It didn't take long for the Charlotte Bobcats to match last season's win total, but they never recovered from a lengthy losing streak.

Still, a late-season push could help them avoid the league's worst record.

Charlotte goes for a season high-tying third straight victory in Wednesday night's season finale against a visiting Cleveland Cavaliers team that could be playing its last game under coach Byron Scott.

With a 7-5 start under first-year coach Mike Dunlap, the Bobcats took a little more than three weeks to equal their victory total from a season ago when they finished 7-59 for the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history.

Charlotte (20-61), though, dropped its next 18 - eight fewer than Cleveland's league-record 26-game skid two seasons ago.

The Bobcats will miss the playoffs for a third consecutive season, but they have an opportunity to leapfrog Orlando and escape the NBA cellar. The teams are tied for the worst record, with the Magic closing at Miami on Wednesday.

"We want to take care of that," guard Gerald Henderson said after scoring a team-best 27 points in Monday's 106-95 victory over New York. "It's not been one of our goals to start the season, obviously, but it's become a smaller goal for us as we've come down the stretch."

Charlotte has been playing well at home over the last month, winning seven of nine following back-to-back victories over Milwaukee and the Knicks. The Bobcats won a season-best three straight overall Nov. 10-14.

The Cavaliers (24-57), meanwhile, arrive in Charlotte following a fifth straight defeat and 15th in 17 games, 96-95 to the Heat on Monday. It was a far better effort than Sunday's 91-77 loss at Philadelphia, but Scott still sounded like a defeated man.

"I'm fatigued, mentally, physically, a little bit of everything," he said. "But I still wake up every morning ready for work."

There's a chance Scott won't be doing that much longer for the Cavs, even though he's under contract for next season, which would be his fourth with the team.

"I am going to be back to coach them," he said. "I've got a year left on my contract, so unless I'm told different, I expect to do that."

Expectations were high on Kyrie Irving, last season's Rookie of the Year, but the Cavs' injury-plagued point guard has played just 58 games and been inconsistent at times. Of his past nine games, he's scored at least 27 points four times but averaged 11.2 in the other five.

Irving has keyed Cleveland winning both meetings with Charlotte this season, scoring 33 in a 106-104 victory at Charlotte on Jan. 4 and finishing with 22 in a 122-95 home win Feb. 6. That was the Cavs' sixth straight win in the series and most lopsided since LeBron James left for Miami.

Walker's 24 points lift Bobcats over Cavs 105-98

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) The Charlotte Bobcats did not finish with the NBA's worst record.

Sure, it's not the same as winning an NBA championship, but for the Bobcats it's a step in the right direction after finishing last season 7-59.

The Bobcats defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-98 Wednesday night to match a season-high three-game win streak and finish 21-61, a game ahead of the Orlando Magic.

The Magic lost their season finale to the Miami Heat.

"You never want to be dead last, so I'm happy about that," Charlotte first-year head coach Mike Dunlap said.

The Bobcats entered Wednesday night tied with Orlando for the worst record in the league, but Kemba Walker had 24 points and seven assists and Josh McRoberts added 20 points and eight rebounds.

Dunlap said he never expected a miraculous turnaround after inheriting a team that finished with the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history.

Still, the Bobcats became the first team to triple their win total from the previous season.

That progress, along with the fact the Bobcats will get another high draft pick and have as much as $21 million to spend under the salary cap, leaves Dunlap excited about the team's future.

"I'm proud of the fact that we put the first brick down in the house and there's an uptick," Dunlap said. "But what I'm happier about is the feel all the way through the building. People can spend the summer and say we got better and our young guys got better."

Said Walker: "My excitement comes knowing that we finished off strong."

The Cavaliers can't say the same thing.

Kyrie Irving had 24 points and 10 assists for the Cavaliers, who finished with the third-worst record in the league (24-58) after losing 16 of their last 18 games, including their six straight to close the season.

Cavaliers coach Byron Scott's future with the team remains uncertain.

The Cavs are just 64-166 in three seasons under Scott following the departure of LeBron James.

Scott said the season has been "frustrating" because the Cavaliers "haven't had our full complement of players. It is still a growing process. I think our guys are still getting better and next year I hope that we'll be healthy."

As for his future, Scott said earlier in the day, "Yeah, I have a year on my contract, (so) unless they tell me otherwise I plan on being back."

By finishing last in the league the Magic have the best chance - 25 percent - to land the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NBA lottery.

The Bobcats jumped all over the Cavaliers early, taking a 34-16 lead after shooting 72 percent from the field in the first quarter.

The Bobcats appeared ready to blow out the Cavaliers after extending the lead to 24 in the second quarter, but Irving brought Cleveland back.

Irving scored 16 points in the first half on 6-of-9 shooting and the Cavaliers finished the half on an 18-5 run to cut the Charlotte lead to six heading into the break.

Cleveland took the lead with 9:30 left in the game when Dion Waiters scored on a driving layup for its only lead of the game at 77-76.

But Walker hit a long 3-pointer and Bismack Biyombo scored inside to ignite a 7-0 run giving the Bobcats a lead they'd never relinquish. Walker sealed the game with a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to put the Bobcats up by five.

"You take away the positives and negatives and what you need to work on for next season," Irving said. "We'll come back collectively in September and come back a better ballclub. That's the main goal. (but) we're not going to win a lot of games if we continue to be the last place team in defensive field goal percentage."

NOTES: McRoberts was a solid acquisition since being acquired from Orlando, entering the game averaging 10.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in his previous 18 starts. ... Gerald Henderson scored in double digits in his final 24 games this season. ... Omri Casspi had a season-high nine rebounds.

THE FACTS: In a matchup of young point guards, Kemba Walker scored a game-high 24 points as the Charlotte Bobcats held off the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-98 at Time Warner Cable Arena in the season finale for both teams. The Bobcats finish the season at 21-61 tripling their win total from a year ago. Kyrie Irving scored 24 points for the Cavaliers who finish the season 24-58

THE STAT: The Bobcats had 86 assists over the last three games on 117 made field goals. Walker had 23 of those assists which was almost two more assists per game than his season average. As a unit during the team's three-game win streak the Bobcats averaged 9.5 assists more than their season average of 19.2

TURNING POINT: The Bobcats used a 7-0 run to take away the Cleveland momentum early in the fourth quarter. The Cavs took their only lead at 77-76 on a Dion Waiters driving lay-up. That erased what had been a 24-point Bobcats advantage. Charlotte wouldn't let the lead slip away for long. Walker drained a three followed by a Bismack Biyombo dunk. The Bobcats closed out the defining 7-0 run with a Gerald Henderson put-back dunk for a six-point cushion.

HOT: The Bobcats were a team on fire in the first quarter tonight. Charlotte made 13 of its 18 shots for a 72.2 percent clip en route to a 34-point first quarter. Josh McRoberts led the way in the opening quarter going a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Walker had a solid stat line for the Bobcats to close out the season. Walker had 24 points and seven assists both of which were team bests. He added four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. He finished the season as the team leader in scoring, assists and steals.

GOOD MOVE: The only good move for Cleveland in this game actually came from another game. The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Utah Jazz, which means the Los Angeles Lakers will make the playoffs and the Cavaliers will swap the Miami Heat's No. 1 pick with the Lakers' which could be a jump of 14 or 15 spots in this June's draft.

ROOKIE WATCH: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist finished his rookie campaign with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Jeffery Taylor finished with six points and five rebounds. For Cleveland, Waiters closed his rookie year with 16 points while Tyler Zeller had six points and two rebounds and Kevin Jones had two points and three rebounds. Both Kidd-Gilchrist and Waiters should receive consideration for all-rookie honors when postseason awards are announced later this year.

NOTABLE: Walker has played in all 148 games in his first two seasons as a Bobcat. Charlotte is the first team in league history to triple its win total from the previous season. The Bobcats went 8-2 in their last 10 home game and averaged 100.4 points per game in that stretch. Josh McRoberts had a career-high-tying 20 points. Biyombo set the franchise record for most multi-block games with 44 eclipsing Emeka Okafor's record of 43 games in 2008-09. Irving had his fourth double-double of the season with 24 points and 10 assists. Alonzo Gee scored in double figures for the 45th time this season. Omri Casspi grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. The Cavaliers finish 24-58 and clinch the third worst record in the NBA which guarantees them no worse than the sixth pick. They are 64-166 in three years under coach Byron Scott. Cleveland ends the season losing 16 of 18 and its final six games.
