Grizzlies-Rockets Preview

The Memphis Grizzlies' starters got a nice break heading into their upcoming back-to-back set of games.

That's probably an even bigger benefit with a visit to Houston on tap.

Memphis continues its push for home-court advantage in the first round of the postseason Friday night when the playoff-bound Rockets go for a 14th straight home win in this series.

With Mike Conley the lone starter in the game, Jon Leuer, Quincy Pondexter, Austin Daye and Ed Davis keyed a 19-6 fourth-quarter surge in a 94-75 win over Charlotte on Tuesday. Leuer finished with a season-best 11 points, Daye added 10 with seven rebounds and Pondexter and Davis each scored eight as Memphis (53-25) moved a franchise-best 28 games above .500.

"It just shows the depth of our team - on any given night, someone can come out and be heroic," guard Tony Allen said. "... that was a big lift for our starters, you know, for our bodies, just sitting in that fourth quarter, knowing we have a back-to-back coming up."

The Grizzlies, one game behind third-seeded Denver (54-24) for home court in the first round, host the Pacific Division champion Los Angeles Clippers, the No. 4 seed, on Saturday.

Memphis, the league leader in scoring defense at 89.5 points per game, has given up 84.9 during a 6-1 run that started with a 103-94 home win over the Rockets (44-34) on March 29.

The Grizzlies, though, were perhaps at their worst at the defensive end in a 121-96 loss at Houston on Dec. 22, as they allowed their highest point total in two seasons.

That game tied for Memphis' most lopsided defeat in its 13-game losing streak at Houston that started Nov. 25, 2006.

The Rockets, among the NBA leaders with 106.2 points per game, have won 14 of 17 at home and five of six overall. They'll try to split this series after clinching their first playoff berth since 2008-09 on Tuesday.

After defeating Phoenix 101-98 on a game-ending goaltending call on James Harden's 3-point attempt, Houston earned a postseason berth later that night when Utah fell to Oklahoma City.

"It's a great accomplishment for us," Harden said. "For our first year together, it's a pretty good thing."

The Rockets, though, can't slow down if they want to catch sixth-place Golden State - 3-1 against Houston - and avoid a possible first-round matchup with the Thunder or San Antonio. If Houston does earn the sixth spot, it could open against Memphis.

The Rockets could be without Chandler Parsons, their second-leading scorer, for a fourth consecutive game Friday, while Carlos Delfino is questionable due to flu-like symptoms after a four-game absence.

It's uncertain if Darrell Arthur or Jerryd Bayless will return for Memphis after both missed the last two games.

The Grizzlies can win the season series against Houston for the first time since sweeping it in 2005-06.

Grizzlies snap long losing streak in Houston

HOUSTON (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies have big goals in mind for the rest of this season. At the top of the list on Friday was ending their long losing streak in Houston.

Marc Gasol had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Zach Randolph added 15 points and the Grizzlies snapped a 13-game skid in Houston with an 82-78 victory over the Rockets.

The teams could possibly meet in the first round of the playoffs, but the talk at the Memphis shootaround was all about beating Houston on its home floor for the first time since April 2006.

"Every time we came here, it was on our mind," Gasol said. "We needed this win for many reasons, and that was one of them."

James Harden scored 30 points, but missed a potential game-tying jumper from near the top of the key just before the buzzer. Tony Allen and Tayshaun Prince did most of the work guarding Harden, and the NBA's fifth-leading scorer missed all seven shots in the fourth quarter.

"We were just trying to make it as tough for him as we can," Allen said. "Through the course of the game, me and Tayshaun were hard on him and made him work and kind of forced him to miss that shot."

Memphis has won seven of eight games, while the Rockets lost for the third time in 11 home games.

Jeremy Lin had 17 points for Houston and sank a 3-pointer with 1:33 left to tie it at 78-all. Gasol and Mike Conley hit free throws over the next 45 seconds to put Memphis up by two.

On Tuesday night, Houston beat Phoenix when Jermaine O'Neal was called for goaltending on Harden's last-second 3-pointer. Everyone in the sellout crowd knew the Rockets would go back to Harden again.

He faked out Allen for a clear look at the last shot but missed. Harden sank five 3-pointers in the game, but finished 7 for 24 from the field.

"They are a very good team," Harden said. "We can't look to score 130 points a game. We've got to find ways to score when we don't score 100 or 110 points."

The Grizzlies' top-ranked scoring defense stifled Houston most of the night. The Rockets, the NBA's highest-scoring team, went 23 of 73 from the field (31.5 percent) and committed 20 turnovers.

Rockets coach Kevin McHale had point guards Lin and Beverley on the floor for the start of the second quarter, and Beverley hit a 3 from the corner. Otherwise, the Rockets' offense continued to sputter, and Darrell Arthur finished another alley-oop, this one fed by Keyon Dooling, for a 32-22 Memphis lead.

McHale had his starters back in for the last four minutes of the half, but Houston didn't reach 30 points until Greg Smith's free throw with 3:05 left. Bayless, back after sitting out two games with a sore right knee, sank a 3-pointer and Prince drove for an easy dunk to put the Grizzlies up 46-30.

Houston went 11 for 37 from the field, gave away 10 turnovers and trailed by as many as 19 in the first half.

"The first half, I thought we came out a little bit timid," McHale said. "We weren't really playing as hard as I thought we had to."

Houston chipped away with some suffocating defense of its own. The Grizzlies went seven minutes without a field goal between the third and fourth quarters, and the Rockets tied it at 66-all with just under nine minutes left.

Gasol hit a fadeaway jumper with 7:14 left, ending the field-goal drought for Memphis. The Grizzlies' defense picked up again and the Rockets were back to the disjointed offense they showed at the beginning.

Lin, who had five assists, said the final quarter was a valuable experience for the Rockets with the playoffs so close.

"We wanted to win, obviously, but I think we did some good things down the stretch," Lin said. "We gave them a couple of different looks, a couple of different plays and things we've been working on. Hopefully, this will better prepare us for the future."

Gasol, meanwhile, was disappointed in the way the Grizzlies finished the game, even though they pulled out the victory.

"At least for three quarters, we had pretty good focus," Gasol said. "In the fourth quarter, we didn't do a good job. We were not as sharp executing as we should be."

Notes: Allen briefly left after hurting his left hip colliding with Smith in the third quarter. ... Gasol recorded his 100th career double-double. ... Harden has 22 30-point games this season. ... Rockets F Chandler Parsons missed his fourth consecutive game with a strained right calf. McHale expects Parsons to play in two of Houston's final three regular-season games, including the finale against the Lakers.

THE FACTS: For the first time in 14 visits to Houston, the Memphis Grizzlies will leave town with a good reason to feel satisfied. Memphis snapped a 13-game losing streak at Toyota Center with an 82-78 win over the Houston Rockets on Friday.

Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 15 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, while Zach Randolph added 15 points and eight boards. Jerryd Bayless finished with 13 points and four rebounds off the bench for Memphis (54-25), which has won seven of its last eight games overall after earning its first victory in Houston since April 16, 2005. The Grizzlies' triumph, paired with the Denver Nuggets' loss in Dallas on Friday, moved Memphis into a tie with the Nuggets for third place in the Western Conference with three games remaining in the regular season for each team. Denver holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

James Harden scored a game-high 30 points to pace the Rockets, but he missed 17 of his 24 field-goal attempts and committed eight turnovers. Jeremy Lin poured in 17 points and dished out five assists for Houston (43-35), which had won 14 of its previous 17 at home.

QUOTABLE: "All the guys [on our team] are just on the same page. When you've got five guys out there with the same goal, fighting hard and playing together, this is the outcome -- you get the win."

THE STAT: Houston, which allowed 20 points off 20 turnovers Friday, has given up an average of 21.2 points off an average of 18.0 turnovers over its last five games.

TURNING POINT: The Rockets were unable to hit their stride on offense, so they turned to defense to rally from a 19-point deficit. Houston limited Memphis to only four points during an eight-minute stretch, as it went on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 64 with 9:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. The teams traded blows until the final minute, when Gasol blocked a driving Harden to preserve the Grizzlies' 79-78 lead. Harden had an excellent opportunity to extend the game to overtime -- with Memphis up 80-78 in the closing seconds -- but he was unable to knock down an open mid-range jump shot.

QUOTABLE II: "We had our chances. We just didn't do a good enough job of putting the ball in the hole. We had some turnovers that hurt us. It wasn't a great game, but our guys showed a lot of fight."

HOT: Gasol impacted the game more than any player on the court, stuffing the stat sheet with 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals. The 7-foot-1 center has kept the rim well-protected over the last four games, blocking an average of 3.3 shots.

NOT: The Rockets were unable to increase the tempo in the opening half, when the Grizzlies limited them to only four fast-break points and forced 10 turnovers. Houston's 29.7 percent (11-for-37) shooting effort over the first 24 minutes also put Memphis in prime position to silence the Rockets' run-and-gun attack.

GOOD MOVE: Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins effectively utilized large and small lineups throughout Memphis' season series with the Rockets, and it has certainly produced positive results. For the second time this season, the Grizzlies held Houston to its season low in field-goal percentage (31.1 percent) while becoming only the fourth club to limit the Rockets to less than 80 points.

QUOTABLE III: "When the opponents can score ... we have to change our lineups a lot. Like tonight, I had to play only one big. We tried to play two some, but they were taking advantage of us, so I went to one and it shored up what we were doing. I even played four guards at one time. ... We're going to have to match up and play that way [in the playoffs]. If we can't score with our bigs, then we're going to have to score with our smalls."

BAD MOVE: Houston would not be headed to the playoffs without Harden's fearless play, but he has fallen victim to reckless decision-making at times during his last two outings. After committing a season-high nine turnovers in Tuesday's win over Phoenix, the NBA's fifth-leading scorer gave the ball away eight times Friday.

NOTABLE: The Rockets played without starting small forward Chandler Parsons (strained right calf) for the fourth game in a row, but reserve wing Carlos Delfino returned to the lineup after sitting out the last four games with flu-like symptoms. ... Memphis' Darrell Arthur (sore back) and Bayless (sore right knee) were available again after missing the last two games ... The Grizzlies, which took the season series from Houston for the first time since 2005-06, improved to 6-30 all-time when playing the Rockets in Houston. ... Memphis is a franchise-record 29 games above .500. ... The Grizzlies improved to 24-9 this season with Tayshaun Prince in their starting five. ... The Rockets, who had averaged 54.4 points in the paint over their first five games in April, scored only 22 points in the paint Friday. ... Houston fell to 7-18 this season when it scores less than 100 points. ... Rookie Terrence Jones matched his career high with 12 rebounds.
