Warriors-Trail Blazers Preview

While Stephen Curry looks to set an NBA record and help the Golden State Warriors build some momentum heading into the playoffs, the Portland Trail Blazers hope to avoid ending a disappointing season tied for the longest losing streak in franchise history.

On the verge of setting the mark for most 3-pointers in a season, Curry also can help the visiting Warriors hand the Trail Blazers a 13th consecutive loss in Wednesday night's regular-season finale.

Golden State (46-35) is headed to the postseason for the first time since 2007 and Curry is a big reason why. The fourth-year guard ranks among the NBA leaders, averaging a career-high 23.0 points and shooting 45.5 percent from 3-point range. He needs two more made 3s to break the NBA single-season record of 269 set by Ray Allen with Seattle in 2005-06.

"If you actually do the math on it, it's pretty crazy of a number," Curry said. "It's nice to be close. It means you're healthy and playing in pretty much every game and shooting the ball pretty well."

After going 9 for 15 from beyond the arc and scoring 47 points in a 118-116 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, Curry finished with 35 while going 7 of 13 from 3 in Monday's 116-106 win over San Antonio.

"He's in an unbelievable groove right now, and we just want to keep him that way for the playoffs," said teammate David Lee, who added 12 points and 11 rebounds against the short-handed Spurs.

With his ankle issues of the past no longer a problem, Curry also is averaging a career-high 6.9 assists and his average of 3.5 made 3-pointers per game leads the NBA. He's totaled 61 points and gone 10 of 20 from 3-point range in two games against the Trail Blazers (33-48) this season - both wins.

Golden State, which can record its first season sweep of Portland since 2005-06, will get the Western Conference's sixth seed with a win or with a Houston loss at the Lakers. A loss, coupled with a Rockets' victory, however, drops the Warriors to seventh.

The Trail Blazers are one defeat away from matching the club-record 13-game losing streak from Feb. 12-March 4, 1972. Portland, which started four rookies in Tuesday's 93-77 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, has dropped the last 12 by an average of 14.5 points.

Rookie Will Barton had a team-high 17 on Tuesday for Portland, which shot 41.1 percent and struggled to run to keep up with the Clippers' up-tempo pace.

"It was tough, but we had to try and keep more composed than what we were, but we couldn't seem to do that," Portland rookie forward Joel Freeland said.

Plagued by injuries to starters LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews, Portland also will try to end a franchise-record seven-game home skid in which opponents have averaged 105.9 points on 50.9 percent shooting.

One bright spot for the Trail Blazers continues to be guard Damian Lillard, who leads all rookies averaging 19.0 points and already topped Curry's NBA's single-season record for made 3-pointers by a rookie (166 in 2009-10) with a franchise-best 183.

Lillard, who was held to 12 points Tuesday, has totaled 53 and shot 9-of-15 from 3 against the Warriors. The Oakland native scored 37 and made 7 of 12 3-pointers in a 103-97 loss at Golden State on Jan. 11.

Curry sets 3s mark; Warriors beat Blazers 99-88

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Stephen Curry couldn't wait to get his record out of the way.

Curry broke the NBA single-season mark for 3-pointers with 272 and the Golden State Warriors defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 99-88 on Wednesday in the regular season finale for both teams.

Curry surpassed Ray Allen's 3-point total of 269 set in 2005-06. Needing two for the record, Curry opened the game with two straight misses from beyond the arc, but hit his first midway through the first quarter before making the record-breaker with 6:49 to go in the second.

"I was nervous to be honest with you. I had butterflies," Curry said. "It was like the elephant in the room."

The feat accomplished, Curry was able to help the Warriors get the win and secure the sixth seed in the Western Conference.

Golden State will face the Nuggets in a first-round game Saturday in Denver.

"I was just so happy to get it out of the way so I could focus on the game," he said. "It's hard to do both, to be honest with you."

His backcourt teammate Klay Thompson led the Warriors (47-35) with 24 points.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 30 points and a season-high 21 rebounds for Portland (33-49), which lost its 13th straight game to equal the franchise record set in the 1971-72 season. It was the Blazers' eighth straight loss at home, a franchise record.

"We started out the season doing better that everyone thought. We kind of stalled there at the end with injuries and guys being out, but I thought throughout the whole year guys tried to get better and worked hard every day," Aldridge said after the Blazers thanked their fans in a postgame T-shirt giveaway. "The young guys came in and they tried to learn the game. That's all you can ask right now."

Golden State led by as many as 16 points in the first half but the Blazers closed the gap to 66-60 late in the third quarter on rookie Damian Lillard's layup. Sasha Pavlovic followed with a 3-pointer to pull Portland within 3.

Meyers Leonard hit a jumper to get the Blazers within 76-73 with 7:36 left in the game, but Thompson answered for the Warriors with a 3 and Portland couldn't get any closer.

Curry hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game with 5:56 to go, putting Golden State up 91-77. He finished with 15 points.

"That's a lot of 3s," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said about Curry's record. "Just unbelievable. An unbelievable season, and a great accomplishment for him."

The Warriors saw the return of center Andrew Bogut, who missed two games because of a bone bruise on his left ankle. Bogut has missed 42 games this season because of the ankle, which he had microfracture surgery on last April. Bogut finished with two points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes.

Portland was without starting forward Nicolas Batum, who missed the team's final eight games with a right shoulder injury, and shooting guard Wesley Matthews, who missed the last five games with a sprained right ankle.

"It's up to us to make sure that we erase this as soon as possible next year, Matthews said following the game.

The Warriors led by as many as eight points early, but the Blazers kept it close and pulled within 26-24 on Aldridge's jumper. Golden State answered with an 18-5 run to go up 44-29 on Thompson's 3-pointer.

The Warriors took a 50-36 lead into the half.

David Lee had 20 points and 10 rebounds for his league-leading 56th double-double, becoming the first Warrior to finish atop the league since Wilt Chamberlain had a double-double in all 80 games in the 1963-64 season.

Lillard finished with 21 points for the Blazers.

"They had something to play for, and we had something to prove," Lillard said. "They are a top team in the West and we wanted to come out and compete with them."

Notes: Blazers owner Paul Allen presented Damian Lillard his Rookie of the Month award for March. Lillard has won all five of the rookie awards this season. ... Allen met with reporters before the game on Wednesday night to assess the season. "It's painful to be on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs," Allen acknowledged, but noted that he is encouraged for the future by Portland's young talent. ... Chuck Charnquist, the Blazers' media room manager and team historian, worked his final game after 43 years with the team. ... ... Curry is donating three bed nets for every 3-pointer he makes this season to the Nothing But Nets campaign, which seeks to protect families in Africa from mosquitoes that carry malaria.

THE FACTS: Klay Thompson poured in 24 points and David Lee added 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Golden State Warriors beat the Portland Trail Blazers 99-88 Wednesday night at the Rose Garden to claim the sixth seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

Stephen Curry added 15 points and set the NBA single-season record for 3-pointers for the Warriors (47-35), who face a first-round matchup against No. 3 Denver. LaMarcus Aldridge collected 30 points and a season-high 21 rebounds for Portland (33-49) despite sitting for the entire fourth quarter. It was the 13th straight loss for the Trail Blazers, matching the franchise record set in 1971-72.

THE STAT: Curry entered the game trailing Ray Allen (Seattle, 2005-06) by one trey. Curry made 4-for-11 from beyond the arc and hiked his season total to 272, three more than Allen's previous mark.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors led only 76-73 when they went on a 10-2 run for an 86-75 lead with 5:20 remaining. The Blazers could get no closer than nine the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm disappointed in the season. I'm disappointed we lost tonight. I'm disappointed I couldn't play. I don't look at [the season as] rebuilding. I thought we had enough firepower to be playing on April 20."

HOT: Aldridge scored 14 of Portland's 17 first-quarter points and kept on rolling, scoring his 30 points in only 32 minutes.

NOT: Golden State is trying to work center Andrew Bogut back into form from an ankle injury, but the 7-footer couldn't find the range, making 1 of his 8 shots.

GOOD MOVE: Aldridge went inside often, pounding the ball at Lee in a matchup that has been fierce with plenty of give-and-take all season.

BAD MOVE: The Blazers' defense couldn't keep up with Golden State's firepower.

QUOTABLE III: "It's special. I grew up watching Ray Allen shoot in shooting drills when he played with my dad in Milwaukee. I have an appreciation for how well he shot the ball in his career, and especially that one season. My teammates helped me along the way, setting screens and running our offense. NOTABLE: Curry and Thompson built on their NBA single-season 3-point record, making nine Wednesday to finish at 483. ... Lillard averaged 19.1 points and 6.5 assists, joining Oscar Robertson, Allen Iverson and Damon Stoudamire as the only rookies in history average better than 19 points and six assists. Lillard played 3,167 minutes, becoming the first rookie to lead the category since Elvin Hayes in 1968-69. ... Aldridge finished with a career-high 38 double-doubles, combining with J.J. Hickson (40) for 78, the most by any two teammates in the NBA this season.
