Clippers-Hornets Preview

Although they've clinched their first division title and set franchise records for victories, the Los Angeles Clippers still have plenty to play for during the final week of the regular season.

The Clippers resume their chase for home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs when they visit the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night.

Los Angeles (52-26) added to its lengthy list of accomplishments Wednesday when it cruised past Minnesota 111-95 for its third straight win and franchise-best 31st home victory.

While they're guaranteed a top-four seed in the West as the Pacific Division champs, the Clippers moved to within one game of fifth-seeded Memphis for home-court advantage in the first round.

"We're starting to get our sense of urgency back and it's starting to show," said reserve Matt Barnes, who scored 14 points Wednesday.

Los Angeles - 21-17 on the road - plays three of its final four games away from home, including a key contest at Memphis on Saturday night. The Clippers own the tiebreaker over the Grizzlies, having won two of three meetings.

Los Angeles, however, can't afford to look past a New Orleans team that has lost six of eight and will be without forward Anthony Davis for the rest of the season.

Davis limped off the court Wednesday after drawing an offensive foul in the fourth quarter of a 121-110 loss at Sacramento. He was diagnosed Thursday with a sprained medial collateral ligament and bone bruise in his knee, and further evaluation and an MRI showed no additional structural damage.

After dropping four of five on their road trip, the Southwest Division-worst Hornets (27-52) play their first home game this month.

They've won four of six at home, though one of those defeats was 105-91 to the Clippers on March 27. The teams split two previous matchups in Los Angeles.

Former Clipper Eric Gordon had a team-best 23 points for New Orleans on Wednesday and finished with 24 in last month's loss in this series.

The Hornets, who have averaged 91.0 points and shot 46.1 percent in the three games, will face a Los Angeles defense that has limited opponents to 42.4 percent shooting during the winning streak.

"The past three games our defense has been really good. We're talking a lot more and the energy picked up," All-Star point guard Chris Paul said.

Paul has also played a major role offensively, averaging 19.3 points and 11.7 assists while shooting 53.8 percent in recording three straight double-doubles.

The Clippers have scored 113.0 per game while making 53.0 percent from the field over their last four.

They should be able to continue that efficiency against the Hornets, who have surrendered 112.5 points on 53.0 percent shooting in consecutive losses.

Los Angeles snapped a nine-game road skid in this series last month.

Griffin, Paul lead Clippers past Hornets, 96-93

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Chris Paul overcame a lackluster first three quarters and reminded New Orleans what it has missed most since he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers - a player who takes over when it matters.

Paul scored eight of his 17 points in the final minute, when he also made a key defensive stop, and finished with 14 assists to help the Clippers erase a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit and beat the hapless Hornets 96-93 on Friday night.

"We didn't have much energy tonight. That starts with me. I was dead early," Paul said. "We've got to win games like this. We've got to win ugly games. It's not always going to be pretty."

Blake Griffin scored 20 points and Matt Barnes 16, scoring three times during a critical stretch for the Clippers, who would have seen their hopes of earning home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs take a hit with a loss.

Instead, the Clippers won their fourth straight in large part thanks to Paul, who made a pull-up jumper to give Los Angeles a three-point lead with 52.3 seconds to go, thwarted Brian Roberts' driving layup attempt with 45 seconds left, and then made six straight free throws when the Hornets had to start fouling intentionally.

With Paul running Los Angeles' offense, the Clippers scored on their last 11 possessions, and 15 of their last 16, giving them 31 points during the last seven minutes.

"It was big for us because it also showed us that we're capable of buckling down and getting a win in a tough environment," Paul said.

The Clippers (53-26) play Saturday night at Memphis (54-25), one of the challengers to finish with the third- or fourth-best record in the West, along with Denver (54-25).

Eric Gordon scored 25 points for New Orleans, which has lost three straight.

Robin Lopez had 19 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans, which was playing without forward Anthony Davis (left knee) and point guard Greivis Vasquez (right ankle).

Ryan Anderson scored 17 points, and Roberts had 15 points and 11 assists in a spot start at point guard.

Hornets coach Monty Williams said the 39 points New Orleans allowed in the fourth quarter was "tough to swallow," but added he was proud of the way his team threatened to upset the Pacific Division winners despite being without two starters.

"We are all feeling frustrated because we know we can win," Williams said.

Los Angeles held a slim lead midway through the third quarter after Griffin's step-back jumper. Then New Orleans surprisingly surged into the lead with a 9-0 run that included Anderson's 3 and two layups by Roberts, one on a fast break after his steal.

The Hornets' lead grew to 75-65 on Gordon's free throws with 8:31 to go.

New Orleans still led by eight, 80-72, after Gordon's 3 with 5:13 left. Then Paul scored on a baseline drive, initiating a 24-13 run to close the game.

"In that fourth quarter, we didn't panic, but we did get too jittery," Roberts said. "I think going through this right now will help this young team in the future.

Guard Eric Bledsoe played a pivotal role down the stretch after Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro decided to go with a smaller, quicker lineup that he hoped would get New Orleans out of rhythm along the perimeter and allow Paul to play off the ball more.

"I just felt like we had to scramble the game up," Del Negro said. "We had no real energy and no real rhythm. Sometimes you have to roll the dice and it worked this time."

Los Angeles struggled badly from 3-point range, missing 19 of 26. But Jamal Crawford made two late 3s after missing six of his first seven and finished with 15 points.

"We did a poor job through three quarters of getting good shots and getting stops," Griffin said. "For us to respond like that is a positive, but we can't play like that."

The Hornets outworked Los Angeles inside much of the game, finishing with 19 offensive rebounds and 27 second-chance points, but New Orleans also was a dismal 6 for 19 from 3-point range and was hurt by 15 missed free throws.

Both teams went through stretches in which their play was not sharp in the opening two quarters. The Hornets missed 11 free throws and 10 3s in the first half, during which the Clippers missed 12 3s and turned the ball over eight times.

Griffin had nine early points on three dunks, a layup and a free throw, but did not score in the second quarter, when he attempted two 3s, missing both. Lopez kept the Hornets close early with 15 of his points in the first half. After New Orleans had missed its first 10 3-point attemtps, Roberts finally made one late in the half to match one made by Paul moments earlier and cut the Clippers' lead to 43-40 at halftime.

NOTES: The Hornets finished 1-3 against the Clippers this season. ... Roberts was making his fourth start of the season, he had averaged 11.7 points in his previous three starts. ... De Andre Jordon limped off the court after falling awkwardly in the third quarter, but returned to the game.

THE FACTS: In a tougher game than the Los Angeles Clippers would have liked with playoff seeding on the line, they came from 10 points down to beat the New Orleans Hornets 96-93. The Clippers used 10 points, two rebounds and assists and a block in the fourth quarter by Chris Paul to overcome the deficit. Paul finished with 17 points and 14 assists to go with seven rebounds to pace Los Angeles (54-26). Matt Barnes added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jamal Crawford had 15 points off the bench.

New Orleans (27-53) led for much of the second half, including more than 12 straight minutes. But the inexperience of the team showed down the stretch, allowing the Clippers easy shots and rebounds. And free throws. Paul hits six consecutive free throws in the final 17 seconds to put the game away.

The Hornets were without rookie Anthony Davis (sprained left knee) and point guard Greivis Vasquez (sprained right ankle) as well as forward Lance Thomas (foot). New Orleans used an eight-man rotation with Brian Roberts doing everything he could from the point position to facilitate the offense. He scored 15 points, had 11 assists and grabbed six rebounds. Meanwhile, Eric Gordon had 25 points and Robin Lopez had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

But Los Angeles was too much. Two and a half weeks earlier, the Clippers won in New Orleans by 14. Friday night, they took a different route to the win. The Clippers held New Orleans to just 42 percent shooting, including 6-for-19 from 3-point range, and forced 13 turnovers, which they turned into 17 points. Los Angeles will now head to Memphis for a Saturday night showdown that could keep the Clippers on the West Coast in the opening round of the playoffs. Los Angeles trail the Grizzlies by a game with three to play for each.

THE STAT: New Orleans could have put the game out of reach much earlier if it had converted from the free-throw line. The Hornets hit on just 53.1 percent from the stripe, going 17-for-32 in the game.

TURNING POINT: The Hornets pushed their lead to 10 points on the second of two Gordon free throws. But then the Clippers got going, rattling off a 14-6 run to put them squarely back in the game with 3 and 1/2 minutes to go.

QUOTABLE II: "They're down, obviously. When you lose a game, you feel it. But at the same time, I want them to be down. If they were happy after a loss, I'd still be in there."

HOT: Los Angeles' Crawford didn't have a particularly explosive night. But in the fourth quarter, he went 3-for-5, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range, making a big difference in Los Angeles' comeback. He also was 2-for-4 from the free-throw line and finished with 10 fourth-quarter points, a quarter of what Los Angeles scored in the defining quarter.

NOT: The Hornets' Ryan Anderson had a poor-shooting first half. The team's 3-point leader was 0-for-5 from long-range in the first 23 minutes. He had only five points at halftime. The team's leading free-throw shooter also was just 1-for-4 from the free-throw line.

GOOD MOVE: Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro had Paul on the bench to begin the fourth quarter. But with 8:50 play, he rolled the dice and put his floor leader back in the game. Thirty seconds later, the Clippers trailed by 10 but that would be it for the Hornets as Paul facilitated the comeback.

NOTABLE: Los Angeles won the season series 3-1 over New Orleans. ... New Orleans' Lopez recorded his seventh double-double of the season. ... New Orleans outscored the Clippers 27-8 in second-chance points. ... Los Angeles' bench outscored New Orleans' 47-10. ... Los Angeles' Paul had his 29th double-double of the season.
