With six games remaining, the Memphis Grizzlies can't afford to fall further behind in the fight for home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

They should have a good chance to get back on track against the sinking Sacramento Kings.

The Grizzlies look to win for the fifth time in six games and stay within striking distance of a top-four seed Sunday night when the visit the Kings, losers of four straight at home.

Memphis (51-25) had won four in a row before falling 86-84 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Mike Conley scored a team-best 21 points, but missed a potential go-ahead jumper with five seconds left and a layup before the buzzer that would have tied it.

"We executed like we were supposed to, and tried to get a shot up," Conley said of the final sequence. "We tried to get some penetration and see what we can make out of it, but it just didn't work out."

The fifth-place Grizzlies are right behind Denver for the third seed in the West, while the Clippers, the Pacific Division leaders, own the fourth seed.

Memphis, looking for its third win in four road games, can sweep the season series with Sacramento for the first time in the franchise's 17-year history.

The Grizzlies have defeated the Kings (27-49) three times by an average of 18.3 points and won the only meeting at Sacramento 113-81 on Jan. 7.

Conley has averaged 18.8 points in his last five games in this series. The point guard has scored 21.0 per game and made 13 for 28 from 3-point range in his past seven overall.

Center Marc Gasol has totaled 42 points and 22 rebounds in his last two games against the Kings.

Memphis hopes to bounce back offensively after going 3 of 14 from 3-point range and getting held scoreless for the final 2 1/2 minutes Friday.

While they rank near the bottom of the league at 93.7 points per game, the Grizzlies have averaged 109.8 and 50.7 percent shooting in their last eight versus Sacramento.

Continuing that trend might not be too difficult against a Kings team that has allowed 112.3 points during its home skid.

Sacramento gave up 41 points in the second quarter and 99 over the final three periods in dropping its third straight Friday, 117-108 to Dallas.

DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento's leading scorer and rebounder, did not start for the first time this season. He entered in the second quarter and finished with six points in nine minutes.

"There's no details and there's nothing behind it," coach Keith Smart said. "I went with the guys that I thought at that particular time would give us what I was looking for with that team."

While it's uncertain whether he'll return to the starting lineup Sunday, Cousins has totaled 45 points and 19 rebounds in his last two against the Grizzlies.

Teammate Tyreke Evans has stepped up lately, averaging 23.0 points and 54.2 percent shooting in his last three games. He scored 20 in the latest matchup in the series Feb. 12, a 108-101 loss.

The Kings, however, haven't gotten enough big offensive efforts against the Grizzlies this season, as they've managed 83.7 points and 39.3 percent shooting. Memphis ranks near the top of the NBA at 89.8 points allowed per game.

The Grizzlies have won 10 of the last 12 meetings.

Conley carries Grizzlies past Kings, 89-87

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Marc Gasol was scoreless in the fourth quarter. Yet he wound up being the key player for the Memphis Grizzlies, blocking a pair of shots in the final seven seconds to preserve the victory.

Mike Conley scored 25 points, making the go-ahead basket with 30 seconds left and leading the Grizzlies to an 89-87 victory over the struggling Sacramento Kings on Sunday night.

Memphis made some big plays in the game's final minute for its fifth victory in six games. The win gave the Grizzlies a four-game sweep of the Kings for the first time in franchise history.

It should come as no surprise that the Grizzlies won the game at the defensive end. Second in the NBA in fewest points allowed, the Grizzlies held the Kings to just under 36 percent shooting and blocked 12 shots.

The final block, Gasol's fifth of the game, was the most important. With the clock running down, Kings guard Marcus Thornton tried to launch a 3-pointer with 1 second left for the victory, but Gasol stepped up to block the shot. Gasol also blocked a drive to the basket by DeMarcus Cousins with 7 seconds left.

Gasol was on Cousins and made the switch to Thornton, who tried to launch the 25-footer over the Grizzlies 7-foot-1 center.

"He pump faked and I didn't jump," Gasol said. "I'm not much of a jumper anyway. The switch worked out."

Kings coach Keith Smart was hoping the Kings would penetrate on the final play and not go for the game-winning 3-point.

"You have to drive that; you have to turn the ball and go," Smart said. "Marcus needed to turn the corner and get himself into the paint. We didn't need a winner. They were obviously going to switch any pick-and-roll that came together. For that, you take the ball to the basket and try to create something."

Trailing by one point, Conley penetrated the lane and tossed in a runner to give Memphis an 86-85 lead with 30 seconds left.

With a chance to retake the lead, Cousins drove to the basket and Gasol partially blocked his shot, with Pondexter grabbing the rebound.

The emotional Cousins briefly argued that he was fouled, but Gasol said no way.

"I know I got the ball; I got lucky," said Gasol, who also contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds. "Cousins is strong and has a lot of weapons. He can shoot, drive and pass the ball."

Quincey Pondexter tied his career high with 17 points and Tony Allen scored 12 for the Grizzlies, who have five games left and currently are in fifth place in the Western Conference.

The Grizzlies (52-25) have set a franchise record this season for victories and are headed to the postseason for a third straight season and for the sixth time in franchise history.

The Grizzlies are 19-7 following the All-Star break, which is the third-best record in the league. They've also won 23 of their last 32 games since trading away leading scorer Rudy Gay to the Toronto Raptors.

"We're gearing up for the playoffs," Pondexter said. "We're happy with this win. This is the NBA. Getting any win is tough in this league. We executed down the stretch and grinded this one out."

Cousins had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Kings, who have dropped four straight. Isaiah Thomas had 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Toney Douglas scored 14 points and Jimmer Fredette added 13.

"It came down to execution," Kings reserve Chuck Hayes said. "They got a block and Conley hit a floater. You can tell they are getting ready for the playoffs and they are in playoff form."

Cousins, the Kings' leading scorer and rebounder, was back in the starting lineup after being relegated to a reserve Friday night against Dallas, when he had six points in nine minutes. It was the first time in 69 games this season that Cousins wasn't in the starting lineup.

Although no reason was given for the benching, Cousins seemed motivated offensively in the opening quarter, when he had 11 points and four rebounds.

After Memphis took an eight-point lead, the Kings scored seven straight, cutting the margin to 84-83 with 1:25 left on Cousins' two free throws. On the Kings' next possession with the shot clock running down, Cousins hit a 21-footer to give the Kings an 85-84 lead.

After his shot was blocked by Gasol, Cousins fouled Pondexter, who made both free throws for an 88-85 Memphis lead. Thomas scored on a layup for the Kings, but Conley made one of two free throws to make it 89-87.

It was a rough game offensively for Memphis forwards Zach Randolph and Tayshaun Prince. Randolph shot 4 of 13 and had nine points, and Prince shot poorly as well and finished with three points.

Following a subpar second quarter defensively, the Grizzlies returned to what they do best - making it tough for teams to score. Gasol had eight points in the third when the Grizzlies had a 25-20 advantage and took a four-point lead into the fourth.

After a poor opening quarter, the Kings outscored the Grizzlies 28-18 in the second. Fredette scored 10 points and Douglas had eight in the period. Cousins had 11 first-half points, helping the Kings to a 44-43 lead.

Notes: Memphis reserve guards Keyon Dooling and Tony Wroten were back with the team after playing Saturday with the NBA Development League's Reno Bullhorns. Wroten scored 30 points in the final game this season for Reno. ... Cousins shot 5 of 7 in the opening quarter, while the rest of the Kings shot a combined 1 of 12. ... Kings reserve forward Patrick Patterson didn't play due to a sore lower back.

THE FACTS: The Sacramento Kings fought the playoff bound Memphis Grizzlies all the way down to the wire, but eventually lost a heartbreaker 89-87 Sunday.

Mike Conley led the way for the Grizzlies (52-25), finishing with a game-high 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Marc Gasol anchored the post for Memphis, scoring 15 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking five shots, including Marcus Thornton's potential game-winner at the buzzer. Quincy Pondexter provided a big punch off the bench, dropping in 17 points in 23 minutes, while Tony Allen set the tone defensively.

The Kings (27-50) struggled all night to find the basket, shooting just 35.8 percent from the field. DeMarcus Cousins led the way with 22 points and nine rebounds, but played just 30 minutes due to foul trouble. Isaiah Thomas bounced back from a rough first half to scoring 17 of his 18 points after the break. Thomas added eight assists and six rebounds on the night, while Toney Douglas and Jimmer Fredette came off the bench to score a combined 27 points on 8-for-17 shooting.

QUOTABLE: "I got lucky."

THE STAT: The Kings shot 32.6 percent (14-for-43) from the floor in the first half and somehow still led 44-43 going to the break.

TURNING POINT: This game was in doubt all the way up to the moment when Gasol blocked a 3-point attempt by Marcus Thornton as time expired.

QUOTABLE II: "We switched, he couldn't throw it back and then he didn't have much time left to do something else."

HOT: Conley cut through the Kings defense all night. The Kings had no secondary line of defense and Conley took advantage. ... With the Kings struggling to find the basket the entire first half, Kings coach Keith Smart turned to seldom-used Fredette for some offense. The second-year guard out of BYU responded with 10 points on 2-for-4 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 from the line in 10 minutes of action before intermission.

NOT: The four players starting alongside Cousins -- Thomas, Tyreke Evans, John Salmons and Jason Thompson, scored six total points on a combined 1-for-12 from the field in the first half. ... Randolph finished with nine points on 4-for-13 shooting in 36 minutes.

BAD MOVE: Thornton played 31 minutes tonight, scoring just six points on 2-for-13 shooting from the field and 2-for-8 shooting from behind the arc. He probably shouldn't have been the guy with the ball in his hands for the final 5.4 seconds of the game.

NOTABLE: For the first time in the Grizzlies' 18-year franchise history, they swept the Sacramento Kings in the season series. Patrick Patterson was a late scratch for the Kings with a sore back. Pondexter tied his career-high with 17 points.
