With a playoff berth at stake, Kobe Bryant continues to will the Los Angeles Lakers to victory.

The veteran superstar, though, still has plenty of work to do.

Looking to continue their quest for a postseason spot, Bryant and the surging Lakers go for a 10th consecutive home win over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night.

One night after scoring 23 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter of a 104-96 victory win New Orleans, Bryant went off for a season-high 47 in Wednesday's 113-106 victory at Portland.

"What he is doing is phenomenal. He's determined to get us in the playoffs," said coach Mike D'Antoni, whose team has won five of six. "That's what happens when you open your mouth and guarantee that we'll get in the playoffs."

The eighth-place Lakers (42-37) are now one game ahead of Utah for the Western Conference's final postseason berth with three to go. Los Angeles, though, needs to finish ahead of the Jazz, who own the tiebreaker.

"We've got no breathing room at all," Bryant said. "I'm still on edge. We've got to win three more games and we're in."

The Lakers control their own destiny, but their road to the postseason could be tough.

After this game, Los Angeles concludes its schedule against San Antonio and Houston. Utah, meanwhile, plays Northwest Division-worst Minnesota twice before visiting Memphis.

The Lakers, though, have to like their chances of taking care of business versus Golden State (45-34). They have won 34 of 37 in the series at home, including the last nine by an average of 14.7 points. Los Angeles cruised to an easy 101-77 victory during the Warriors' last visit Nov. 9.

The Lakers had gone 18-1 in the series overall before coming up short 109-103 at Golden State on March 25. Bryant had 36 points but shot just 11 of 27. He's averaging 33.8 in his last eight matchups against the Warriors.

After clinching its first playoff berth since 2007 with Tuesday's 105-89 win over Minnesota, Golden State couldn't keep up Thursday in a 116-97 loss to Oklahoma City. Stephen Curry had 22 points but the Warriors allowed the Thunder to shoot 50.6 percent.

"That was a team that's chasing the No. 1 seed and was trying to send a message, 'Just in case I see you at some point down the road,'" coach Mark Jackson said.

Sitting just one-half game ahead of Houston for the No. 6 seed, Golden State is expected to be without Andrew Bogut, who sprained his surgically repaired left ankle Thursday. He's missed 48 of 79 games, mostly due to lingering ankle woes.

The former No. 1 overall pick is averaging a career-low 5.9 points, but he's second on the team with 7.6 rebounds per game.

With Bogut sidelined, the Warriors could have an even harder time trying to contain Pau Gasol, who's finally starting to round into form after missing 33 games over the course of the season. The four-time All-Star, averaging 6.7 assists during the team's 5-1 run, has scored a combined 45 points in the last two contests on 20-of-30 from the field.

"I'm still not 100 percent, and I won't be," said Gasol, who's shooting 58.3 percent over the last eight games. "I'm managing it well. I'm getting good rhythm, I'm making good decisions, and my focus is really good right now. We're just doing whatever it takes to win."

Lakers lose Kobe, survive thriller with Warriors

LOS ANGELES (AP) Kobe Bryant pushed his fraying body and his Los Angeles Lakers teammates relentlessly through the second half of a vital game until he felt a searing pain in his left heel.

Bryant's Achilles' tendon apparently is torn. His season likely is over.

And though the Lakers held on to beat Golden State, Bryant thinks they'll have to continue their playoff chase without their leader.

Bryant scored 34 points while playing much of the second half in obvious pain with an injured left leg, eventually leaving with 3:06 to play in the Lakers' 118-116 win over the Warriors on Friday night.

Bryant hyperextended his left knee early in the half, but didn't come out while the Lakers chased a victory that kept them one game ahead of Utah for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Bryant then hurt himself seriously on a relatively innocent drive to the hoop, altering the Lakers' season and possibly changing NBA history.

"I made a move that I've made a million times, and it just popped," he said solemnly while leaning on crutches in the Lakers' locker room.

Bryant got the ball on the perimeter, stuck out his leg and pushed off his left foot to drive past Harrison Barnes. Bryant didn't make it two steps before he fell to the court in obvious pain while Barnes was called for a foul, but Bryant stayed in the game long enough to hit his free throws before trainer Gary Vitti helped him to the locker room.

"I can't walk," Bryant said. "I tried to maybe put pressure on my heel, but there was nothing there."

Immediately after the game, the Lakers announced Bryant probably had a torn tendon. He will have an MRI exam Saturday, but Bryant knows the injury is likely to end his season.

Bryant called it the most disappointing injury of his career "by far."

"We worked so hard to put ourselves in position and control our fate," he said. "I certainly have done a lot of work to prepare myself. It's just bad luck."

Achilles' tendon injuries can require months of rehabilitation and recovery, depending on their severity, and the 34-year-old Bryant has enormous mileage on his legs after 17 NBA seasons. The NBA's No. 3 scorer this season has played more than 38 minutes per game this season, more than any teammate.

When asked what the injury meant for his career, Bryant bristled at the suggestion it could finish him.

"I know I can do this," said Bryant, who's averaging 27.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 6.0 assists. "It's fueling me. It's fueling me. I can feel it already."

The fourth-leading scorer in NBA history has been ferociously competitive down the stretch of the Lakers' tumultuous season. While Pau Gasol and Steve Nash have missed long stretches of play with injuries, and while Dwight Howard struggled to get to full strength after last year's back surgery, Bryant played through a sprained ankle and countless minor woes.

"I hate it for Kobe," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I hate it for us. I hate it for L.A., but you have to close ranks. There's no going back now. ... He's just an unbelievable player with a heart, and it is unbelievable."

After playing all 48 minutes while scoring 47 points in Portland on Wednesday, Bryant pushed the Lakers relentlessly forward on one good leg against the playoff-bound Warriors. Golden State got 47 points from Stephen Curry in a dynamic performance, but Bryant led a 9-0 run by hitting consecutive 3-pointers to tie it at 107 with 3:47 left.

Moments later, Bryant's season likely ended.

Bryant didn't know whether his heavy workload contributed to the injury.

"Who knows? It was all necessary," he said. "It's just a freak situation, I guess."

His teammates improbably did just fine without him, with Gasol and Howard getting huge baskets in the final minutes while the Warriors wilted.

Los Angeles (43-37) stayed one game ahead of Utah (42-38) for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference with two games to go. The Jazz hold the tiebreaker.

"He's the greatest competitor, and he's been that all season long, all through his career," said Gasol, who had 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in his sixth career triple-double. "He's been an example for us throughout all this. He showed character. He showed heart, and that's what we're going to need from now on."

Howard added 28 points and seven rebounds, capping a competent 14-for-22 effort at the free throw line with one last point with 1.5 seconds left.

After Steve Blake hit the Lakers' go-ahead free throws with 42 seconds left, Jarrett Jack made a turnover and Carl Landry missed an open jumper on the Warriors' final two possessions. Howard clinched the Lakers' 10th consecutive home win over Golden State.

Bryant said his teammates must "just continue to play. We've been dealing with injuries all year. I'll do what I can, watching film and communicating to the guys the best form of attacking certain teams, and go from there."

Curry scored 22 points in the first quarter and 32 in the first half in a barrage of outside shooting, but didn't have a field goal in the final 7:19, managing just two free throws in the clutch. He fell one 3-pointer shy of Peja Stojakovic's record 10 by a Lakers opponent.

Curry scored 54 points earlier this season in a loss at New York.

"That's twice this year, so I've got to find a way to finish it, whatever it takes," Curry said. "We had good looks. That last play, Carl had a good look at it, and he makes that shot nine out of 10 times."

Klay Thompson scored 25 points and David Lee added 19 for the Warriors.

Los Angeles began the day barely ahead of the Jazz for the eighth spot, but Utah has the tiebreaker and an easier schedule than the Lakers, who finish against three straight playoff teams. Los Angeles must finish a game ahead of the Jazz to make sure they won't miss the playoffs for just the second time in Bryant's 17 NBA seasons - even if Bryant can't join them.

Curry finished the first quarter with 9-of-13 shooting and two assists, with no Lakers defenders able to keep up. Bryant went scoreless in the first, but heated up for 10 points in the first 3:10 of the second.

Despite Curry's brilliance, the Warriors were even at 57 with the Lakers at halftime.

The Warriors played for the 49th time this season without center Andrew Bogut, who has a bone bruise in his sprained left ankle. The Australian big man had offseason microfracture surgery on the same ankle, and coach Mark Jackson wasn't speculating how long the latest injury could keep him out.

Rookie Festus Ezeli took Bogut's starting spot, getting four points and seven rebounds before fouling out.

NOTES: Nash missed his sixth straight game with a strained right hamstring. ... The doctor who performed Bogut's surgery will examine the results of Bogut's MRI exam in the next few days. ... Denzel Washington, Rick Fox, 50 Cent and Tenacious D members Jack Black and Kyle Gass watched near courtside.

THE FACTS: The Lakers won the game they needed to Friday night, but they likely lost so much more. Kobe Bryant fell to the court with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter, clutching his left calf in pain. He struggled to the bench, returned to make a pair of free throws to tie the score, but then hobbled to the locker room, unable to witness his team's 118-116 victory over the visiting Warriors. Afterward, the celebration was muted even further went it was announced Bryant likely suffered a season-ending tear in his Achilles tendon, by far the most serious injury of his 17-year career.

QUOTABLE: "I made a move I've made a million times, and (the Achilles) just popped."

THE STAT: With two games to go, the Lakers maintained their one-game lead over the Jazz with the victory. Without the services of Bryant, however, the Lakers likely won't go far if they do make the postseason. Bryant will have the injury officially diagnosed with an MRI on Saturday.

TURNING POINT: The Lakers rallied from a nine-point deficit with 6:48 remaining. Bryant sank back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the score at 107 with 3:46 left but those would be his final baskets as he fell to the court while driving to the basket. After he tied the score with his free throws, it was left up to his teammates and they came through. Pau Gasol scored on a spin move and Dwight Howard hammered in a dunk for a 115-113 lead. Klay Thompson hit a 3-pointer out of a timeout to put the Warriors back ahead 116-115. Steve Blake made two free throws with 42.2 seconds remaining to put the Lakers back out front, 117-116. After a turnover by Golden State and a miss by Gasol in close, Carl Landry missed a 17-footer with two seconds left. Howard grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made one of two free throws with 1.5 on the clock. Stephen Curry then launched a full-court heave that caromed off the front of the rim as time expired.

HOT: The injury to Bryant overshadowed a remarkable night for Curry and Gasol. Curry finished with 47 points, shooting 9-for-15 from 3-point range, while also leading the Warriors with nine assists and three steals. Gasol finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the fourth triple-double of his career. On any other night, those performances and the L.A. victory would be the main topic of conversation, but not on this night.

QUOTABLE III: "I hate it for Kobe, I hate it for us, I hate it for L.A., but we have three guys out there that are pretty good."

NOT: Just before Bryant's injury, Golden State forward David Lee had three good opportunities to extend the lead but missed all three field-goal attempts. Up until that point, he was 8-for-9 from the floor. Lakers reserve forward Antawn Jamison, who has been dealing with a painful right wrist injury, missed all four of his field-goal attempts and went scoreless for the first time since Jan. 4.

GOOD MOVE: The move was vintage Bryant, and showed just how youthful he had been playing lately. In the first quarter, he put a crossover move on Thompson that was so quick, it caused Thompson to fall to the floor while Bryant pulled up to sink a 3-pointer.

BAD MOVE: Bryant came into the game averaging 45.7 minutes over his previous six games and was about to enter his 45th minute against the Warriors when he went down with the injury. In the coming days, there will likely be much speculation that the overexertion led to the physical breakdown. The Lakers can also look back at the poor start to the season that forced Bryant to play to his limit when L.A. should have been safely in the playoffs.

NOTABLE: Curry had 22 points in the first quarter, matching the highest-scoring quarter by a Lakers opponent this season. Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks also scored 22 against the visiting Lakers back in December.
