-5 run in the fourth quarter after Milwaukee pulled within 69-67 on a basket by Monta Ellis.

Ellis led the Bucks with 21 points and eight assists, but backcourt mate Brandon Jennings had his third straight off game with just three points.

The Heat won despite the absence of Wade, who sat out because of a sore right knee.

Ray Allen added 16 points, including 4-of-7 shooting on 3-pointers.

QUOTABLE: "They made a run. From that point we were just able to execute. I was able to find Ray, find Shane (Battier). I was also able to find 'Rio' (Mario Chalmers), too, to put us up seven (actually eight) when they made their run. It's good to have the type of depth that we have where I can kind of draw two defenders and be able to find the shooters."

THE STAT: Since James joined the team, the Heat are now 30-7 in games where Dwyane Wade rests.

THE STAT II: Miami led from the first basket on. From the point where the Heat built an 11-point lead, 32-21, with 8:17 left in the second quarter, the Bucks managed to pull within a single shot (3 points or closer) 11 times but could never get back to even.

TURNING POINT: Milwaukee cut the deficit to 69-67 on a 3-pointer by Mike Dunleavy and a runner in the lane by Ellis with 9:34 left. Ellis also was fouled on the play but missed the free throws. From there, the Heat went on a 19-5 run to put the game away. James first found Allen on the left wing for a 3-pointer, then drew the defense and fed a wide-open Chalmers for a three that made it 75-67. James capped the run with a layup that made it 88-72 with 2:41 left.

QUOTABLE II: "We don't take it for granted. I don't know if we expect it. But great players make great plays, particularly when you need it most in clutch times. LeBron, Dwyane, Chris (Bosh), they've proven that over the course of their careers. But LeBron, probably more than anything, settled us. We ran virtually every part of our offense through him one way or another. Either he was handling (the ball), creating a trigger at the elbow, finding open guys."

HOT: James made 13-of-20 shots in another efficient effort. He shot 62.7 percent (37-of-59) in the series.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: James completed his line with eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews and NBA Commissioner David Stern were on hand.

GOOD MOVE: Miami's decision to rest Wade may or may not pay dividends down the road, but it was obvious the Heat could complete the sweep without putting the star guard's sore knee at risk.

BAD MOVE: In his last game before restricted free agency, Jennings posted just three points, one assist, no rebounds and two turnovers in 22 ½ minutes.

NOTABLE: The Heat completed a four-game sweep for the first time in the era of the Big Three of James, Wade and Bosh. ... After reaching a season-high five games over .500 at 24-19 on Jan. 29, the Bucks have gone just 14-29 since. ... Ellis was the only starter to score in double figures for the Bucks, whose starting frontcourt of Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, Ersan Ilyasova and Larry Sanders went a combined 8-for-29. ... Miami outrebounded Milwaukee by at least five in all four games of the series. ... Miami will meet the winner of the Chicago-Brooklyn series. Chicago leads that series, 3-1, with Game 5 scheduled for Monday in Brooklyn.
