Nuggets-Bucks Preview

The Denver Nuggets can clinch home-court advantage for a first-round playoff series with one more win.

The team is hopeful Kenneth Faried will be ready to go come the postseason.

One day after losing their leading rebounder to injury, the banged-up Nuggets try to regroup Monday night when they visit the Milwaukee Bucks.

Faried's ankle buckled when he went in for a layup less than three minutes into Sunday's 118-109 win over Portland. Although X-rays were negative, George Karl stressed that he didn't want to guess about Faried's availability for the playoffs until after Monday's MRI.

The Nuggets (55-25) tweeted this quote from Faried two hours after the game: "Extremely scared. I never felt a pain like that a day in my life." He also said he'd be ready for the playoffs: "I know I will be out there. If I can walk, I can play."

The loss of Faried, who averages 11.5 points and 9.2 rebounds, would be a big loss for Denver, which is just getting over Danilo Gallinari's ACL injury.

"We're dropping like flies, man," said Ty Lawson, who averages a team-high 16.6 points. "Well, it's not too serious, I heard, so he might be out for a week or so. He's a tough guy."

One bright spot for the Nuggets is Lawson (right heel) returned to the starting lineup for the first time since March 27, and finished with 12 points and 10 assists in an encouraging 31 minutes.

"I pushed off it actually going to the basket a couple of times," he said of the heel. "So I think I'm confident and just probably one or two more games I'll be back to regular."

Andre Iguodala led the way Sunday with 28 points and rookie Evan Fournier and had a season-best 24 in his second start as the Nuggets set an NBA franchise record with their 55th win.

"It's been a really good year for us," said Iguodala, who is averaging 19.0 points, 9.8 assists and 8.0 rebounds in his last four games. "But we don't want to get satisfied. We've still got work to do. We can't just settle for 55. We've got to try to get to 57."

Especially with a chance to lock up the Western Conference's third seed.

The Nuggets have a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis for third place, and own the tiebreaker over each team. Home court would be a significant advantage to Denver, which has a franchise-best 22-game home winning streak and is an NBA-best 37-3 at home.

The Nuggets beat the Bucks 112-104 at home Feb. 4 for their fifth straight win in the series. Iguodala, Lawson and Corey Brewer each reached the 20-point mark, while 11-year veteran Samuel Dalembert scored a career-best 35 for Milwaukee.

The Bucks (37-43) are headed to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, but little suggests they'll be able to get out of the first round. They're stumbling down the stretch with 11 losses in 14 games and will face top-seeded Miami in the playoffs.

A discouraging 95-85 defeat to East-worst Charlotte on Saturday - their fourth in a row - also did little to boost their confidence.

If there's any bit of good news for the Bucks, it's they hope to get Larry Sanders and Brandon Jennings back for the postseason.

"We'll try to keep our guys fresh and keep them playing enough that they're feeling in a rhythm and ready to compete," coach Jim Boylan said. "I don't want to sit them out completely, but at the same time we want to be cautious."

J.J. Redick had 12 points and was 2 of 11 from 3-point range Saturday. He has totaled 38 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the perimeter in two games versus Denver this season.

Nuggets top Bucks 112-111, get homecourt in Rd 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) The NBA's best home team will certainly have an advantage in the playoffs.

In the first round, at least.

Ty Lawson scored 26 points, including a jumper in the lane with 9.3 seconds left, and the Denver Nuggets clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs with a 112-111 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night.

Wilson Chandler added 21 points for the Nuggets, who are 37-3 at home and have a 22-game winning streak at home. They can secure the No. 3 seed in the West with one more victory or two losses by the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I think it's huge," Denver coach George Karl said. "Don't get me wrong. The teams we're going to play in the first round are capable of beating us on our home court. I've always felt that home court, if it was an even series, it's tough for teams to win twice on your home court. And our home court, I know teams don't like to play there. Hopefully mentally they struggle with the thought of playing there."

Milwaukee lost its season-high fifth game in a row despite Monta Ellis scoring 38 points, one shy of his season high. His six 3-pointers were the most he's had this season, and he didn't even attend the morning shootaround because he was sick.

"Now is not the time to throw a pity party," Ellis said.

Ellis' four-point play with 14.2 seconds left gave the Bucks a 111-110 lead. Ellis, who had 19 fourth-quarter points, drilled a 3-pointer from the right side and made a free throw after he was fouled by Evan Fournier.

"He's been a warrior for us all year," Milwaukee coach Jim Boylan said. "He's played hurt, sick, he's done everything. . I can't say enough about him, he's had a great season. Without him I don't know where we would be."

After a timeout, Lawson got the ball in front of Milwaukee's bench with Ellis guarding him. Lawson drove to his right and pulled up in the lane to hit the winning shot.

"I just wanted to (isolate)," Lawson said. "I passed to Wilson, got it back, saw a clean side, started pushing real hard and I knew he was trying to bite and make sure I didn't get to the basket. So I kind of stepped back and had all the time in the world to knock down a shot."

J.J. Reddick, who contributed 20 points for the Bucks, missed a 3-pointer from the center of the arc as time expired.

Milwaukee, which already had clinched the No. 8 spot in the East, finished with a 21-20 record at home.

"We were one defensive stop short," Ellis said. "J.J. had a great look at it."

Forward Kenneth Faried did not play because of the left ankle he sprained in Denver's victory over Portland on Sunday.

That didn't stop the Nuggets (56-25), who added to their franchise record for victories in a season by winning for the 22nd time in their last 25 games.

JaVale McGee came off the bench and finished with a season-high 17 rebounds and 10 points for Denver, which closes the regular season Wednesday when it hosts Phoenix.

Milwaukee is closing the regular season with no momentum at all. The team has just three victories in its last 15 games and will try to halt a nine-game road losing streak Wednesday at Oklahoma City.

"It'd be nice for us to taste a victory," Boylan said.

John Henson had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Bucks, who lost their fifth straight game to Denver.

Milwaukee held a one-point lead with about 1 minute left when Ersan Ilyasova grabbed a rebound off a missed shot by Andre Miller, but he lost the ball out of bounds.

Denver capitalized with a basket by Andre Iguodala for a 108-107 lead with 52 seconds remaining.

Mike Dunleavy missed a shot and Miller's two free throws gave the Nuggets a 110-107 lead with 25.4 seconds left.

Earlier in the quarter, Denver held a 98-92 lead when Ellis scored eight points in a row. He drilled a 3-pointer, a jump shot and then another 3-pointer to give Milwaukee a 100-98 lead with 4:30 to go.

A slam dunk along the baseline by Ekpe Udoh with 9:20 left gave Milwaukee an 87-86 lead, its first since early in the first quarter.

NOTES: Milwaukee gave up a season-high 46 free-throw attempts; Denver made 32 of them. . Ellis recorded his ninth 30-point game of the season. . The Nuggets finished with a 19-22 mark on the road. . An MRI exam Monday morning showed that Faried sprained a ligament. Faried, who averages 11.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, also will miss the final game of the regular season and will be listed as day-to-day for the playoffs. . Center Larry Sanders missed his third game in a row for the Bucks with a sore lower back.

THE FACTS: Ty Lawson scored on a short jumper in the lane with 9.3 seconds left to cap a 26-point performance and lift the Denver Nuggets to a 112-111 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Monday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

With the victory, the Nuggets (56-25) clinched home-court advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

Monta Ellis' four-point play with 14.2 seconds left had given the Bucks (37-44) a 111-110 lead and capped a 19-point quarter for Ellis, who led all scorers with 38 points.

But after a timeout, Lawson took a handoff from Wilson Chandler and drove into the lane. With Ellis giving ground, Chandler pulled up and hit a 10-footer.

The Bucks have lost five straight and are 3-12 in their last 15 games.

QUOTABLE: "I saw the clean side and just started pushing real hard. I knew he was going to bite if I pushed it to the basket. I stepped back and had all the time in the world to make the shot."

THE STATS: The Nuggets continually got into the lane, which lead to a 56-44 advantage in points in the paint and a 17-point advantage in made free throws.

TURNING POINT: After Ellis' four-point play, the Bucks had some momentum, but the Nuggets had Lawson. When his short jumper fell, the Bucks had no timeouts left. Ellis brought the ball upcourt but nearly lost it. The ball was tipped to J.J. Redick, whose 3-pointer was contested by Chandler and bounced off at the horn.

HOT: Ellis was 7-for-11 and 4-for-5 on 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and 14-for-25 and 6-for-11 on 3s for the game.

NOT: Ellis' backcourt mate Brandon Jennings went just 1-for-11, 0-for-5 from behind the arc.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Ellis' 38-point night was one short of his season-high of 39 set against Orlando March 17.

BAD MOVE: Ersan Ilyasova cleared a rebound with just under a minute left and the Bucks holding a 107-106 lead, but with no one pressuring him he fumbled the ball out of bounds. Andre Iguodala capitalized on that mistake with a basket that gave the Nuggets a 108-107 lead with 51.9 seconds left.

ROOKIE WATCH: John Henson started at center for the Bucks in place of injured Larry Sanders and had 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots.

NOTABLE: The Nuggets remained a game ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies, who won at Dallas. They're also 1 1/2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers, who host the Portland Trail Blazers Tuesday. ... The Nuggets swept the season series with the Bucks for the third straight season. ... The Bucks finished the home portion of their schedule with a 21-20 record. ... The Nuggets finished their road schedule at 19-22. ... JaVale McGee grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds in just 24 1/2 minutes. ...
