Thunder-Trail Blazers Preview

A visit from the Oklahoma City Thunder might not present the ideal opportunity for the Portland Trail Blazers to avoid setting a club record for consecutive home losses.

Mired in a nine-game overall skid, the Trail Blazers look to avoid a seventh straight home defeat and a season sweep at the hands of the Western Conference-leading Thunder on Friday night.

If missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season wasn't bad enough, Portland (33-45) is in the midst of its longest overall losing stretch since dropping 11 in a row March 14-April 2, 2006. The current slide also includes a six-game skid at home to match the longest such drought in the club's history.

Attempting to end both losing streaks likely won't be easy against Oklahoma City (58-21), which has won six in a row overall against the Trail Blazers and three straight at the Rose Garden. The Thunder moved one-half game ahead of San Antonio in the race for the top seed in the West with a 116-97 win at playoff-bound Golden State on Thursday.

Oklahoma City has won two straight, eight of 10, and just concluded a 5-1 stretch against teams above .500 or who have already clinched a playoff spot.

"Our approach was to embrace the challenge," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "And I think our guys have done a good job of that."

Now they must try to avoid a letdown against the Blazers, who fell to 0-4 on a five-game homestand after a 113-106 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. Though Portland totaled more than 98 points for the first time in six home contests, they allowed Kobe Bryant to score a season-high 47 and the Lakers to shoot 58.9 percent overall.

Though Portland opponents have averaged 108.3 points and shot 51.7 percent in the last nine games, coach Terry Stotts was happy with his team's latest performance.

"It was a very good effort by our team, but unfortunately we couldn't pull it out," he said.

With starters Wesley Matthews (ankle), J.J. Hickson (back) and Nicolas Batum (shoulder) all dealing with injuries that could keep them sidelined again Friday, the Trail Blazers continue to rely on guard Damian Lillard.

Averaging a rookie-best 19.1 points per contest, Lillard went toe-to-toe with Bryant and finished with a career-high 38 and added nine assists Wednesday.

"He's spectacular ... really fantastic," Bryant said of the sixth overall pick. "A lot of players get hot, but he's got the moves, patience, intelligence, the balance on his jumpers. He's the real deal."

Lillard has averaged 16.3 points but shot 38.8 percent in three games versus Oklahoma City. He was held to nine on 3-of-14 shooting in the Trail Blazers' 87-83 home loss to the Thunder on Jan. 13.

Kevin Durant had 31 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists while Kevin Martin scored 23 off the bench as the Thunder shot 50.6 percent and outscored the Warriors 36-23 in the third quarter to pull away.

Durant has totaled 52 points on 16-of-26 shooting, 22 boards and 17 assists in his last two games. He's posted two double-doubles against the Trail Blazers this season and averaged 30.3 points and shot 54.4 percent in the last three at Portland.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) While Kevin Durant couldn't help but joke a bit about Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook's outburst in the third quarter against the Portland Trail Blazers, putting away games is all part of Oklahoma City's groundwork for the playoffs.

Westbrook scored 33 points, including 17 in the third quarter, and the Thunder beat short-handed Portland 106-90 on Friday night.

"He was drinking some of that Space Jam juice in here at halftime," Durant said with a laugh. "But really, we're just playing the way we need to play right now."

Earlier in the evening, the Thunder clinched their third straight Northwest Division title when Dallas defeated Denver 108-105 in overtime. Oklahoma City also remained a half-game up on San Antonio for the top seed in the Western Conference.

Durant added 16 points for the Thunder, who led by as many as 22 points.

"That wasn't a given," Westbrook said about the division title. "A lot of guys came back better, and we've put in a lot of work to put ourselves in a position to win it again."

Portland, missing the playoffs for the second straight season, lost its 10th straight, the most since an 11-game skid in the 2005-06 season. The team has lost seven straight at home, the most in franchise history.

The Blazers were led by Will Barton - starting in place of injured shooting guard Wesley Matthews - with 18 points.

Portland was sunk in the third quarter when the team was outscored 26-7 by the Thunder. It was a franchise-worst third period total for the Blazers.

"The third quarter, our offense was ground down," coach Terry Stotts said. "We stopped moving the ball. We didn't create shots and we were loose with the turnovers. It was a bad combination."

The Thunder were without Kendrick Perkins because of a right hamstring injury he aggravated in a 116-97 victory at Golden State on Thursday night. Hasheem Thabeet started in his place.

Thunder guard Kevin Martin was also sitting out because of back spasms.

J.J. Hickson returned to Portland's starting lineup after he missed a game with a sore lower back. But the Trail Blazers remained without Matthews (right ankle) for the second straight game and Nicolas Batum (right shoulder) for the fifth straight.

Both teams were streaky early. The Blazers opened with a 13-12 lead, but the Thunder went on an 11-2 run to take a 24-15 lead after Westbrook's 3-pointer.

Barton capped an 11-2 Portland run with a layup to move the Blazers within 30-28 early in the second quarter. Then Oklahoma City went on an 11-2 run to go up 41-30.

The Blazers took a 46-44 lead with 3:06 left in the first half after a 16-3 run that Victor Claver capped with a 3-pointer. Damian Lillard, who scored a career-high 38 points Wednesday against the Lakers, was scoreless until a reverse layup with 30.9 seconds to go before halftime.

The Thunder took a 55-54 lead into the break after Thabo Sefolosha's 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Oklahoma City opened the second half with a 9-0 run and went up 72-59 on Westbrook's 17-foot jumper. His 3-pointer gave the Thunder an 81-61 lead going into the final quarter.

"All night we were trying to feed him. He had the hot hand," Durant said about Westbrook. "I think he did a good job of moving the ball. He missed some shots, but the ball movement was pretty good tonight and Rus was the main advocate. He did it all."

Barton's dunk pulled the Blazers to 97-84 with 4:03 left in the game, prompting Thunder coach Scott Brooks to briefly bring back in Westbrook and Durant, who had been sitting since the end of the third quarter.

It was as close as Portland would get.

"There's a reason they went to the finals last year and are fighting for the No. 1 seed in the west again," Barton said. "They're getting ready for the playoffs, so that's what you expect from them."

Hickson and LaMarcus Aldridge sat out the fourth for the Blazers.

Portland was coming off a 113-106 loss to the Lakers on Wednesday night. Kobe Bryant had a season-high 47 points, most ever scored by an opposing player in the Rose Garden.

NOTES: Earlier Friday, Durant was fined $25,000 by the NBA for making a "menacing gesture," when he pretended to slice his throat after dunking in the second quarter against the Warriors. ... THE FACTS: Russell Westbrook scored 33 points ? 17 of them in a decisive third quarter ? as Oklahoma City blew out the Portland Trail Blazers 106-90 Friday night at the Rose Garden.

Leading 55-54 at the half, Oklahoma City took control in the third quarter, outscoring Portland 26-7 for an 81-61 lead heading into the final period.

Reggie Jackson came off the bench for 17 points and Kevin Durant added 16 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Thunder (59-21), who moved 1 1/2 games ahead of San Antonio in the battle for the best record in the Western Conference.

Rookie Will Barton scored 18 points to lead the Trail Blazers (33-46), who suffered their 10th straight defeat and their seventh straight at home, the latter a franchise record.

QUOTABLE: "I don't know if we can take all the credit. They missed shots they've been making all year, but our defense was outstanding. Any time you can hold a team under 10 points, you're doing something right."

THE STAT: The Thunder shot .650 in the first quarter, .550 in the first half and .519 for the game ? the seventh Portland opponent in its last eight games to finish at better than 50 percent.

TURNING POINT: OKC opened the third quarter on a 13-2 run to go on top 68-56. It was all she wrote for the Blazers.

QUOTABLE II: "It's tough. I hate losing, especially with the type of season we had. I don't want to go into the offseason on a [13-game] losing streak. I want to win at least one [more] game. It's frustrating to be losing."

HOT: Westbrook made 6 of his 10 shots from the field and 4-for-4 shots from the line in personally outscoring the Blazers 17-7 in the third quarter.

NOT: Portland made 3 of his 21 field-goal attempts in the fateful quarter.

GOOD MOVE: The Thunder jumped Lillard on every pick-and-roll opportunity and made him either pass or force up a contested shot.

BAD MOVE: Three times, Barton simply lost the ball in the dribble while trying to make a move at the basket.
