(AP) - Ty Lawson goes down with a torn right heel, the Denver Nuggets keep right on winning. Danilo Gallinari tears an ACL, they don't miss a beat.

The starless but selfless Nuggets have four chances left to set a franchise record with their 55th win, starting at Dallas on Friday night, before they try to parlay their deep roster into a deep playoff run.

The Mavericks won't be joining Denver in the postseason, missing out for the first time since 2000 - when Dirk Nowitzki was a baby-faced kid barely old enough to drink.

Although Gallinari is out for the season after injuring his left knee last week, Lawson hopes to return this weekend to test out his pain threshold and knock off some rust.

The Nuggets (54-24) hardly missed their top two scorers Wednesday night when they set a franchise record with their 21st straight home win, 96-86 over San Antonio.

The Nuggets are heading to the playoffs for the 10th straight season, but this time they're going there without a headliner.

That's not a bad thing.

After all, they were first-round fodder in all but one of those previous nine trips.

Without a go-to superstar, this year's Nuggets have none of that same star power that they once had but much more moxie built around unselfish ball movement and a philosophy of racing up and down the court to capitalize on young legs and high altitude.

Denver is an NBA-best 36-3 at home and hosts Portland on Sunday and Phoenix next week as the Nuggets seek yet another franchise mark for most home wins in a season since joining the NBA 37 years ago. Denver went 36-5 at home in 1976-77.

Rick Carlisle, whose Mavericks lost to the Nuggets in the second round in the 2009 playoffs, said the transformation in Denver has been extraordinary.

"It's quite a different team that's been put together in a different way. They've been very smart in the way they've done it. It's a strength-in-numbers type of outfit, a lot of depth, a lot of playmakers, a lot of speed, a lot of skill. ... With homecourt in the playoffs, they're going to be extremely dangerous."

The Nuggets are clinging to the third seed in the West, a game ahead of the Grizzlies and two ahead of the Clippers.

"That's the main goal, to get the No. 3 seed and get the home-court advantage going into the playoffs," said Wilson Chandler, who scored 29 against the Spurs.

Things didn't go so well for the Mavericks (38-40) on Wednesday night.

A 102-91 home loss to lowly Phoenix, which snapped a 10-game skid, put them on the brink of postseason elimination. The Lakers finished Dallas off a couple of hours later by beating Portland.

Just two years removed from the franchise's first championship, the Mavericks simply never recovered from Nowitzki missing the first 27 games after the first knee surgery of his career.

"We're going to try to win the next game to get this to .500," said Nowitzki, about to finish his 15th NBA season. "We'd love to finish with a positive record. That means something and we're going to fight for it."

The Mavericks will go into their third straight offseason of uncertainty after back-to-back seasons of teams filled with one-year or expiring contracts.

When Deron Williams spurned the Mavericks in free agency and Jason Kidd picked New York after saying he would return to Dallas, the Mavericks brought in Darren Collison, O.J. Mayo, Chris Kaman and Elton Brand. Vince Carter was back for a second year.

The Mavericks felt pretty good about their Plan B but figured on having Nowitzki the entire time. Instead, they essentially were without him for half the season because it took him another 10 games to find anything resembling a groove after his right knee simply couldn't make it through training camp.

"There's a lot of observations that can be made about this team," Carlisle said. "But I think the truth is, we're a team with parts that fit together a certain way. The collective disposition, the collective will, the collective understanding of each other. They've got to be there for us to play at our best. There have been times where really good shot making nights have been a deodorant for other flaws."

Nowitzki, Mayo lead Mavs past Denver 108-105 in OT

DALLAS (AP) O.J. Mayo had Denver beat with a tie-breaking 3-pointer late in regulation.

The mistake-prone Dallas guard gave the Nuggets another chance to set a franchise record in wins with a turnover in the final seconds, so he had to hit another go-ahead shot from long range in overtime.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 22, Mayo overcame his huge mistake with his first 20-point game in more than a month, and the Mavericks denied the Nuggets their 55th win with a 108-105 overtime victory on Friday night.

The Mavericks were up by two when they inbounded to Mayo - their turnover leader this year - with 10 seconds left in regulation. He tried to dribble through traffic but lost the ball to Andre Miller, who found Corey Brewer for a tying layup with 3.9 seconds remaining.

"You've just got to understand there's still more game left," said Mayo, who surprisingly got all the way to rim after the bucket by Brewer but missed a layup at the buzzer. "You can't really sit there and dwell on turning the ball over. They made the play at the end, and I thought we made more plays in overtime to get the win."

Mayo scored the first five Dallas points in the extra period, including a 3-pointer from the left wing for a 104-101 Dallas lead with 2:40 remaining. The Mavericks, playing two nights after getting eliminated from the playoff race for the first time since 2000, then held on in a frantic final minute.

Mayo was 5 of 7 from long range and finished with 20 points, his most since scoring 22 against Detroit on March 8. Vince Carter had 22 points and a season-high 12 rebounds.

Brewer, Wilson Chandler and Andre Iguodala led the Nuggets with 18 points apiece, and Kenneth Faried had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss kept Denver at 54 wins, which the Nuggets have reached twice previously. The last time was with Carmelo Anthony leading the way in 2008-09, when the Nuggets beat the Mavericks in five games in the second round of the playoffs.

The Nuggets lost their last chance to finish as the No. 2 seed and will remain in a battle for home court in the first round with Memphis and the Los Angeles Clippers over their final three games.

"I'm not going to overreact to anything other than we have three games left," Denver coach George Karl said. "I think we all want third. But if we get fourth or fifth, we've had a helluva year and we'll get ready to go play in the playoffs."

While the Mavericks will miss the postseason for the first time since Nowitzki's second year, they can get back to .500 for the first time since December with a win Sunday at New Orleans. That would also mean the bearded German and several Dallas veterans can shave after vowing two months ago not to do it until they reached the break-even mark.

"Honestly, I try to play the end of the season out strong and win the next game for coach," said Nowitzki, who scored 16 in the first half. "Once I go out there, it's fun. I try to win and go out there and compete."

Dallas was nursing a 106-105 lead when Brewer was called for a foul on Nowitzki with 0.5 seconds on the shot clock and 6.1 seconds left in the game. The Mavericks threw a long inbound pass to Darren Collison, who avoided being fouled until there were just 1.9 seconds left.

Collison hit both free throws and Iguodala was short on a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"It's amazing," Karl said after a long pause when asked about the foul call against Brewer. "There are a lot of things about that game. We didn't get a foul call that whole third quarter. We were driving to the basket on almost every possession. Not one foul."

Denver point guard Ty Lawson returned after missing five games with a right plantar fasciitis tear, but didn't play half of the fourth quarter and overtime because he was limited to 20 minutes. He scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and finished 13.

"I got three weeks of rest, but I've got to get back into game shape," Lawson said. "I didn't feel like I was tired out there or anything, but I need to get back to teammates getting used to me. They've been playing a different style since I've been out."

After Mayo put Dallas ahead 99-96 with a 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation, Miller was fouled on a drive and the referees ruled goaltending against Brandan Wright before overturning the call on video review.

Miller missed the second free throw, and Mayo found Wright, who was fouled as he barely missed a layup. Wright missed both free throws, but Iguodala, who hit a game-winning layup to beat the Mavericks in Denver and was coming off a triple-double against San Antonio, missed a contested jumper before Mayo's turnover gave Denver another chance to tie.

NOTES: Nowitzki finished 10 points shy of 25,000 for his career. He should become the 17th NBA player to reach the milestone Sunday at New Orleans. Jerry West is 16th at 25,192 points. Nowitzki is third among active players behind Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. ... The Nuggets won all five games that Lawson, their leading scorer, missed with his foot problem. That included almost three full games without Danilo Gallinari, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee early in a home game against the Mavericks last week. Gallinari had a career-high 39 points at Dallas in December. Mavericks C Elton Brand returned after missing four games with a strained right calf.

THE FACTS: For a team in the rare position of having nothing to play for, the Dallas Mavericks played spoiler and pulled out a 108-105 overtime victory Friday against the Denver Nuggets at the American Airlines Center.

Vince Carter and Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points each and O.J. Mayo added 20 for the Mavericks (39-40), who are missing the postseason for the first time since 2000.

Dallas denied Denver (54-25) a chance to break the team's season record for wins and snapped the Nuggets' five-game winning streak. Andre Iguodala, Wilson Chandler and Corey Brewer scored 18 points each for Denver, which is battling for the No. 3 seed in the West. Iguodala had a chance to send it to a second overtime, but his 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short.

QUOTABLE: "Us not making the playoffs doesn't mean we can't lay it all out there and fight to the end. We did it for our fans and our organization. Each individual knew we were going to lay it out there for each other and for the good of the team, and it starts with the old guys. The old guys are still playing big minutes and battling."

THE STAT: The Mavericks have now had at least two 20-point scorers in each of their last four games. Dallas is 15-5 this season when two or more score at least 20.

TURNING POINT: After an Andre Miller layup gave Denver the first lead in the extra session, Mayo tied it with a running jumper and gave Dallas the lead for good with a 3-pointer at the 2:40 mark. Mayo finished 5-for-7 from behind the arc and the Mavericks improved to 6-1 when he makes at least five 3-pointers.

QUOTABLE II: "We reside in kind of an altered state of zaniness, our team. It's just kind of been that way. It's never easy. It's a bit of an adventure, but they're good guys and they're trying."

HOT: The Mavericks shot 48 percent (11-for-23) from 3-point range. Dallas is 17-6 this season when draining 10 or more triples.

NOT: Miller was 2-for-12 from the field and made four turnovers, none more costly than his fumble with 1:10 left in overtime and Denver trailing 106-103.

GOOD MOVE: Carter was extremely active on the glass at both ends, finishing with a season- and game-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. That included eight offensive boards, matching a career high set on Nov. 5, 2005. He also led the Mavericks with seven assists and blocked two shots.

BAD MOVE: Dallas nearly let the game slip away in regulation with a series of blunders. Leading 99-97 with 21.7 seconds left, Brandan Wright missed two free throws. On the next possession, Mayo had the ball poked away in the backcourt. Then, after Brewer knotted it at 99-99 with a layup with 3.9 seconds left, Mayo missed a finger roll as time expired.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Denver guard Ty Lawson returned after missing eight of the last nine games with a torn plantar fascia in his right foot. He played 19 minutes off the bench and tallied 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting with three assists. Lawson scored Denver's first seven points in the fourth.

QUOTABLE III: "Look, it didn't work out the way we planned. It's all on me and [president of basketball operations] Donnie [Nelson]. Period. End of story. It's our job to put people in position to succeed. We didn't do enough of it."
