Mavericks-Hornets Preview

Although they'll miss the postseason for the first time in 13 years, the bearded Dallas Mavericks still have some unfinished business to attend to when they visit the New Orleans Hornets on Sunday night.

The Mavericks have a chance to get back to .500 for the first time since December, and several Dallas veterans will finally be able to shave after vowing two months ago not to until they reached that record.

The Mavericks (39-40) moved closer to the break-even mark with an impressive 108-105 overtime home win that denied surging Denver its franchise-record 55th victory.

Dirk Nowitzki finished with 22 points and O.J. Mayo added 20 - including a tie-breaking 3-pointer late in regulation and another go-ahead bucket in overtime - to help Dallas win for the third time in four games.

Nowitzki certainly appears motivated to remove his shaggy beard, totaling 43 points and 18 rebounds over his last two games. He's also averaged 24.8 points on 52.1 percent shooting in his last four in New Orleans.

"Honestly, I try to play the end of the season out strong and win the next game for coach (Rick Carlisle)," said Nowitzki, who needs 10 points to become the 17th NBA player to reach 25,000.

While the Mavericks are out of the playoffs for the first time since Nowitzki's second year, they were last at .500 on Dec. 12, when they were 11-11. Dallas has won 25 of 41 since dropping a season-worst 10 games under .500 on Jan. 9.

Now the Mavericks have a chance to break out the razors by winning two of three from Southwest Division-worst New Orleans.

Despite 25 points from Eric Gordon, the Hornets (27-53) dropped their third straight and seventh in nine games in a 96-93 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

"We are all feeling frustrated because we know we can win," coach Monty Williams said.

Robin Lopez added 19 points and 12 rebounds and Ryan Anderson scored 17 for New Orleans, which was playing without key starters Anthony Davis and Greivis Vasquez.

Davis - the 2012 first overall pick - will miss the rest of the season with a sprained left knee, but Vasquez is expected to return from an ankle sprain on Sunday.

Gordon, who looks for his fourth straight 20-point game, has averaged a team-best 18.5 in this series despite shooting 34.4 percent from the field. He completed a three-point play with 4.7 seconds left to lift the Hornets to a 99-96 overtime win at Dallas on Jan. 5.

Anderson has scored 19.0 per game while hitting 9 of 18 from 3-point range in his last three against the Mavericks.

Even shooting 6 for 19 from beyond the arc on Friday, New Orleans has made just 27.3 percent from that distance in its last six games.

The Hornets aren't likely to break out that slump against a Dallas defense that has limited opponents to 30.3 percent from 3-point range in its last four contests.

Mayo hit 5 of 7 from long range on Friday and had his first 20-point game since finishing with 22 at Detroit on March 8.

Vince Carter totaled 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists against the Nuggets and has 39 points on 54.2 percent shooting in this series. He hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left in a 104-100 win at New Orleans on Feb. 22.

The Mavericks have averaged 102.6 points while winning six of nine on the road.

Marion leads Mavs to 107-89 win over Hornets

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Dirk Nowitzki didn't even wait to shower before shaving off his beard.

After becoming the 17th player in NBA history to score 25,000 career points, he was even happier the Dallas Mavericks got back to .500 for the first time since mid-December, allowing him to shave off the facial hair he and his teammates had vowed to leave untouched until they evened their record.

Shawn Marion had 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting, Nowitzki scored 19 and the Dallas Mavericks beat the New Orleans Hornets 107-89 on Sunday night.

Brandan Wright and Vince Carter added 16 points off the bench for Mavericks. They had lost by double digits in their three previous chances to even their record.

"It's been too long," the clean-shaven Nowitzki said. "My wife stopped kissing me somewhere in February. It feels good to shave again."

Nowitzki reached the 25,000-point mark with a midrange jumper over Hornets' center Robin Lopez in the second quarter. Teammates said he reached for the razor almost as soon as he entered the locker room after the game.

Nowitzki, Chris Kaman, O.J. Mayo and Carter had not shaved since late January when Mayo said they would wait until they got back to .500. The Mavericks reached their low point on Jan. 9, falling to 13-23.

"Nobody thought that we could actually fight back," Nowitzki said. "We won some close games, we won some big games and made it interesting all the way down the stretch."

The Mavericks will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1989-90, but they played like they had postseason motivation in the first half. Dallas put this one away early, going on an 11-0 run after New Orleans scored the first basket and extending the advantage to as many as 27 points in the first half.

Nowitzki's landmark basket came with 6:45 left in the second quarter.

"It's an unbelievable accomplishment," he said. "When I first got in the league, I didn't know if I could make it here. I worked hard over 15 years, and it paid off."

Ryan Anderson led the cold-shooting Hornets with 20 points, but he was only 8 of 20 from the floor. Eric Gordon contributed 15 points, and Robin Lopez had 10 points and 13 rebounds. New Orleans shot 39.7 percent in its final home game.

Marion connected on 7 of 10 shots, and the Mavericks got pretty much whatever they wanted before the break. They scored 12 points on second-chance opportunities, 12 points on the fast break and 32 points in the paint while going 5 for 9 on 3-pointers. Their last basket of the first quarter was typical, Wright following his own missed shot with an uncontested dunk.

Wright dunked again to close out Dallas' scoring in the second quarter.

"We're veteran guys who have been around, and we feel like we're good enough to be in the playoffs," Carter said. "We let the opportunity slip away and have been playing catchup. The motivation is finishing off on a positive note, knowing that we should have been in the playoffs."

New Orleans began the second half on a 10-2 run to cut its deficit to 64-50, but the Hornets never pulled within single digits. The closest they came was 79-67 late in the third quarter, but Wright finished off the quarter with another dunk to make it 81-67 entering the fourth.

Nowitzki sank a midrange shot and Kaman converted a 3-point play as the Mavericks went back up by 19 early in the fourth to take control.

By then, it was obvious the beards were about to come off, although Nowitzki was the only player to shave his in the locker room.

"I need a barber to get mine," said Mayo, who had eight points and four assists. "I don't want to be too trigger happy."

The Hornets were without Anthony Davis, who is out for the rest of the year with a sprained left knee, but point guard Greivis Vasquez was back after missing Friday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers with a sprained right ankle.

New Orleans played its final home game as the Hornets. The team will become the Pelicans next season after 25 years as the Hornets - the first 14 in Charlotte and the last 11 in New Orleans.

Team mascot Hugo the Hornet made all five of his dunk attempts while jumping off a trampoline during a timeout in the first half in his last appearance. The Hornets could have used some of that energy.

"Obviously I didn't have everybody ready to play today, and that's solely on me," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "I can't grow up for the players we have. We have a lot of guys who need to grow up."

They could use Nowitzki as a model.

"He will go down as one of the NBA greats," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "Just his ability to do the things he does all over the court is what sets him apart."

NOTES: The last time Dallas was .500, its record was 11-11. .The Hornets had won four or their last five home finales. . Six Mavs scored between four and six points in the first quarter, setting the tone for a balanced night. . New Orleans finished 16-25 at home. . THE FACTS: The Dallas Mavericks kept alive hopes of ending the season with a winning record, moving to .500 with a 107-89 win over the New Orleans Hornets.

Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki became only the 17th player in NBA history to surpass 25,000 career points with a long jumper in the second quarter and finished with 19 for the game while Shawn Marion led the Mavericks with 21 points.

With two games left, Dallas (40-40) still has a chance at avoiding its first losing campaign since 1999-00. That's all the Mavericks have left to play for after missing out on the playoffs for the first time in 13 years.

New Orleans (27-54) didn't help itself with poor shooting in its home finale, however. The Hornets hit on only 37.9 percent of their shots, not nearly enough to keep pace with a Mavericks team that made more than half their attempts.

The home team never really gave itself a chance, giving up 62 points in the first half while making only 15 baskets.

New Orleans' starters tried, however. Ryan Anderson collected a double-double with a team-high 20 points and 12 rebounds while Robin Lopez added 10 points and 13 boards.

QUOTABLE: "We're trying to help guys mature and understand there's a responsibility that goes with being an NBA player. This is not AAU or college. This is the big boys' league."

THE STAT: 45, 33 -- New Orleans and Dallas took 87 and 86 shots, respectively, Sunday evening. They both hit nine 3-pointers and the Hornets attempted 18 free throws to the Mavericks' eight. But the difference was that Dallas converted its attempts from the floor and New Orleans did not. Dallas made 45 of its shots, 12 more than the Hornets did.

TURNING POINT: The Hornets began the game with a 3-pointer by Anderson. It was the last time New Orleans was on the right side of the score. Former Hornet Chris Kaman put back his own missed layup that started a 12-2 Dallas run that set the tone for the game. Dallas went on to outscore the Hornets 33-19 in the first quarter and the Mavericks never were threatened again.

HOT: Dallas' Marion finished the game 10-for-16, keeping him hot in the month of April. In the past seven games, Marion has connected on 56.7 percent of his shots, scoring in double figures ever game, including 20-plus in four of the past six games.

NOT: The Hornets' Greivis Vasquez finished the game 5-for-16, not exactly the return to action he was looking for after missing New Orleans' previous game with an ankle injury. He was largely ineffective, likely slowed by the bum right ankle that has bothered him for much of the past three weeks.

NOTABLE: Dallas' players who were growing beards all can now shave as they made a pact to grow beards until they reached .500. ... New Orleans played its final home game ever as the Hornets. The franchise will become the Pelicans next season. ... Dallas' bench outscored New Orleans' 44-23. ... New Orleans tied its season-high with 20 offensive rebounds.
