Suns-Mavericks Preview

While the odds are against them, the Dallas Mavericks are still alive in the Western Conference playoff race.

A matchup against the struggling Phoenix Suns should only help their chances.

The Mavericks go for a four-game season sweep and 11th consecutive home win over the Suns, who try to avoid an 11th straight loss Wednesday night.

Occupying 10th place in the West, Dallas (38-39) needs lots of help if it is going to make a 13th consecutive playoff appearance. The Mavericks sit 2 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final playoff spot with five to go.

"It's important for us to finish the season on a good note and we have the next five games to do that," center Chris Kaman said.

Dallas returns home seeking a third consecutive victory after winning 96-91 at Portland on Sunday. Kaman led the way with a season-high 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Shawn Marion scored 20 on 10-of-14 shooting.

The Mavericks, though, had to sweat things out after their 26-point lead was cut to three with 39 seconds left.

"It is what it is, man. We came out victorious and every win counts right now. Period," Marion said. "As long as you get the W at this time, we need it. We're going to see what happens with the race to the finish line with the playoffs, but we're one more game away from being .500."

Dallas played the entire fourth quarter without Dirk Nowitzki, who was held out due to a sore foot but says he'll suit up Wednesday.

"I'll be fine," he said. "We've got five games left and a huge chance to see .500 for the first time since probably December, so I'll definitely play."

The Mavericks surely like their chances of getting back to the break-even mark for the first time since mid-December with Phoenix (23-55) coming to town. The Suns, losers in 11 of 12 in this series, have been outscored by an average of 12.3 points during a 10-game skid at Dallas.

Phoenix's 10-game losing streak overall is its longest since dropping a franchise-worst 13 in a row to open 1996-97. The Suns are 2-16 since losing Marcin Gortat to a foot injury March 6, including a loss that night.

Sitting at the bottom of the West, Phoenix saw its woes continue Tuesday in a 101-98 defeat at Houston. The Suns went toe-to-toe with the playoff-bound Rockets but would lose when Jermaine O'Neal was called for goaltending on James Harden's last-second 3-pointer.

Harden's shot bounced high off the rim, and O'Neal tipped the ball as it came down just after the buzzer sounded.

"I've never seen a game finish in a weirder way," said O'Neal, who shot 2 for 12.

Luis Scola had 28 points and Goran Dragic added 15 with 10 assists for the Suns, whose last three defeats have been by a combined 10 points.

"We can deal with these losses, it's the blowout ones that we play selfish and don't play together, and those are the ones that are frustrating," forward Jared Dudley said.

The Suns will be looking to add to O.J. Mayo's recent struggles. Averaging 15.8 points, Mayo has posted just 7.8 per game on 31.7 percent shooting over the last six. He has, however, scored at least 20 in two of three matchups against Phoenix this season.

Suns beat Mavs to set up playoff elimination

DALLAS (AP) Dirk Nowitzki knew the end of a 12-season playoff streak was coming. Phoenix's P.J. Tucker hastened the arrival.

Tucker scored 17 points, including two big baskets to stop a Dallas rally in the closing minutes, and the Suns helped eliminate the Dallas Mavericks from postseason contention with a 102-91 victory Wednesday night.

Dallas was officially out a couple of hours later, when the Los Angeles Lakers beat Portland 113-106. It's the first time the Mavericks (38-40) have finished outside the top eight in the Western Conference since 2000.

Nowitzki was a second-year pro the last time the Mavericks were home for the postseason. He was left to wait to see what happened later Wednesday with the Lakers' game in Portland.

"I mean, it didn't look good for two or three weeks," said Nowitzki, who had 21 points but was just 6 of 18 from the field. "It's not like we had unbelievable high hopes for it. It's not like our hopes were crushed tonight."

The Suns blew a 14-point lead in the first quarter and almost did it again in the fourth before hanging on to snap their longest losing streak in 16 years.

Phoenix led 85-71 early in the fourth quarter but was up by just four when Tucker put in a layup for a six-point lead after a shot by Luis Scola barely touched the rim as the shot clock expired.

Tucker, who also had 10 rebounds, grabbed a miss by O.J. Mayo on the other end, then hit a 3-pointer for a 98-89 lead with 1:01 remaining. Tucker, a 26 percent shooter from long range this season, was 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.

"We needed to score right there. We needed to answer back," Tucker said. "I got like three or four of them I should have had before that and didn't get them, so that one was huge."

Goran Dragic led the Suns with 21 points and 13 assists, while Scola had 11 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.

Phoenix, playing a night after losing at the buzzer in Houston when Jermaine O'Neal was called for goaltending on a tiebreaking 3-pointer by James Harden, also snapped a 10-game skid in Dallas dating to March 2007.

"I guess we underestimated them tonight and they came in here and got a win," said Shawn Marion, who led Dallas with 22 points and nine rebounds.

Phoenix took the lead for good with an 18-4 run in the third quarter. Dragic started it with a 3-pointer to break a 63-all tie, then had assists on a layup by Tucker and a 3-pointer from Markieff Morris.

The Mavericks went almost 5 minutes without a basket in the third quarter and another 4 minutes to start the fourth before Mayo hit a long jumper, but Phoenix pushed the lead back to 12 with help from free throws by Dragic after Mayo was called for a flagrant foul for throwing his shoulder into the Suns guard when he was driving.

Dallas shot 27 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter.

"Every time we've had a chance, we've laid an egg. Just not good enough," Nowitzki said. "This is a game we needed to have. We were the team that looked like we were on a back-to-back, not them. A terrible, terrible, disappointing loss."

The Suns led 51-41 at halftime after being up by 14 in the first quarter, but Dallas started the second half with a 12-2 run to get even.

Wesley Johnson scored 15 points in the second quarter to help the Suns rebuild a double-digit lead they lost when Vince Carter sparked a 12-0 Dallas run with a one-handed dunk off a miss by Nowitzki, who was 0 of 5 in the first quarter and took some practice shots before going to the bench at the end of the period.

Johnson, who didn't score in the second half, was 3 of 4 from 3-point range in the first half and the Suns, 29th in the NBA in 3-point shooting at 33 percent coming in, went 6 of 9 from beyond the arc in the second quarter.

Dragic had 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the first quarter to build the Phoenix lead, and the Suns' starting backcourt of Dragic and Johnson outscored Dallas starters Mike James and Mayo 33-8 in the first half, which ended with Phoenix leading 61-51.

"I think we gave a team that was playing for nothing life at the beginning," Carter said. "It was tough to break their rhythm after that."

NOTES: Dallas coach Rick Carlisle got a first-quarter technical when C Chris Kaman was called for a foul after knocking over Dragic at midcourt when a dribbling Dragic stopped in front of him. Carlisle stepped onto the court to complain about the call, drawing a puzzled look from Dragic. ... Mavericks C Elton Brand missed his fourth straight game with a sore right calf, and Suns F Michael Beasley missed his second straight for the birth of his daughter in Phoenix. ... There was a brief delay in the fourth quarter when the scoreboards, game clocks and shot clocks went blank or reset. Turned out there was 4:20 remaining.

THE FACTS: The Phoenix Suns halted a 10-game losing streak, ended a six-year drought in Dallas and crushed the Dallas Mavericks' faint playoff hopes with a 102-91 victory Wednesday at the American Airlines Center.

Double-doubles by Goran Dragic (21 points, 13 assists), Luis Scola (11 points, 15 rebounds) and P.J. Tucker (17 points, 10 boards) and a season-high seven blocks by Jermaine O'Neal gave the 14-point underdog Suns (24-55) their first win since March 18, their first road victory since Feb. 27 and their first triumph in Dallas since March 14, 2007.

For the Mavericks (38-40) to somehow claim the eighth seed in the Western Conference, they would have to win their last four games and both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz would have to lose the remainder of their games. The Lakers defeated the Trail Blazers on Wednesday night, so the Mavs will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2000.

THE STAT: Phoenix came in averaging 5.7 made 3-pointers. The Suns were 9-for-16 in the first half and 12-for-27 for the game from behind the arc.

TURNING POINT: Dallas wiped out a 13-point deficit in the first half and erased a 14-point hole early in the second half, but the third time was the charm for Phoenix. The Suns opened up an 85-71 lead in the fourth quarter. Dallas pulled to within 93-89 on a jumper by Dirk Nowitzki with 2:03 to play. Tucker answered with a putback and then drained the dagger 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining.

QUOTABLE II: "It's disappointing because it was just another opportunity lost to get back to even, as far as our record. We're just not good enough from start to finish. ... Dragic was the best player on the floor. He shredded us from the start of the game to the end."

HOT: During the first half, the Suns' starting backcourt of Dragic and Wesley Johnson were a combined 13-for-17 (6-for-8 from 3-point range) for 33 points, 10 assists, five rebounds, two steals and just two turnovers.

NOT: The Suns shot 23.8 percent (5-for-21) and the Mavericks shot 27.3 percent (6-for-22) during a brick-filled fourth quarter. ... Nowitzki was 4-for-4 from the field in the second quarter, but 2-for-14 the rest of the night.

BAD MOVE: Dallas had a chance to reach the .500 mark for the first time since it was 11-11 on Dec. 12. That would have allowed Nowitzki (21 points, eight rebounds), Vince Carter (18 points), O.J. Mayo (2-for-10 with four turnovers), Chris Kaman (1-for-6) to shave the beards they have been growing since early February. They pledged to keep the caveman look until the team reached .500.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Mavericks forward Shawn Marion finished with team highs in points (22), rebounds (nine) and steals (three) against his former team. He has scored 20-plus points in three consecutive games for the first time since February 2007.

ROOKIE WATCH: Dallas guard Josh Akognon, signed to a 10-day contract on April 3, scored his first NBA points with a second-quarter jumper.

NOTABLE: Dallas had won 10 straight against Phoenix at home. ... Mavericks forward Elton Brand missed his fourth game with a right calf injury. ... Suns forward Michael Beasley missed his second game to be with his newborn daughter and is expected to rejoin the team Saturday in Minnesota. ... Nowitzki (24,968) needs 32 points to become the 17th player in NBA history with 25,000 points. ... Brandan Wright had five blocks for the Mavericks. ... Carter has made at least one 3-pointer in a career-best 21 consecutive games.
