Grizzlies-Mavericks Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies took a big step back in their quest for home-court advantage in a first-round playoff series with a disappointing defeat their last time out.

Getting back on track could prove difficult against the Dallas Mavericks, who are still playing hard despite being eliminated from contention.

The Grizzlies try to pick up a rare road win over the Mavericks as these Southwest Division rivals square off Monday night.

Having long since clinched its third straight playoff berth, Memphis' chances of hosting a first-round series took a turn for the worse Saturday in a 91-87 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference, the Grizzlies (54-26) own the same record as the Pacific-champion Clippers and are one game behind third-place Denver. All three teams are fighting for home-court advantage, but Memphis is on the wrong side of both tiebreakers.

"It's real frustrating because we needed this game," Zach Randolph said after posting 16 points and 12 rebounds. "But it is what it is. The real season starts next week, and we got to be ready whoever it may be. We just got to have our confidence to go in there whoever's here and be ready."

The Grizzlies, who had won seven of their previous eight, can't be feeling good about visiting the Mavericks. Memphis is 6-30 all-time in Dallas, which includes two playoff defeats, and the last two losses have been by an average of 15.5 points.

While Dallas will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2000, coach Rick Carlisle's team is finishing strong. Winners in four of five, the Mavericks (40-40) got back to .500 for the first time since they were 11-11 on Dec. 12 with Sunday's 107-89 victory at New Orleans.

"I thought we played some good basketball the last couple weeks. We won some close games, we actually made it interesting towards the playoffs, so I'm happy with the way we've fought," said Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 19 points to surpass 25,000 for his career.

"Even now, we're playing really for nothing, but it means something for us to be a winning team and hopefully we can finish with a winning season."

Nowitzki became just the 17th player in NBA history to reach the 25,000-point plateau, and he figures to receive a booming ovation when the Mavericks return home Monday.

"It's been a crazy ride, it's a big milestone," he said. "I would have loved obviously to do it at home in front of our home fans, home fans that meant so much to me over the 15 years in the league. ... I'm glad I got it over with and we got the win."

Shawn Marion continued his impressive play with 21 points Sunday. He's averaging 20.6 - 8.5 more than his season mark - on 59.7 percent shooting during Dallas' 4-1 run.

O.J. Mayo, though, has struggled lately. Second on the team with 15.6 points per game, Mayo has averaged 9.0 on 34.8 percent shooting over the last nine.

Mayo, who spent the previous four seasons with Memphis before signing with Dallas, has been limited to an average of 10.7 points in three matchups against his former team.

Memphis' Mike Conley, who is second on his team in scoring at 14.7, is shooting 21.4 percent and averaging 7.0 points - his worst against any opponent - in three games against Dallas this season. He has scored 12 in each of his last two games on a combined 32.0 percent shooting after averaging 21.8 points on 59.5 percent shooting in the month's first five games.

Dallas won 104-83 at home Jan. 12 but dropped two road matchups against the Grizzlies, who have taken six of eight in the series overall.

Grizzlies rally for 103-97 win over Mavericks

DALLAS (AP) - Thanks to Keyon Dooling and the rest of the Memphis bench, the Grizzlies still have a chance to stay home after their regular-season finale to start the playoffs.

Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks can only hope to break even.

Dooling hit the go-ahead 3-pointer before Ed Davis made consecutive baskets, and reserves accounted for all 35 points the Grizzlies scored in the fourth quarter while rallying for a 103-97 victory Monday night to keep alive their chance of hosting a first-round playoff series.

"Our intensity, our energy, our effort was revved up. Coach really challenged us at halftime to run harder and play with more force," said Dooling, on his seventh team in a 13-year NBA career. "The bench, we were trying to find some continuity, find out how we can play with each other. We did a good job in all those categories."

Dooling, who had scored a combined 12 points in his five games since signing as a free agent April 3, hit a 3-pointer with 8:02 left for an 80-78 lead. There was also a loose-ball foul on the play, and Quincy Pondexter made the free throw. Davis then hit a pair of baskets after Dallas turnovers, stretching the lead to 85-78 - and the Mavs never got closer than five after that.

Jerryd Bayless had 19 points and Memphis' reserves accounted for 64 points. Davis had 11 points and 11 rebounds. The only Memphis starter scoring in double figures was Tayshaun Prince with 12.

"I thought in the first half our guys didn't come out and compete. They were treating it like an exhibition game," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "I'm excited about the attitude that we took in the second half and we finished the game, and was really pleased that the second unit was able to finish the game."

To have home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, the Grizzlies (55-26) need the Pacific Division champion Los Angeles Clippers to lose one of their remaining two games. Memphis then has to win its regular-season finale at home Wednesday against Utah.

A clean-shaven Dirk Nowitzki had 26 points and Vince Carter 22 for the Mavs, who had finally reached .500 for the first time since Dec. 12 with a win at New Orleans on Sunday night. They had vowed not to shave until reaching .500 - though it lasted only one night.

The Mavericks (40-41), NBA champions only two years ago, already knew they were going to miss the playoffs for the first time in 13 seasons. Now they have to win their season finale Wednesday night at home against the Hornets to avoid their first losing record since going 40-42 in 1999-2000, the end of a miserable decade without a winning season.

There was a moment of silence before the game for those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings. There were no noticeable changes in security at the American Airlines Center, though police officers assigned to the game were doing more patrols outside the building.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle began his playing career in Boston. He was picked in the third round of the 1984 draft by the Celtics and was part of their 1986 NBA championship.

"Sickening. Tragic. That's about all I can think of right now," Carlisle said about the bombings before the game. "They used to run right by my place. ... It's great. Every year, it's a big deal."

Dallas, which had a 14-point lead before halftime, was ahead 80-78 on Nowitzki's three-point play, which came just more than 2 minutes after his four-point play to tie the game at 73-all.

After Pondexter's free throw, O.J. Mayo missed two shots in 44 seconds. The teams traded turnovers and Davis made a layup between those misses before Mayo had a defensive rebound, only to have the ball stolen by Bayless. That led to a fast-break jumper by Davis, who was fouled by Mayo and made the free throw.

Mayo, who spent the first four seasons of his career with Memphis before his deal last summer that includes a player option for next season, was 1-of-6 shooting with four turnovers.

"He just had a bad night; I guess I will write it off to that. But I will tell you what, if I was playing against my former team, I'd come out ready to go at them. But that's just me," Carlisle said. "He didn't compete tonight. ... In the biggest game of the year, an opportunity to be a winning team, for him to show up like he did tonight I was shocked."

Memphis went on a 19-4 run into the third quarter after Chris Kaman's short fadeaway jumper put Dallas up 46-32 with 4:08 left in the first half. The Grizzlies didn't lead until Tony Allen's 3-pointer with 7:12 left that made it 51-50, the first of 11 lead changes the rest of that quarter.

NOTES: Nowitzki was recognized before the game for his 25,000th career point, reached Sunday. ... Carter passed Clyde Drexler for 27th on the NBA career scoring list with his five points in the first quarter. That gave him 22,197, two more than Drexler before adding more. ... Kaman was still sporting a full beard. "It's a beard for me. ... I was already growing it," Kaman said.

THE FACTS: Led by reserves Jerryd Bayless, Keyon Dooling and Ed Davis, the Memphis Grizzlies outworked the Dallas Mavericks in the second half and earned a 103-97 victory Monday at the American Airlines Center. The win kept Memphis (55-26) in the hunt for homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs and also snapped a streak of 12 straight winning seasons by Dallas (40-41).

After trailing for the entire first half by as many as 14 points, Memphis turned up the defensive pressure after intermission. The Grizzlies scored 19 points off 11 turnovers and outrebounded Dallas by 12 in the second half. Bayless finished with 19 points, four assists, four rebounds and four steals. Dooling added 13 points and Davis had a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, including seven on the offensive glass. Tayshaun Prince was the only starter in double figures with 12 points.

Dirk Nowitzki scored a game-high 26 points, Vince Carter added 22 off the Dallas bench and Mike James had 14 points.

THE STAT: The Grizzlies scored a season-best 64 bench points, smashing the previous high of 50 points set in a 113-81 win at Sacramento on Jan. 7.

TURNING POINT: The Grizzlies took command with a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter, starting with a 3-pointer by Dooling with 8:18 remaining and ending with a three-point play by Davis that made it 86-79 with 6:41 left.

HOT: Dooling and Carter were both 4-for-5 from 3-point distance.

NOT: Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo had another tough night against his old team, finishing with just two points on 1-for-6 shooting (0-for-4 from downtown) and a team-high four turnovers. In four games this season against Memphis, he averaged 8.0 points on 35.1 percent shooting (13-for-37) with 15 turnovers and 11 assists.
