Mavericks-Trail Blazers Preview

The Dallas Mavericks are well aware time is running out if they want to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time since 2000, but they seemingly have a favorable schedule down the stretch.

They conclude a four-game road trip Sunday night versus the Portland Trail Blazers, who have lost seven straight and are guaranteed to miss the postseason for a second consecutive year.

The Mavericks (37-39) are three games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the Western Conference's final playoff spot and 2 1/2 back of ninth-place Utah. They dropped the first two games of the trip - a 20-point loss to the Lakers on Tuesday and Thursday's last-second defeat at Denver - before winning 117-108 in Sacramento on Friday.

"We're playing game to game and trying to win every one and give ourselves a chance," coach Rick Carlisle said. "This is a prideful group of guys. We want to finish this season on an uptick."

Shawn Marion came up with 25 points and 12 rebounds Friday after averaging 8.2 and 5.8, respectively, over the previous five games.

While Los Angeles faces four teams currently in playoff position over its final six games and the Jazz play three over their final five, the Mavericks seemingly have an easier road. Following Sunday's contest, they have home games against West-worst Phoenix and a Denver team that just lost Danilo Gallinari for the season to an ACL tear.

Dallas then plays two of its final three versus 50-loss New Orleans, with a matchup against Memphis in between.

Dirk Nowitzki said the team has been through a lot of difficult times this season in its quest for a 13th consecutive postseason berth.

"We've had numerous and numerous and numerous tough losses this year - one-point possessions down the stretch where the game could have gone either way - and we lost our fair share of them," Nowitzki said. "But somehow we always get back up. ... We always come back the next day and compete. That's really all you can ask for."

O.J. Mayo is averaging only 8.0 points and shooting 33.3 percent over his last five games, but he's averaged 25.0 points while shooting 68.3 percent as Dallas has won two of three versus Portland this season.

The Blazers (33-43) have lost by an average of 17.3 points during their seven-game skid and are on the verge of their longest losing streak since dropping the final eight games of the 2005-06 season.

They fell 116-98 to Houston on Friday in the second game of a five-game homestand, officially eliminating them from playoff contention.

"It's definitely a downer. To have a losing streak at this time of the year and playing against playoff teams, it's a difficult task," coach Terry Stotts said. "In general, I've found that most players bounce back pretty well and we'll bounce back Sunday."

Wesley Matthews scored 18 points and said he intended to talk to the team regarding the recent efforts.

"It's not even about (the playoffs)," Matthews said. "We've got to play like this is the blessing it is."

LaMarcus Aldridge was the major bright spot, scoring 32 points and grabbing 13 rebounds after missing the previous four games with a right ankle sprain. He doesn't believe the recent swoon is due to a lack of effort.

"I don't think I question anyone playing hard," said Aldridge, averaging 26.8 points and 10.8 boards in his last five versus Dallas. "I definitely want guys to play a lot smarter out there."

Mavericks hold on for 96-91 win over Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Those beards aren't coming off yet.

Chris Kaman scored a season-high 26 points and the unshaven Dallas Mavericks boosted their faint playoff hopes with a 96-91 victory over the slumping Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

Kaman added 11 rebounds for the Mavericks, who were 2 1/2 games back of Utah for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference, and two games behind the Lakers. Dallas (38-39) has just five games left, but four of those are at home.

Led by veteran Dirk Nowitzki, a handful of the Mavs have been growing out their beards since early February, vowing not to shave until they reach .500 and make the playoffs. Kaman is among them.

"I'm not sure how excited everyone else is about it because I don't think they like how it looks," he said. "But I'm not really thinking about it because it's important for us to finish the season on a good note and we have the next five games to do that."

After the game, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said he held Nowitzki out of the fourth quarter because of a sore foot. Nowitzki said it wasn't serious and he would play Wednesday when the Mavericks host Phoenix

"We just felt like, either way, it was more important to keep him out," Carlisle said.

The Mavs led by as many as 26 points, but the Blazers closed the gap in the fourth quarter - even after sitting most of their starters.

Rookie Will Barton came off the bench with 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Blazers, who have lost eight straight for their longest losing streak since the 2005-06 season. Portland (33-44) was eliminated from the playoffs after Friday night's 116-98 loss to the Houston Rockets.

Rookie Damian Lillard's layup narrowed Dallas' lead to 88-80 with 4:48 left. The Blazers pulled closer at 88-83 on Barton's jumper.

O.J. Mayo and Shawn Marion had consecutive baskets to slow Portland's momentum, but Eric Maynor's layup and a pair of free throws got the Blazers within 94-91 with 39 seconds left.

After Mayo missed a 3-pointer on the other end, Lillard's attempted layup with 6.9 seconds to go didn't fall. Marion scored at the buzzer for the final margin.

"We're one of those teams that lets other teams back in so it was kind of frustrating, but we're lucky there wasn't much time left on the clock because I think it might have been a different game," Kaman said.

Barton's breakout performance had the Blazers in an upbeat mood following the game, despite the loss. Barton had 18 points and 11 rebounds in the second half alone.

"Yeah Willie B! Yeah Willie B!" two-time All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge shouted a cross the locker room. "What did you eat today?"

Barton, who was a second-round pick by the Blazers out of Memphis, was brimming with confidence.

"Everyone on the team says I've got a special talent," he said. "You've just got to wait your turn sometimes."

Portland was without starting forward Nicolas Batum for the third straight game because of a sore right shoulder. Victor Claver started in his place.

Elton Brand missed his third straight game for the Mavericks with a sore right calf.

The Mavs went up 13-3 early and Kaman took over with 12 points in the opening six minutes alone. His short jumper late in the second quarter gave Dallas a 46-24 lead.

The Blazers were stung when guard Wesley Matthews was helped off the court with a right ankle injury with 8:27 left in the second quarter. The extent of the injury was not immediately known but Matthews was on crutches following the game.

The three-year NBA veteran was averaging 15 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists going into the game.

The Mavericks led 56-32 at the break. Dallas extended the lead to 79-53 late in the third quarter after Vince Carter's 3-pointer.

With an 81-61 Dallas lead going into the final quarter, Portland rested its starters except for Lillard, a five-time rookie of the month. The young group narrowed the Mavs' lead to 86-72 after Maynor's long jumper with 7:37 left.

Barton got alley-oops from Maynor for back-to-back dunks, making it 86-76. The Blazers re-inserted some of their starters, including Aldridge, for the final push but came up short.

As for his beard, Kaman said he's thinking about keeping it.

"I don't care it's a lot of work. I just let it go," he said. "It's like a Chia Pet."

Notes: Should they stumble, it would be the first time since 2000 that the Mavericks miss the playoffs. ... Mavs rookie Jared Cunningham, a local favorite because he played at Oregon State, was inactive for the game. ... The Blazers' 24-point deficit at halftime was their largest of the season. ... Dallas wrapped up a four-game road trip 2-2. The Mavs were coming off a 117-108 victory over Sacramento. ... Dallas won the season series against the Blazers 3-1.

THE FACTS: Dallas built a 26-point lead late in the third quarter Sunday night at the Rose Garden, and needed every bit of its cushion to close out a 96-91 victory over Portland.

Chris Kaman scored a season-high 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Mavericks (38-39), who never trailed but had to hold off a furious Portland rally to win.

The win wasn't secure until the closing seconds, when, with Dallas in front 94-91, the Trail Blazers' Damian Lillard failed to convert on a driving layup. The Mavericks rebounded and got the ball to a streaking Shawn Marion for a basket at the buzzer.

Rookie Will Barton -- playing because of a second-quarter injury to shooting guard Wesley Matthews -- came off the bench for season highs in points (22), rebounds (13) and assists (six) for the Trail Blazers (33-44), who lost their eighth straight game.

QUOTABLE: "It's been frustrating. Now we have a good opportunity to go on our home court and play a team that's below .500. Hopefully, we can knock them off and get these beards shaven."

THE STAT: Dallas overwhelmed Portland in nearly every statistical category in mounting a 56-32 lead at halftime, including field-goal percentage (53.3 to 37.1), rebounds (26-15), turnovers (4-10), points in the paint (30-12) and fast-break points (13-2).

TURNING POINT: The Mavericks extended a 24-point halftime advantage to 79-53 late in the third quarter and thought they had things wrapped up. Little did they know.

QUOTABLE II: "I'm just a confident, silly guy. I told Sasha (Pavlovic) and Jared (Jeffries) before the game, 'I'm going to have a career night tonight,' not knowing if I was even going to get in the game."

-- Barton, who carried averages of 2.9 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists into the game

HOT: Barton played the entire second half, totaling 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists after intermission.

NOT: O.J. Mayo, who had been lights out in three earlier games against Portland, scored seven points on 3-for-12 shooting for the Mavericks.

GOOD MOVE: Portland coach Terry Stotts turned Barton loose in the open court in the second half, and the 6-foot-5 guard from Memphis took advantage.

BAD MOVE: With 3-point shooters Matthews and Nicolas Batum injured and Lillard colder than an Arctic wind, Stotts allowed Lillard to drive to the basket with seven seconds left. Even had he made it, the Blazers would have trailed by a point. They should have tried a 3-point attempt, period.

QUOTABLE III: "Every win counts now. We have to keep winning and see what happens when we get to the finish line."

NOTABLE: Barton became the first rookie to collect as many as 22 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals in a game since Detroit's Grant Hill in March 1995. ... Lillard scored 15 points on 6-for-19 shooting. In four games against Dallas this season, the point guard out of Weber State has gone 17-for-60 (28.3) and averaged 14.3 points, well below his 18.9-point average.
