Knicks-Bobcats Preview

With the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed wrapped up, the New York Knicks have nothing of consequence to accomplish until the postseason.

They may be treating Monday's visit to Charlotte like it's the preseason.

Carmelo Anthony is expected to rest, and he won't be the only Knick getting a breather as New York looks for a sixth straight win over the league-worst Bobcats.

The Knicks (53-27) clinched the East's second spot Sunday with a win over the team right behind them, forcing 26 turnovers and beating Indiana 90-80 to set up a playoff series with seventh-seeded Boston.

With its first-round fate determined, New York - still without big men Tyson Chandler, Kenyon Martin, Amare Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace and Marcus Camby - is ready to get some rest.

"I always said today was a real important game for us to come in and lock down (the No. 2 seed)," said Anthony, who had a game-high 25 points but didn't play in the fourth quarter after bruising his left shoulder in the third. "It was a big game for us so now guys can get their rest, I can get my rest and come back full speed ready for the playoffs."

Anthony almost certainly won't play Monday and could also sit out Wednesday's home finale against Atlanta, and not taking the court again would essentially give him the scoring title. He's averaging 28.656 points while Kevin Durant is at 28.137.

Assuming Durant plays the final two games and Anthony sits, Oklahoma City's star would need to total 99 points against Sacramento and Milwaukee to win his fourth straight scoring title.

With nearly every big man on the roster ailing, the Knicks started recently signed Solomon Jones at center on Sunday after starting Chris Copeland the previous two games. Martin and Chandler won't travel to Charlotte and Camby also likely won't play, but Wallace could return to get some minutes either Monday or Wednesday.

"We gotta get some healthy bodies back. And then we'll have Thursday and Friday to prepare for the playoffs," coach Mike Woodson said. "As coaches, we'll start our preparation when we get back from Charlotte and once we get some healthy bodies back on Thursday, we'll start practicing and see where we are and who can be in the rotation once we start the playoffs."

Charlotte (19-61) certainly won't mind seeing a Knicks team that's less-than-invested in Monday's contest. The Bobcats have lost the series' last five games by an average of 13.6 points, and trailed by as many as 30 at Madison Square Garden on March 29 in a 111-102 loss.

The Bobcats have lost 14 straight and 21 of 22 on the road, but they're playing well at home toward season's end. Charlotte beat Milwaukee 95-85 on Saturday for its sixth win in eight games at Time Warner Cable Arena.

"It's been a tough season for all of us in this locker room," said center Bismack Biyombo, who had 13 points and 17 rebounds. "We come in every day and we work hard. The season isn't going as expected, but over time things are getting better. It's a long way to go. But we're young and we have a bright future ahead of us here."

Perhaps Biyombo and Josh McRoberts can take advantage of the Knicks' interior absences. McRoberts had 18 points, nine assists and nine boards Saturday.

Guard Gerald Henderson tied a career high with 35 points in last month's trip to New York.

Henderson, Walker lead Bobcats over Knicks 106-95

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) The Charlotte Bobcats have a chance to shed the label of NBA's worst team heading into the offseason.

The Bobcats enter the season finale Wednesday night tied with Orlando for the worst record in the NBA at 20-61. Both teams have one game left - the Bobcats host Cleveland, while the Magic visit Miami.

"We want to take care of that," Bobcats guard Gerald Henderson said. "It's not been one of our goals to start the season, obviously, but it's become a smaller goal for us as we've come down the stretch."

The Bobcats finished an NBA-worst 7-59 last season, but have a chance to triple that win total and overtake the Magic in the win column if they beat the Cavs.

The Bobcats moved into a tie with the Magic on Monday night as Henderson scored 27 points and Kemba Walker had 23 points and a career-high 13 assists to defeat a New York Knicks team playing without Carmelo Anthony and several others 106-95.

"We got up and down and had good tempo and got a win," Walker said. "I think our chemistry has gotten a lot better over the course of the season. And guys are making shots."

Granted, it was a hollow victory of sorts given the Knicks only played seven guys. Coach Mike Woodson didn't play Anthony, Tyson Chandler, J.R. Smith, Raymond Felton, Amar'e Stoudemire, Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin.

But it hardly mattered for the Bobcats in a season where victories have been rare and winning streaks even scarcer.

"We'll take it," Henderson said.

If the Bobcats beat the Cavaliers, they'll close the season with three straight wins, matching their longest streak of the season.

The Bobcats left no doubt about the outcome Monday night.

Walker and Henderson combined to shoot 20 of 31 from the field and go 7 of 7 from the foul line. The Bobcats shot 64 percent in the first three quarters to build a 17-point lead and outrebounded the Knicks 37-25.

"Usually we have a lull in the third quarter, but we were very consistent there, so that was good," Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap said.

Center Bismack Biyombo added 10 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

Chris Copeland led the Knicks with 32 points, shooting 4 of 8 from 3-point range.

The Knicks started a lineup that included Copeland, Iman Shumpert, James White, Steve Novak and Pablo Prigioni. The Bobcats jumped on that crew early, building 30-17 first quarter lead while outrebounding the Knicks 12-4.

Charlotte shot 63 percent from the field in the first half and took a 54-45 lead into the locker room.

Walker essentially had his way with Prigioni early in the game nearly posting a double-double in the first half with 13 rebounds and eight assists, while Henderson scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field.

With the game well in hand, Walker only played 31 minutes.

Jason Kidd and Rasheed Wallace were the only Knicks to see action off the bench.

Wallace played his first game since Dec. 13 because of a sore left foot, but only played four minutes and scored two points. Wallace asked Woodson to take him out of the game, saying the foot was still sore.

"We'll evaluate him tomorrow morning to see how he feels and gauge it that way," Woodson said. "He tried it and I thought he looked pretty good in the short minutes he was out there, but we'll know more tomorrow. I'm not saying it's a setback, but it's a little sore."

Woodson said his team never got into a flow on defense.

"That was kind of disappointing," Woodson said. "Offensively, we scored enough points. We just couldn't get stops. They kind of had their way offensively tonight. So it's a game that the guys we started got an opportunity to play a lot of minutes to get ready for the Atlanta game on Wednesday and then the Boston series."

Josh McRoberts, who'll be a free agent after the season, continues to play solid basketball for the Bobcats, scoring 10 points, while handing out eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds.

The Bobcats have played much better as a team since acquiring McRoberts in a trade with the Magic for Hakim Warrick.

NOTES: NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said if the Bobcats decided to change their name to the Hornets after the season the process would take at least 18 months. The Bobcats have not applied for a name change. ... The two teams combined to shoot 26 of 27 from the foul line. ... Hip-hop artist Nelly was in attendance in the front row.

THE FACTS: The New York Knicks used what amounted to a glorified summer league roster Monday night and it showed as they lost 106-95 in a meaningless game to the league's worst team, the Charlotte Bobcats, at Time Warner Cable Arena. Charlotte, which led by as many as 23 points, was led by Gerald Henderson with 27 points. The Knicks were paced by Chris Copeland's career and game-high 32 points.

QUOTABLE: "They played hard. I can't take away anything from our group. Charlotte was just a better team out there tonight. Our guys competed. We never really got in the flow and that was kind of disappointing. We just couldn't get stops and they had their way offensively."

THE STAT: 7. The number of players used by Woodson. All five starters logged at least 41 minutes of action with Copeland playing 46:50 out of a possible 48 minutes. New York was resting many of its regulars, but indicated that the full roster might be available Wednesday night against Atlanta in the team's regular season finale.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks had the ball and some momentum on a 15-9 run, but they weren't able to get off a shot as the half came to an end and they trailed by nine. With a non-existent bench, the Bobcats struck early with four straight points from Gerald Henderson and quickly opened up a double-digit lead which the Knicks could never recover from.

QUOTABLE II: "It's been a long season. We wanted to get out there and play as a team and show our fans how we can play. I thought we played well as a team. We got up and down and pushed the tempo and we came out with a good win."

HOT: Henderson has finished the season on a high note for the Bobcats. The Charlotte guard had a team-best 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting and added five assists and three rebounds. Henderson is averaging 17.6 points this month and scored 20-plus points for the tenth time in 20 games.

NOT: New York started the game slowly and were never able to recover. The Knicks show 6-of-20 from the floor for a dismal 30 percent and trailed the Bobcats by 13 as the first quarter came to a close.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Walker had 23 points and a career-high 13 assists in Charlotte's win. Walker added a steal which made him the franchise record holder for steals in a season, passing Brevin Knight. Walker committed just one turnover on the night and was also 9-of-15 from the floor. He's now scored 20 or more for three straight games.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Nelly, hip-hop star and part-owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, was seated courtside as part of a team promotion where a lucky fan got to sit with him. Michael Jordan hosted NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver and Ahmad Rashad.

GOOD MOVE: Woodson chose to sit a majority of the players who will be used in the team's upcoming playoff run. It cost them in the short term Monday night, but will hopefully pay off as the spring progresses.

BAD MOVE: Rasheed Wallace, who returned to the court for the first time since December 13, played just 3:50 before leaving with foot pain. Woodson said the team would monitor the foot pain and proceed as needed with consultation from the team's medical staff. Wallace had surgery in December on the left foot, but it is not currently being viewed as a "setback." Wallace scored on his first shot attempt and finished with two points.

ROOKIE WATCH: Copeland put on an All-Star like performance Monday in Charlotte. The Colorado-product scored a career-best 32 points while grabbing seven rebounds. He made 12-of-25 field goals including four three-pointers. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds for Charlotte while fellow rookie Jeffery Taylor netted 12 points and dished out three assists.

NOTABLE: The Bobcats recorded season highs in field goal percentage at 58.1 percent (43-of-74), free-throw percentage at 92.9 percent (13-of-14) and assists with 35. Bismack Biyombo recorded his third double-double in the last five games with a 10-point, 11-rebound performance. Josh McRoberts was in double figures for the third straight game and 10th time since joining the Bobcats. New York finished with just three offensive rebounds. The Knicks finished the season with a road record of 24-17 which is their best road record in 16 years. James White recorded career highs of seven rebounds, six assists and 43 minutes, adding a season-high 15 points. Steve Novak had a season-high seven rebounds.
