Nets-Pacers Preview

Even after the Indiana Pacers pushed the eventual NBA champions in the playoffs last season, few may have expected them - without Danny Granger - to finish ahead of a Brooklyn Nets team that made strong offseason moves.

That can officially become reality Friday night when Indiana looks to clinch the third seed in the Eastern Conference with a victory over visiting Brooklyn.

Indiana had Miami on the ropes in the 2012 East semifinals before bowing out in six games, and it appeared to be one of the biggest threats to the Heat coming into 2012-13.

Then the news came just before the season that the Pacers wouldn't have Granger, their leading scorer the last five years, for at least the first three months because of a knee injury.

Despite Granger playing only five games before opting for surgery, Indiana (49-29) won its first Central Division title since 2003-04 behind All-Star Paul George, who scored 14 points to help the Pacers overcome a 20-point deficit in a 99-94 win over Cleveland on Tuesday.

Coach Frank Vogel's ejection in the third quarter seemed to spark his team. The Pacers were coming off two embarrassing defeats, 97-75 to Oklahoma City last Friday and 104-85 at Washington the following night.

George Hill scored a team-high 27 points to aid the comeback Tuesday.

"We couldn't have three blowouts in a row. We want to close the season out on a good foot," George said. "When coach went out, we really had to pull it together. We knew the fourth quarter is the way we play. We were really struggling."

Brooklyn also is likely headed toward home-court advantage in the first round, one of many goals set by the organization after re-signing Deron Williams, Gerald Wallace, Brook Lopez and Kris Humphries and trading for Joe Johnson.

Williams has been the catalyst as the fourth-place Nets (46-32) have won three straight. He scored 29 points and added 12 assists in a 101-93 win at Boston on Wednesday.

The point guard has averaged 25.5 points and 54.8 percent shooting in his last four games, considerably better than his season numbers of 18.7 and 43.9.

"We say it every game - he's playing like one of, if not the, elite point guards in the league," interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said.

With Johnson still not 100 percent recovered from a strained quadriceps and the team having lost Wallace to a left heel contusion Wednesday, Williams has had to step up his game as the Nets prepare to make their first postseason appearance since 2006-07.

"Whenever two (people are covering) the ball, he makes the right play," reserve Jerry Stackhouse said of Williams. "I think once he mixes it up, it's like pick your poison."

Williams has averaged 28.8 points in his last four games versus the Pacers, though he sat out an 89-84 overtime victory in the most recent meeting Feb. 11. Lopez finished with 25 points and Reggie Evans added 22 rebounds to help overcome 22 points from Hill.

Wallace missed a 97-86 win over Indiana on Jan. 13 because of bruised ribs, and it's uncertain if his injured heel will keep him out of this contest.

Brooklyn has held Indiana to an average of 84.7 points while winning the last three matchups following a 10-game losing streak in the series.

Nets beat Pacers, assured of at least No. 4 seed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Brooklyn Nets want a top-three spot in the Eastern Conference and they're going to do everything they can to get it.

Deron Williams had 33 points and 14 assists to lead the Nets to a 117-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night. They guaranteed themselves the No. 4 seed in the East and pulled within two games of the Pacers for No. 3.

"We could still get the 3 seed," Williams said. "We have to hope for Indiana to lose some games, but it's still possible. I think we have a good thing going right now."

The Pacers (49-30) fell three games behind the New York Knicks for the No. 2 seed.

Brook Lopez and Joe Johnson each had 24 points for the Nets (47-32), who have won four of their last five games.

David West had 26 points and nine rebounds, and Paul George had 21 for the Pacers, who have lost three of four.

The Nets set the tone early and right from the start.

The Pacers took their only lead of the game when Lance Stephenson hit a 3-pointer with 5 minutes left, but the Pacers couldn't hold on.

"We have teams come into our building and really play comfortable," George said. "We want to defend our home court."

Jerry Stackhouse tied the game from the free throw line and the Nets took a 104-101 lead when Johnson hit a 3-pointer.

George hit a 3-pointer of his own to tie it again and Stackhouse hit a 3 to make it 107-104 with 2:56 left.

The Pacers trailed by as much as 24 and couldn't duplicate a similar comeback they had in a win over Cleveland on Tuesday.

The Nets took a 69-50 lead by halftime, the most points they scored in a half this season and the most given up by Indiana.

Williams had 25 points in the half, including four 3-pointers.

"I just got free a couple times and I hit a couple of baskets and started feeling it," he said.

Added interim coach P.J. Carlesimo: "I thought he played unbelievably well. He just played great and, as usual, he played good defense."

The Nets took a 21-point lead late in the second quarter when Johnson hit a 3-pointer and Williams hit back-to-back 3s to make it 67-46 with 1:02 left.

"Clearly we have to have a sense of urgency at the start of the game," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "We are battling back, but we have to play with that sense of urgency in the first quarter."

The Nets shot 71.4 percent in the first quarter alone. The Pacers shot over 50 percent but couldn't keep up.

When it wasn't Williams, it was Lopez, who had 16 points in the first half on 7-of-8 shooting. Johnson had 11 points by halftime on 5-of-7 shooting.

Johnson and Lopez put together an 8-2 run for the Nets midway through the first quarter to take a 22-12 lead with 4:29 left in the first quarter.

The Nets opened a 74-52 lead early in the second half before the Pacers slowly chipped away and took the lead late.

Vogel said before the game the Pacers haven't taken their eyes off that No. 2 spot. But it's a tough stretch for the remainder of the regular season, especially after dropping Friday's game.

"I think as a group we should be very concerned," West said. "We're not showing the ability to play complete games and at this time of year we should be focusing on tweaks we're going to make as the year comes to a close."

The Pacers go on the road to New York on Sunday and Boston Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season at home against Philadelphia.

THE FACTS: With the fourth seed secured, the Nets can start reaching for the next rung on the Eastern Conference Playoff ladder. After blowing a 24-point lead, then rallying to pull out a 117-109 victory Friday in Indiana, Brooklyn (47-32) clinched homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs and moved two games back of the No. 3 Pacers (49-30). Because the Nets swept the season series, they'd hold the tie-breaker over Indiana. Brooklyn's final three games are against lottery teams, while the Pacers face the Knicks and Celtics before closing the season against Philadelphia. While the Nets have surged to four straight wins, the Pacers have dropped three of four -- and needed to come back from a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Cleveland Tuesday. Deron Williams scored 33 to lead the Nets but limped out late in the game after banging knees with Paul George. Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez scored 24 apiece. David West scored 26 and George 21 for Indiana.

THE STAT: In the game's first 26 minutes, Williams shot 10-for-16 and scored 30 points. But Indiana coach Frank Vogel switched defensive assigments, putting George on Williams and the Nets guard missed his final seven field goal attempts went scoreless for more than 21 minutes before making three free throws in the final minute to help close the door.

TURNING POINT: With Williams scoring 25 of the Nets' 31 points, Brooklyn stretched a three-point lead midway through the second period to 24 early in the third quarter. George Hill helped spark another big second-half rally by Indiana, scoring 11 in a 29-9 run that cut the deficit to 85-81. A Lance Stephenson 3-pointer capped a 14-3 run in the fourth quarter to give Indiana its first lead of the game, 101-99, but it would also be the Pacers' last lead. Indiana came up empty on six of its next seven possessions as the Nets put together a 14-3 run to regain control.

Kris Humphries picked up a technical foul for arguing a no-call with 8:59 left in the second quarter. ...
