Nets-Celtics Preview

It's been well over three months since the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics met, but extra intensity can still be expected when these teams close their season series.

The Nets are closing in on home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs and can capture the season series for the first time since 2005-06 with a victory Wednesday night on the road against the Celtics.

Brooklyn (45-32) won two meetings with Boston (40-37) in November, with three ejections taking place in the second one. These teams then met Dec. 25, but there was little Christmas cheer on display with a skirmish in the fourth quarter that featured four technical fouls in the Celtics' 93-76 victory.

"You kind of feel some sort of chippiness between the two teams to be honest with you when we match up against Brooklyn," Boston forward Paul Pierce said.

The team that has won the rebounding battle has won all three matchups, and the Celtics are wary of Brooklyn frontcourt players Reggie Evans, Andray Blatche and Brook Lopez. That trio has combined for 75 rebounds in the season series.

"They're a big basketball team, Lopez is a monster so that's the challenge," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "And they are physical, they are tough, they're veterans - they match us in that. So usually those are the type of games that are fun. I don't call them chippy, I call them fun."

Lopez and Evans keyed a 104-83 home victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday. Lopez had 29 points and 11 boards while Evans finished with 17 and 24 - two shy of his career high - as the Nets held a 67-34 cushion on the glass.

"It isn't all about the way you look, how tall you are, how physical you look," Evans said. "It's all about that heart. I'd rather play a physical game than a pretty game. The more physical, the better it is. I like contact. I don't like running away."

The Nets, who took three of four from Boston seven seasons ago, lead Chicago by three games for home-court advantage in the first round.

The Celtics lead Milwaukee by three games as they try to cement the No. 7 seed in the postseason and avoid a first-round meeting with Miami. They are 1 1/2 games behind sixth-place Atlanta and two in back of the Bulls.

Brooklyn coach P.J. Carlesimo rested all of his starters for the fourth quarter Tuesday, with this matchup in mind. The Nets are 6-5 in the second half of a back-to-back set after the first game was at home.

Deron Williams was only needed to score 11 points after totaling 62 over his previous two games for Brooklyn.

"The way they have been playing, they are one of the top-four teams in the East," Pierce said. "Deron Williams is playing his best basketball right now."

Unlike the previous matchups, Williams won't have to deal with the currently injured Rajon Rondo. He could see time against defensive-minded guard Avery Bradley, who missed the first two months of the season with shoulder problems.

Williams carries Nets to 101-93 win over Celtics

BOSTON (AP) Comfortable and in control, Deron Williams was more than the Boston Celtics could handle.

Williams had 29 points and 12 assists to lead the Brooklyn Nets to a 101-93 victory over the Celtics on Wednesday night.

"Very comfortable," Williams said when asked how he was feeling on the floor. "I was able to attack the rim a lot and get to the free throw line 10 times. That helps build confidence, getting to the free throw line and knocking them down."

Brook Lopez scored 21 points and Joe Johnson added 20 for Brooklyn, which won for the 12th time in 18 games overall and beat the Celtics for the third time in four meetings this season.

Williams went 10 for 10 from the free throw line.

"I think we had good space and gave him room to operate," teammate Jerry Stackhouse said. "Whenever two (people were covering) the ball, he makes the right play. I think once he mixes it up, it's like pick your poison. A lot of times they allowed him to play 1-on-1 and he took advantage of it."

With the victory, the Nets moved closer to wrapping up fourth place in the Eastern Conference and clinching home-court advantage in the first round. Brooklyn owns a 3 1/2-game edge over idle Chicago with four games left to play in the regular season.

And if Williams continues to play like he did on Wednesday, the Nets will be very tough in the playoffs.

"We say it every game, he's playing like one of, if not, the elite point guards in the league," interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said.

Paul Pierce led Boston with 23 points, Jeff Green added 11 and Kevin Garnett had 11 points and eight rebounds in his second game back after missing the previous eight with an inflamed left ankle.

Boston coach Doc Rivers clearly saw a Nets team that was aggressive offensively, especially when his best defending guard, Avery Bradley, got in foul trouble.

"It's no coincidence that when Avery went off the floor, Deron Williams got ultra-aggressive," Rivers said. "I give Deron a lot of credit; when Avery picked up that first foul he attacked him."

The Celtics, who have dropped four of six, remained three games ahead of Milwaukee for the East's seventh playoff spot, but fell 2 1/2 games behind sixth-place Atlanta, which beat Philadelphia 124-101.

"I think we're focusing too much on the playoffs, and that's not here yet," Garnett said. "I think we need to focus and lock in on these games that we have left and put the energy and effort behind that."

Pierce felt the Nets were the more eager team.

"They came in with a better sense of urgency like the playoffs are around the corner, and we sort of eased into it," he said.

Garnett got a technical in the second quarter and tangled up Kris Humphries for a jump ball that had the Celtics star rolling over the Nets' forward midway into the fourth.

Earlier this season, Rajon Rondo and Humphries were ejected for scuffling under a basket and into the first row of seats after the Nets' big man knocked Garnett to the floor with a hard foul.

The Nets pushed a 10-point halftime lead to 60-45 on Stackhouse's jumper from the right baseline before Boston started to get some production offensively - mainly from Pierce. After missing six of their initial seven shots in the second half, the Celtics relied on Pierce driving to the basket, where he converted a three-point play and was fouled, hitting five free throws that cut it to 70-62. He had 13 points in the quarter.

But Johnson followed with a 3 from the top, triggering a 7-2 spurt that helped the Nets to a 79-69 lead after three quarters.

The Celtics just had no answer for the penetrating, game-controlling Williams, who made key passes and continually found his way to the basket.

Boston sliced its deficit to nine three times in the opening 6 minutes of the final quarter, but after the last one Williams had a pair of baskets during a game-sealing 8-0 run that had many in the crowd heading for the exits.

Brooklyn hit six from beyond the 3-point line and shot 51.4 percent (19 of 27) in the opening half.

In the opening half, the Nets used a 15-4 run over a five-minute stretch late in the first quarter en route to a 22-21 edge after one. Johnson started the spree by nailing a fadeaway and following Brandon Bass' basket with a 3 from the wing. Boston missed six straight shots during Brooklyn's run.

Then they went on a 18-4 spurt late in the second, turning a two-point deficit into a 12-point lead before Pierce's driving basket in the closing seconds cut it to 53-43 at halftime. Williams had 11 in the quarter, 5 coming in the run.

NOTES: The teams hadn't played since Boston beat the Nets by 17 in Brooklyn on Christmas Day. "It's different," said Carlesimo, who took over two days after that game when Avery Johnson was fired. "They don't have Rondo and KG (Kevin Garnett) is just coming back." ... Garnett passed Hall of Famer John Stockton for sixth on the NBA's career list in minutes played. ... Pierce and Jason Terry both played their 1,100th career game and Brooklyn's Johnson played his 900th. ... It was the first of three straight on the road for the Nets. They play Indiana on Friday and Toronto Sunday before returning home for their final two games of the regular season. ... The Celtics are off until a matchup in Miami against the Heat on Friday. They play at Orlando on Saturday on Saturday night.

THE FACTS: Deron Williams had a game-high 29 points and 12 assists, as the Brooklyn Nets earned a road season sweep of the Boston Celtics with a 101-93 victory. Brook Lopez added 21 points, while Joe Johnson chipped in with 20 in the balanced offensive effort for the visitors, which helped Brooklyn build and maintain a double-digit lead for nearly the entire second half. Paul Pierce had 23 points in the loss, hurting Boston's chances at moving up in the Eastern Conference standings before the postseason. With the win, Brooklyn takes the season series 3-1 over Boston.

QUOTABLE: ""I mean this was a big win for us and I think these next five games we'll be able to tell where we're at too. We've been up and down a lot this season but these last two wins have been something to build on so hopefully we can not take any more steps back and just keep moving forward."

THE STAT: The Nets were the aggressors throughout the entire first half on the offensive end, earning a 10-0 edge in free throw attempts over the opening 24 minutes.

TURNING POINT: Brooklyn broke open the back-and-forth contest in the final minutes of the first half, turning a one-point lead into a double-digit advantage with a 14-3 run. The Celtics were unable to recover from that deficit for the entire second half.

GOOD MOVE: With Avery Bradley saddled with foul trouble for nearly the entire contest, Brooklyn went to their star point guard early and often on the offensive end. Williams took advantage of Boston missing their best backcourt defender by punishing the Celtics' defense with his scoring and passing.

QUOTABLE II: He's playing exceptionally well. He's been as good as any point guard in the league the month and a half, two months after the break. With Joe (Johnson) kind of still rounding back into form from his foot injury, he's carried us. Lot of nights we just let him roll and he's been getting it done for us."

HOT: Pierce. Boston's captain single-handedly kept the Celtics in the game during the third quarter. Pierce scored 13 of his 23 points in the frame, on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and seven trips to the free throw line.

NOT: Jeff Green. The hybrid forward has struggled in his past two games since the return of Kevin Garnett to the starting lineup. Green settled for jumpers early, which failed to go down as he missed 13 of his 17 shot attempts on the evening. Green also struggled to slow down Johnson (20 points) on the defensive end.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Williams. Brooklyn's floor general continued his stellar play during the second half of this season by posting his 20th double-double of the year. In the month of April, Williams is averaging 25 points and 7.9 assists per game.

QUOTABLE III: "I think were focusing on too much of the playoffs that's not here yet. I think we need to focus and lock in on these games that we have left and put the energy and effort behind that. I think were stressing too much on the future, and the futures' not here yet. We need to take this one game at a time and then start to prepare for whatever's after this."

Brandon Bass scored all 10 of his points in the first half. ...The Celtics maintained a three-game lead over the Bucks for the 7th seed despite the loss after Milwaukee fell to Orlando in overtime. ... Brooklyn shot 66.7 percent in the second quarter. ... Reggie Evans finished with 14 rebounds. It was the seventh straight game he has collected 13 or more rebounds.
