Bucks-Heat Preview

The Miami Heat have LeBron James back in uniform, a comfortable cushion in the race for home-court advantage through the NBA finals and are on the verge of tying a franchise record for wins.

Yes, things are looking up in South Beach as the postseason approaches.

In a likely first-round playoff preview, James will make his second straight start Tuesday night after sitting out three games with a tight right hamstring when the Heat host the Milwaukee Bucks, who clinched their own postseason berth in their last outing.

The three-time MVP was anything but rusty in leading Miami to its 60th win Saturday night, 106-87 over Philadelphia. James scored 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting in 31 minutes, maintaining his season-long run of offensive efficiency as the Heat again showed off their ability to win short-handed.

With Dwyane Wade shelved with a sore ankle and bruised knee, and Chris Bosh sitting out with a bad knee of his own, Miami (60-16) moved to 4-1 since having its 27-game winning snapped March 27. In four of those five games, two of the "Big Three" have been sidelined, giving the team's reserves a chance to step up and round into form just in case they're called upon in the playoffs.

"It takes the right type of professional. These guys make it look much easier," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You look at any profession in any field, egos really do become a factor. Are people really willing to sacrifice part of their role or their ego to be part of something special or different? ... They wouldn't. And these guys are very unique. They understand what this opportunity is."

Their opportunity Tuesday is to tie the regular-season mark of 61 wins set by the 1996-97 squad, as well as to put even more distance between them and San Antonio for the league's top record. Miami can extend that lead to four games, after which both teams would only have five games to play.

At the forefront of the Heat's bench charge has been Mike Miller, Rashard Lewis and Chris Andersen. Miller, who hasn't even gotten on the court in 23 games this season, has started the last five, highlighted by a 26-point outburst at Charlotte on Friday night.

Lewis, who had 11 straight DNPs at one point in January, has started three of the last four and scored 14 points off the bench Saturday. Andersen, who didn't even join the club until midseason, had 15 rebounds in a reserve roll last time out.

"The leaders, they come out and do what they have to do and they do it well and the bench just comes in and contributes and we don't step outside our boundaries expect for when I take dumb shots," Andersen said. "It's a matter of our bench. We've got All-Stars sitting all the way down to the end and when we come in and help and get those guys some rest, it just feels great."

Wade has been ruled out of this contest and will miss his fifth straight game. Bosh, on the other hand, is day-to-day.

"The most important thing is to be healthy," Wade said. "When I feel it, I'll get back on the court. Obviously, I want to play. I've just got to make sure that I'm right."

Even without Wade, Milwaukee (37-39) will have its work cut out for it, and there's little doubt the Bucks will want to avoid the league's clear-cut finals favorite so early in the playoffs. It can cut Boston's lead to two games for the Eastern Conference's No. 7 seed but will need a lot of help from the Celtics if it's to steer clear of James and Co. in the first round.

"We're going to do everything we can to try and move up because we just want to keep winning games and end the season on a positive note," coach Jim Boylan said. "Whoever we end up playing, we end up playing. Whoever we play against, we're going to go in and compete and play hard. It would be Miami, New York, Indiana, and those are really good teams."

Milwaukee clinched its date for the postseason with a 100-83 win over Toronto on Saturday night.

Heat tie team mark with 61st win, top Bucks 94-83

MIAMI (AP) Dwyane Wade was hurt, Chris Bosh was sick, the Miami Heat missed 15 consecutive 3-point attempts and allowed the Milwaukee Bucks to score 22 points off turnovers.

And the Heat won handily anyway.

So if this was a potential first-round Eastern Conference playoff preview, the Bucks probably didn't enjoy much of what they saw on Tuesday night. LeBron James scored 28 points in 30 minutes, Udonis Haslem had his first double-double of the season and the Heat moved a step closer to wrapping up home-court advantage throughout the NBA playoffs by topping the Bucks 94-83.

"The train keeps on moving," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The Heat tied a franchise single-season record by winning for the 61st time, getting there with five games remaining. Miami needs only one more win or one San Antonio loss to clinch the top overall seed for the entirety of the playoffs. The defending champions (61-16) clinched the top seed in the East long ago, and will more than likely see the Bucks (37-40) when the postseason starts in about a week and a half.

"We've done so many great things this year by just playing the game at a high level, playing for one another," James said. "Along the way, when those accolades come as far as team wins, the streak that we had, we really enjoy it."

Norris Cole and Ray Allen each scored 11 for the Heat, and Haslem finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Wade missed his fifth straight game and seventh in the past nine while dealing with ankle and knee issues, and Bosh sat out his second straight contest, though this time it was flu-like symptoms that left him sidelined, not the sore knee that kept him from participating in Saturday's game against Philadelphia.

Bosh is not expected to accompany Miami for its trip to play in Washington on Wednesday. Wade is traveling with the club, and will be evaluated on Wednesday before the Heat make any determinations on the rotation for the matchup against the Wizards. It's unknown if anyone else will sit to rest any nagging issues, including James, who said he's still working his way back to full strength.

Brandon Jennings scored 30 points for the Bucks, who said they didn't necessarily treat Tuesday as a dress rehearsal for a possible Game 1 in Miami.

"Whenever we play Miami we have two, three guys guarding (James)," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "We didn't do anything unusual tonight. I wasn't looking for anything. We just had a normal kind of game - nothing out of the ordinary for us."

James' highlight of the night came early. Off a turnover, he took a pass from Mario Chalmers, thought about getting the ball to Mike Miller but Monta Eliis got into the passing lane. So James wound up throwing a pass off the backboard to himself - finishing the play with a dunk that had a half-dozen Heat players leap off the bench in unison and crane their necks toward the scoreboard to see the replay.

James finished 11 for 16 from the floor, with seven rebounds and seven assists.

"Monta really outsmarted me so I had to outsmart him too," James said. "I was going to Mike and he kind of played the passing lane, so I had to make an in-flight adjustment."

Miami outrebounded Milwaukee 49-37, and held the Bucks to 37 points after halftime. The Heat lead was only 47-46 at the break, and Jennings opened the second half with a basket to give Milwaukee a one-point lead.

It was also the Bucks' last lead.

"They didn't play very well and they still won by a lot," Milwaukee's Mike Dunleavy said. "So it's not the best result for the Bucks."

The rest of the third quarter was a 24-11 Miami burst, one where they even made a 3-pointer after going more than two full quarters without connecting from beyond the arc. Miller made one on the team's third attempt of the night, about 2 minutes after tipoff, and the Heat - the league's second-best 3-point shooting team this season entering the game - went on to miss their next 15 tries from long range.

When Shane Battier finally made one from the right corner with 7:03 left in the third, he pumped his fist toward the crowd in faux excitement, and James couldn't contain his laughter.

That's also about the time the Heat started to pull away.

James Jones made a 3-pointer to push Miami's lead to 71-59 entering the fourth, and the margin grew to 18 on another 3 from a most unlikely candidate. Chris Andersen - the reserve forward whose last successful 3-point try was in 2009 - connected early in the fourth, the lead was 84-66 and fans soon started heading for the exits.

Other than Jennings, no other Bucks player reached double figures. Jennings shot 10 for 16, while his teammates combined to shoot 23 for 59.

"We weren't able to chip away," Boylan said.

NOTES: Battier jumped center to open the game and actually won the tip. "I take special pride in the intangibles," Battier said. "So when I win a jump ball, it's special. I enjoy it." ... James said after the morning shootaround practice that he intends to take some games off before the playoffs, presumably after Miami wraps up the No. 1 overall seed. ... The Bucks went 1-3 against the Heat this season. ... Jennings got a technical foul late in the first quarter for shoving Andersen after a hard screen. They slapped hands after the play.

THE FACTS: Despite playing without Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat made easy work of the Bucks in a 94-83 victory Tuesday at AmericanAirlines Arena.

LeBron James led the way with 28 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Miami (61-16). Wade sat for a fifth consecutive games because of knee soreness, while Bosh was out after experiencing flu-like symptoms earlier in the day. In their absence, the Heat received strong play from Udonis Haslem, Ray Allen and Norris Cole, who combined for 32 points.

The Heat sent a message to the Bucks (37-40), who they are likely to meet in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Milwaukee currently holds the No. 8 seed, which means a date with the top-seeded Heat. With the victory, the Heat won the regular-season series 3-1. The Bucks were led by Brandon Jennings' 30 points and four assists.

THE STAT: The Heat, often criticized for their lack of rebounding, actually outrebounded the Bucks 49-37. Haslem was the catalyst, pulling down 15 boards.

TURNING POINT: The Heat used a 14-2 run midway through the third quarter to take control.

HOT: Yet another strong game from James, who is still dealing with a sore hamstring. He showed no signs of the injury, especially in the second half when he helped the Heat take control. It was another efficient game, with James shooting 11-for-16 from the field.

NOT: The Bucks acquired J.J. Redick for an offensive spark off the bench, but he shot just 2-for-9 from the field. It will only get tougher for him in the postseason once Wade returns.

GOOD MOVE: The fast start by Haslem was a confidence-booster for the Heat. He scored all 10 of his points in the first quarter. Haslem, who has been criticized for his offensive struggles this season, gave a glimpse of the player who has been a reliable scoring option over the years.

BAD MOVE: The Bucks are going to need big games from their backcourt of Jennings and Monta Ellis if they have any hopes of upsetting the Heat in the postseason. While Jennings was impressive, Ellis was a non-factor.

NOTABLE: Wade is expected to travel with the team to Washington for Wednesday's game although it is unlikely for Bosh. It means he is likely to miss his third straight game ... Haslem started in place of Bosh. ...The Heat improved to 34-4 at home .... Miami's 61 wins are tied for the most in franchise history.
