Jazz-Grizzlies Preview

While they'll also need some help in order to make the playoffs, the Utah Jazz must beat the Memphis Grizzlies to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Unfortunately, wins haven't been easy to come by in Memphis.

The Jazz try to avoid a sixth loss in seven road matchups against the Grizzlies, who could possibly earn home-court advantage in a first-round series with a 14th home win in 15 tries Wednesday night.

After winning nine of 11, Utah (43-38) enters the last day of the regular season one game behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Jazz, who own the tiebreaker thanks to a better head-to-head record, will get in with a win Wednesday and a Lakers home loss to Houston.

"It comes down to one game now," Al Jefferson said. "It's a big game. The only thing we can worry about is what we can control, going out there and trying to take care of the game, and trying to win, and just leave the rest up to the Lakers, I guess."

The Lakers and Rockets are scheduled to start 2 1/2 hours after the Jazz and Grizzlies tip off.

"I guess I have to try and get in touch with Kevin McHale and tell him to handle it for me," said Jefferson, who played for the Rockets' coach when both were in Minnesota.

Winners of three straight on the road for the first time since a four-game run Dec. 18-29, 2010, the Jazz are coming off Monday's 96-80 victory at Minnesota. Jefferson, who three nights earlier posted a career high-tying 40 points and 13 rebounds in a 107-100 home win over the Timberwolves, had 22 and eight.

"Talk about this group of guys, man the character that they have, there was no quit in this group," coach Tyrone Corbin said. "The guys just continued to work."

The Jazz, though, could have a hard time keeping things going in Memphis, where they've dropped five of six, including a 103-94 loss during their last visit Nov. 5.

They've split their two meetings in Salt Lake City since, winning most recently 90-84 on March 16.

Memphis' Zach Randolph has given the Jazz problems this season, averaging 20.0 points - his second-highest against any opponent - and 14.3 rebounds.

The Grizzlies (55-26), who had won 13 straight at home before falling 91-87 to the Pacific Division-champion Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, haven't dropped back-to-back contests on their own court since March 13-16, 2012.

The loss to the Clippers was costly, as it allowed Los Angeles to pull into a tie with Memphis in the standings.

Locked in as the West's No. 5 seed, the Grizzlies, who own the same record as Clippers, would host a first-round series against Los Angeles with a win Wednesday and a Clippers loss at Sacramento. If both teams win, the Clippers get home court in the first round.

After Saturday's defeat, Memphis got back on track Monday in a 103-97 win at Dallas. Jerryd Bayless had a team-leading 19 points off the bench and Ed Davis added 11 and 11 boards for the Grizzlies, who trailed by as many as 14 points in the second quarter.

"I thought in the first half our guys didn't come out and compete. They were treating it like an exhibition game," Hollins said. "I'm excited about the attitude that we took in the second half and we finished the game, and was really pleased that the second unit was able to finish the game."

Grizzlies end Jazz playoff hopes with 86-70 win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Memphis' Zach Randolph helped end the postseason hopes of the Utah Jazz.

Randolph had 25 points and 19 rebounds and the Grizzlies defeated the Jazz 86-70 on Wednesday night, eliminating Utah and assuring the Los Angeles Lakers of a playoff spot even before their late game against the Houston Rockets.

Meanwhile, Memphis, the Western Conference's fifth seed, still held hopes for home-court advantage. But the Los Angeles Clippers' 112-108 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night means the series will open this weekend in Los Angeles.

The series will be a repeat of last year's Western Conference opening-round series won by the Clippers in seven games, despite Memphis holding home-court advantage.

Randolph looked like the player who made the All-Star team this season and led the Grizzlies to the second round of the playoffs two years ago.

He seemed quicker to the basket than in recent games and worked hard to get to the rim and on the boards.

"I just tried to be aggressive," said Randolph, who had averaged 12 points and 9.4 rebounds in the past five games.

"It's a new season, and I want to go in with confidence up and try to play the way I usually play.

"Tonight was a good night for me, and now I just need to carry on to a new season."

Mike Conley finished with 14 points for Memphis, which won its second straight and fifth in the past six. Darrell Arthur finished with 11 points for Memphis.

Al Jefferson scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Utah, the only Jazz player in double figures.

The Jazz managed only 32 percent shooting and were outrebounded 57-47 in a game they needed to win to capture the last Western Conference playoff spot.

A sporadic third quarter, where the Jazz were outscored 25-13 was Utah's undoing.

"It's disappointing anytime you don't make the playoffs," Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. "That was the goal we set at the beginning of the year. It's always disappointing when you don't go. We had an opportunity, but didn't get it done."

Randolph ended the third quarter with 12 points and seven rebounds as Memphis built the advantage to 16 before carrying a 65-51 lead into the fourth.

"The third quarter hurt us," Jefferson said. "I think we played good besides the third quarter. .We took a lot of great shots that we normally hit. It just didn't go in for us."

The Grizzlies built the lead to 20 in the early part of the fourth.

Utah made one more push, cutting into the Memphis advantage with eight straight points, part of a 12-2 Jazz run.

That reduced the Grizzlies' lead to 75-65 with just under 5 minutes left, but the Jazz never got closer.

"They slowed the ball up. They pounded it inside," Jazz forward Paul Millsap said of the Grizzlies. " ... It was tough for us to climb back up that hill. We just couldn't get over it."

The start of the game seemed to lack the intensity of two teams with playoff implications.

About 10 minutes in, the Jazz were shooting 25 percent, while Memphis was at 37 percent. The Grizzlies' starting front-line opened the game missing 10 of 13 shots.

The shooting eventually got a tad better, but both were under 41 percent at the half as the Grizzlies carried a 40-38 lead into the break.

Jefferson was the only player in double figures with 10 points, while Randolph led the Grizzlies with eight points and eight rebounds.

The defense picked up a bit in the third, but the Jazz's shooting woes continued as Utah missed its first six shots, en route to hitting only 3 of 14, while Memphis built the lead to double digits.

Utah finished the third hitting 4 of 18 shots and committing four turnovers.

It was Randolph who took control for Memphis, working inside and grabbing rebounds. Conley was providing a nice supporting role, taking the ball to the rim.

"(Randolph) was outstanding," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "He missed about five layups, but he went back and got them. I thought he was super aggressive.

"He looked like he was mentally into the game. He hasn't been the last few games, but he was (against the Jazz). I would say that he is in playoff mode."

NOTES: The home victory was Memphis' 32nd of the season, a franchise record. ... Randolph came up limping in the first half after twisting his right ankle, but played through it. The Grizzlies forward missed four games in March after rolling his left ankle. .The Jazz had a team dinner Tuesday night at a local Memphis restaurant. "It was a combination of the guys getting together, knowing and understanding that we're together, and want to stay together for a little while longer," in the postseason, Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said before the game. ... The Grizzlies announced earlier in the day that they have signed Donte Greene and Willie Reed. Both were inactive for the game. ... As sports teams have done across the country, there was a moment of silence before the game for the victims of Monday's bombings in Boston.

Notebook: Grizzlies 86, Jazz 70

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies capped their record-setting season with an 86-70 win over the Utah Jazz Wednesday night at FedExForum, giving them an improbable 56 wins. Afterwards, they awaited the outcome of the Los Angeles Clippers-Sacramento game to see whether or not they would have home court advantage in their first round playoff series against the Clippers. The Grizzlies need a Clippers loss to clinch home court. Meanwhile, the Jazz were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

QUOTABLE: "They've been a pain in our butts, but we've just got to go out there and worry about us, play hard, value every possession, play in and out basketball and stick to the things that got us to this point."

THE STAT: The Grizzlies' 56 wins set a franchise record, eclipsing the previous mark of 50. Along the way, the Grizzlies also set new team records for home win (32) and road wins (24), as well as winning percentage (.683).

TURNING POINT: Down by 20 early in the fourth quarter, the Jazz made a run that had them trailing by 10 with a chance to cut into that. But after Mo Williams misfired on a 3-pointer, the Grizzlies answered with a 3 by Jerryd Bayless that ended the Jazz run with 3:55 to go.

HOT: Zach Randolph finally returned to the form that got him named to the All-Star team earlier this season. After struggling for most of the second half of the season, Randolph appeared to be in playoff form as he score 25 points and hauled in 19 rebounds for his 45th double-double this season.

NOT: The game may have had a different outcome had the Jazz not taken advantage of their ability to get to the free throw. The Jazz misfired on nine free throws as they shot just 65.4 percent.

QUOTABLE II: "We are disappointed, of course, because we lost the game and didn't get a chance to make the postseason. But overall, the whole season, I think everybody should keep their heads up because we should be proud of ourselves. Many times this season we had the chance to tuck it in and give up, but we kept fighting to put ourselves in the position to get into the playoffs."

NOTABLE: Wednesday night's crowd of 16,777 at FedExForum gave the Grizzlies a season average of 16,625 with a total attendance figure of 681,612. That is the second-highest total attendance figure in team history and the best since their first season at FedExForum (2004-05). ... The Grizzlies showed why they lead the league in fewest points allowed, holding to Utah to 70 points on .321 shooting. ... The lone Utah player to reach double figures was center Jefferson. He had team highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds. ... The Grizzlies won the season series (3-1) against Utah for the first time since the 1005-06 season. ... The Grizzlies got a scare when Randolph came up limping after a rebound midway through the first quarter. But he played through it, eventually shaking it off. ... The Grizzlies can now turn their attention to the Clippers, who have had their number. Last season, they beat the Grizzlies in a seven-game first round series, that including coming back from being down by 27 points in the second half of Game 1 in Memphis. The Clippers also won the season series this year, 3-1, including last Saturday's 91-87 win at FedExForum.
